FW - Turisas
Hey all
Starting a couple of featherweight builds now as ive been without one for a while. Rendering the 'Pinsor' chassis bought off Calumco for 2 robots
This one will be for my 6wd bomb proof rammer, names Turisas after the Finnish god of war, and for those who are into metal, will be painted like the band
Here is a little on the spec:
- Drive: 12v drills with belt drive for other wheels
- Batteries: 18v Nimh
- Armour: 8mm T6 ali sides, 8mm hardox front and back, 4mm hardox lid and internal base with 3mm ali external base
Will keep it up to date with pics of the build but this will be built so its stong, compact and reliable but also look dam good (Very nice paint scheme and nice bright lights)
;)

Re: FW - Turisas
why are you adding a 3mm ali sheet to 4mm hardox base?
-
Re: FW - Turisas
Its a 3mm ali base that the 6wd set us is all on but adding some 4mm hardox inside to give it more strength and all my electrics will be fixed to that
-
Re: FW - Turisas
Not sure that your gonna need 6WD, I'd say dropping it 4WD would be much better. Does good for turning as well.
Yeah, believe it or not Matt, it's me. Apologies for dropping off the radar over the months, but I'm back on here regularly now.

Re: FW - Turisas
Was going to say, you been gone for ages!
Course you done need 6wd, but you want 6wd
-
Re: FW - Turisas
the armour sounds a bit crazy for that rammer lol
just have a 5mm or so ali base, and a 3.2-4mm fully welded together hardox lid, sides, front and back. it'd be a weak point where your front and back hardox meet the ali sides
-
Re: FW - Turisas
I could do the front and back in 8mm ali aswell and twin the lid with the wedges?
-
Re: FW - Turisas
Why bother?
Weld up a monocoque in Hardox or even mild steel.
-
Re: FW - Turisas
Wheels and belts ordered, still need a welder to get the armour done but I can finally get this thing driving
-
Re: FW - Turisas
stick welders are quite cheap i've used mine for my last two robots
-
Re: FW - Turisas
Ive used stick welders before and really dont get on with them
-
Re: FW - Turisas
fair enough, i tend not to get on with the cheap mig sets for some reason but the 1s i use to use at work were great and they were 250-300amp units
-
Re: FW - Turisas
Wheels are here, belts are here, time to get this at least driving
-
Re: FW - Turisas
Had a visit from calumco today, dropped off something very cool
Got a little suprise for this for the champs
-
Re: FW - Turisas
Today I went down to argos and bought a drill to cannibalise:
The current motors had a plastic stage in so removed them from both gearboxes and replaced with all metal gears so will make for a more reliable drive
Secured the other motor, got the wheels on, thread locked and in
Sorted the positioning for all the components as well
Ill be focusing on making it into a rammer first so its ready for whitwick but will then attempt to make a disk pod for it the champs which will probably go very badly and end up overweight, but worth a shot anyway as I can still run it as a rammer for the champs, just with more armour
YAY PROGRESS!

Re: FW - Turisas
Any pictures of Turisas? Doing some competitor snooping....
-
Re: FW - Turisas
@pj: Possibly, but would be irrelevant as it wont be like this for the champs
After whitwick, couple of little changes too the system need to be addressed
1 - When it survives an entire fight, everything is really hot, motors and batteries don't like it. Running the motors too hard with the 6 wheels so going to change out the argos 12v ones for some gimson 18v motors so will be running the motors at the rated voltage
2 - Since ill be halving the speed with no over volting, im chaging the ratios up to 24:1 so ill get the same speed
Hoping these 2 this will mean I keep the performance I have but wont be working the parts quite so hard then the other bits ill be doing externally but you will have to wait and see on those ;)
