so after 3 years i got the old girl back. I am waiting for a few more original parts to arrive such as weapon gearbox and frame.
taking the easy option, wrap it all up send it away for rebuilding, as fabrication for spinners were always past me. I want to keep it with the same look,but evolve it to move with the times, basically just better and more power, initial plan is to go brushless with lipo's.

its first outing will be robochallenge next event, this is the current full time project, will add more pics as it progresses.

all parts have now arrived, just ordered brushless motor and speed controller from hobbyking, then shipping everything to mario for sum fabrication work.

also ordered lipo's and charger, next update will be weapon test, already salvaged an old microwave from work to test it out on. :proud:

i cant get over the weight saving going brushless with lipos, lots and lots of extra armour me thinks!

Prodigy evo mk2 has now arrived with Mario. brushless motor, speedo, lipo's and charger sorted.
So far it has been a case of organising parts, the disk has been modifed to take a 20mm shaft with new bushes and bearings, replacing the original 15mm.
The shape will change it will b a lot shorter than it was, pics will follow as the rebuild progresses. It will be finished early December to coinside with its first competition before end of year.

New pulley and arches fitted in Hardox and steel.

Brushless motor Magnets are glued in with epoxy, the axle is turned around and supported on both sides.

Weight, with LiPo, drivetrain and brushless speedo, 8.3 kg.

Not with the current motor.

But with a simple batterydrill it went to 1000 rpm inside a second.

Oh well, I alway can make a new belt-disk, if I would make a 160mm one, the ratio goes up to 3-1. (end speed, theoreticialy 1640 rpm then, still a nice wallop)

It's not that the belts are a problem. I weld them myself to the right length. And buying it per spool is cheaper.

I was just asking what components they were to work out if it'd be any good- not how much they cost Ady.

And as i said i think the ratio is optimistic at 1.2:1, but hopefully it'll work out.

Mario - A battery drill has considerably more torque then that motor will have from stand still, theres no comparison.

im sure it will do for me, as long as i can have some fun with it. Never look to win anything :lol:
my pocket money went on my electric bike which set me back £1500, and i dont want to throw lots into a robot that i can only use once or twice a year.
i have an old microwave from work to test it out on when i get it back so will upload a vid.

yeah get some video's posted when you get chance ady, be cool.

It's the first time I work with a brushless.
I'll know tomorrow, as we set up the speedo.

If the amp meter and temperature gauge tell that it ain't a good thing, I easely can turn another belt-wheel. Up to 230mm (biggest diameter I have around).

The spin-up test went rather well; the biggest issue so far as I can tell is that even on soft start the motor spins up too fast making the belts slip so torque is not a real problem.

Temperatures are fine, everything stays pretty much cold to lukewarm. After a 2 minute spin no part of the system went beyond 55 degrees C, and that part that did get that warm was the center axle on top of the motor, not the motor itself (so there is a bit of friction there). The only downside I see to this configuration at the moment is that it takes a long time to spin down. Nothing a drive into the wall won't fix.

You should always video spin tests in case something goes horribly wrong! Then at least you'll get a cool video out of it.....

Or to show off how vicious your new machine/setup is! I really want Sam to upload the video of NST on its brushless setup... it sounds like a tornado screeching!

That's sounds pretty good then Leo! Having spoke to glen about those belts he did say the green ones were quite hard, but having a bit of slip is a good thing.

Be good to see a brushless spinner that works reliably on budget components.

What sort of current draw does it pull?

Starting to take shape
15mm sidewall, 10mm top and bottom armor, a tad over 2 kg, of the 4 we had left , HDPE welded and reinforced , with some shape outside cube.

any remaining weight will go on more armour, maybe removable? when fighting these pesky spinners!

The joints on the HDPE ain't milled right trough.
But bending 15mm HDPE accuratly is not easy, not even with industrial heatguns.
So, the hybrid solution. The joints are milled out 8mm deep, leaving 6mm thick HDPE solid. The rest will be welded and the ali supports replaced by Hardox angles.

Sounds nice and tough :)

If it's the robot I think it is, then

a) it's retired and hasn't competed at an event since 2009, and
b) its successor is built like a tank.

While a brushless weapon may make some dents in it or knock a cable loose or a panel off, there's not a hope in hell of it requiring a binbag. Can't remember the last time a spinner of any sort did such an amount of damage to a well-built robot that a bag was required or the robot was considered destroyed.

Also, while the details behind this desire of yours is none of my business, I personally believe that serious approaches of 'revenge' and 'payback' should absolutely not be brought to an event and/or into the arena.

This sport is all about having fun, socialising with people whose company we enjoy and getting anyone and everyone interested and excited about engineering. Using it as a platform to settle old unresolved issues is doing the sport a dis-service in my eyes and has the potential to create ill-feeling among people. Such things would be best left at the door and resolved (or otherwise) through another medium.

Dont know if thats me or not... dont really care im up for a good smushing but you kinda gotta abide by the gentlemans agreement at events Ady;

Ive damaged a few robots in my time, and yeah its cool, although doesnt make you popular. But if the other operator is standing next to you and shouting stop hitting it... you kinda gotta, or expect them to knock the tx out your hand. If there not arround and dont say anything its fair game IMO...

But if they say stop, and you keep hitting it... your being a bitch.
