Walker Robot/Interesting Robot Things...
As you'll have seen I've started ScotBots with Mr McHarg, looking for something I can use to draw a crowd to our cause. I've noticed that at RL events things like Pilgrim and the Daleks for example attract attention, and quite rightly so, and was wondering if anyone would have anything similar to that.
Ideally, it'd have to be able to go on grass or any other flat-ish surface as the events we're doing at the moment are predominantly outdoors and currently our robots, with the exception of Chimera, can't really run on grass or uneven ground and Chimera doing so is a bit on the dangerous side...
All ideas/suggestions considered.
Thanks,
Tony.

Re: Walker Robot/Interesting Robot Things...
a mechanical servo arm on a robot.
like 3 axis with cheap servos.
are people impressed by that?

Re: Walker Robot/Interesting Robot Things...
I think you can make a simple walker by attaching a leg to a crank then have the leg in a ring at the tip to stop it moving but so it can move up and down. I'm not sure if that makes sense? I don't think this type of mechanism counts for extra weight in a fight but it means you could make a simple walker robot

Re: Walker Robot/Interesting Robot Things...
My advice is forget the walker for a cheap easy way of making a €œcrowed puller€ I would get an old electric mobility scooter and make some manikin to fit over the top! You could actually fit inside it, saves on radio.
People are mainly attracted to €œdifferent or funny€ not usually to €œclever or well made.€Â

Re: Walker Robot/Interesting Robot Things...
Archie: I did see one of them on ebay the other day there, was pretty cheap too. Is that where you got the idea from? I cant seem to find a link to it anymore.
Max: Not 100% sure on what you mean, but would be interesting. Don't think I would have the time to do it before our event though as I have an almost full time job plus an arena to build.
Craig: I have a mobility scooter in the garage that I bought from ebay then cannibalised for bits to complete Eric and a few other projects. From that I know that they are incredibly heavy and bulky and my arena is being designed to be able to fit into the back of my car so might be a bit on the big side. I don't fancy dressing up as an old lady and driving around in a mobility scooter either

Re: Walker Robot/Interesting Robot Things...
My k9 no good on grass,
Edit: sorry I thought u wanted to borrow something, but I think your building your own thing

Re: Walker Robot/Interesting Robot Things...
Yeah, wheels will be too small and not enough clearance. Thats why Chimera would be good, but its probably too big/dangerous for use at galas. I imagine 750's on car wheels can go at quite a whack! A walker would just be something a bit different too, doesnt look like theres many about though.

Re: Walker Robot/Interesting Robot Things...
I think the only walkers are Spiderbot (ARAC2) and Pilgrim. I don't know of any others, plus they are quite big and would not fit in a car anyway.
I would go for A small 6 legged robot like this.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=heeH2kDtdWA
It doesn't steer and it dose not count as a proper walker but looks OK

Re: Walker Robot/Interesting Robot Things...
sort antazz i didn't see it on eBay it just the first thing that came to mind.
how about a paintball shooting RC car
i built this.

sorry for the bad video

Re: Walker Robot/Interesting Robot Things...
Archie: Can't see something that size working on grass. I'll also have something quite similar but a bit bigger that I can use.
Craig: Its a strange balance i'd be looking for, it'd need to be big enough to be seen but also ideally fit in a car. That video looks interesting, but doesn't really look advanced enough to do the job, and also probably too small.

Re: Walker Robot/Interesting Robot Things...
an RC bike servo power handlebars.
baby bike from a car boot sale.
i.don't know if would work.

Re: Walker Robot/Interesting Robot Things...
Get a children's electric car
RC it.
Dress it as Bessie.
Put a foot high Matt Smith doll in it.
Drive Bessie about.
Attention problem solved
Contemptible, ridiculous, absolutely pathetic. Worth a shot!

Re: Walker Robot/Interesting Robot Things...
I found a tiny little bicycle for kids the other day. I though, hmm, drill motor drive, big servos for steering, stick a small SLA in the seat, 15a Electronize, and voil¡! A robot to be put in and flipped about for a laugh. Could probably be put together with odds and ends from main combat machines.
:P

Re: Walker Robot/Interesting Robot Things...
that's what i had in mind.
might need stabilizers though.
i sold my old bike for £5 last month

Re: Walker Robot/Interesting Robot Things...
Jamie, Mario: Bit on the big side
Something Pilgrim/Spiderbot sized would be cool. I think an old bike with a batteries tied to it with servos and a motor is going to look really cheap and amateurish, not really what i'm going for. Could always look at building one myself I suppose, but time is going to be tight, and they looks pretty complicated!

Re: Walker Robot/Interesting Robot Things...
you could make something easy cheap and compact that will always attract attention and get the public to interact eg
a 2wd/4wd base eg wheel chair motors nice chunky tyres which works as any rammer does, then put a stool/chair on top which rotates randomly - (slowly) and then people sit on it and you drive them about = cheap advertising fun, might need to run it by insurance first :P and put a seatbelt on it lol

Re: Walker Robot/Interesting Robot Things...
I think I know the thing you mean.....i've seen a chair mounted on a wheelchair motor powered base before somewhere....
Ahhh yes, a regular wheelchair
I dont think a dude in a strange looking wheelchair would cut it, needs to highlight the engineering more. I think people would be more likely to remember/talk to their friends about a weird walking robot with our logo on it than a strange looking wheelchair spinning around displaying someone.
I've been watching that video of Pilgrim over and over trying to work out how it works, when you concentrate on each bit individually it looks doable. Reading over the build thread again, it looks like it could be done.
Craig, I guess as long as the 4 sections from the motor are the same length and the 4 sections at the knees are the same it should be ok? I realise there is a lot more to consider than that though of course...

Re: Walker Robot/Interesting Robot Things...
I would love to see many more walkers both fighting and show ones as they are fascinating to watch. and I am happy to help in anyway I can.
But they are a labour of love and take a lot of planning, time and money. the leg mechanism on Pilgrim amounts to around SIX HUNDRED parts! (with the new feet). Most of them custom made.
It's worth counting the cost before you start on such an adventure

Re: Walker Robot/Interesting Robot Things...
The walking mechanism on walkers, Pilgrim especially, I find hypnotic, really like them.
I'm going to be too pushed for time to get anything useful done before the event and also get all my robots and arena ready, so at the moment i'm considering alternatives that my volunteers can make for us instead as at the moment they haven't been involved a great deal.
I'm getting involved in a few other silly projects to see how they turn out and hopefully they can be useable at the event. Can't help myself really :proud:
Still open to any and all suggestions and advice :)

Re: Walker Robot/Interesting Robot Things...
rent something.
turn that octapus thing fat boy slim was on from the Olympics closing ceremony into a hovercraft.
that would be fun.

sorry for all these ideas.

What do you think CO2 does with a flame?

Why do we use fire extinguishers as main gas-storage bottles?
-
Re: Walker Robot/Interesting Robot Things...
Not to worry Mario, I was not going to attempt it anyway. Firstly, as is most obvious to most of it, it quite obviously wont work and secondly, its for kids, i'm not going to have flamethrowers. Think I'm just about sorted now anyway :)
