Hiya,
Building a feather for someone , thinking about buying some Gimson motors for it.
Any good? People had good experiences, who's using them?
Before I buy them.
Cheers

i use em, pretty good motors, fairly tough. its nice not having to make a seperate mount for motors.
Pound for pound I would say they are excellent.
I think they are good and have the edge over drill motors but if it is a first robot and you want to keep it cheap your better going with drill motors- in my opinion drill motors are better value for money.
its not my first robot .. LOL  But see your point!
i wish these newbees would read other topics both posting stupid threads pffffft :proud:
The Gimson units do use drill motors (if you class a mass produce 550 size motor as a drill motor).... Just have a custom gearbox housing and mounting options.
They're identical in power to drills, I believe. Never used them before, but I can see their mountability (that needs to be a word) makes them attractive. Don't want to lose Ewan money but would a drill mount really cost the £10+ of difference?
Then again actually, they get rid of the grubscrew process, they have all metal gears guaranteed, and you'll be helping a fellow roboteer out by buying them!
From purely a design standpoint the 'benefits' over shop-bought drills are intended to be:
-All-metal gears
-No need to modify/lock out the clutch on a drill
-Genuine shaft support from the dual 12mm ball-bearings
-A 550 type motor from a factory line usually responsible for ~$40 US-sold drills, more specifically the motors have larger fan blades and vents than most cheap drills. Can't really do specification comparisons though because cheap drill motors vary so much.
-Easy mounting in a solid profile which can itself lend to the structure of many designs
It's up to anyone to decide whether that's worth an extra tenner!
I meant if its the first robot for the guy your making it for!Quote:

However if it is a first robot and you are on a really tight budget the batteries could make the difference. Just remember they would only really be good for a few events then would need replacing so will likely cost more in the long run.
Gimsons are great because they give me time to make other stuff.
Stuff you can't buy off the shelf.
For me all the gimson products are excellent built for purpose at an affordable price. Also Ewan gives a quality customer experience, with lots of knowledge and practical help.
