4mm threaded aluminium round bar

hi all

looking for a piece of 4mm threaded aluminium round bar around 300mm+ needs to be ali due to weight.

i've had a search about can't seem to find anything suitable, anyone with some or contacts please reply :proud:

What are you going to use it for? I can't see any kind of threaded ali bar that small being useful in combat robots

It's for my product design course making an electro mechanical reading aid

I know it's not ideal but you could always just thread a bit of normal Ali rod with a die.

that is the other option but trying save a bit of time

Forget treading it with a die. Most ali that size is too soft and will gall.

At least bend in all directions at the same moment.

I could try to thread a titanium rod. But that will cost me a die, at least.

Is weight that much of an issue? I'm assuming you could find a steel threaded rod much easier.

yes weight is the issue ....i want to make it light portable etc....it's proably hard to imagine without a detailed explanation of my product which over the interent is quite hard

How long do you need it?

You could look into M4 Ali Bolts.

Steel threaded rod M4 300mm long. 21 grams, pricetag, per meter a few £ in any serious DIY shops.

Aluminium threaded rod M4 300mm long 7 grams.

Titanium threaded rod M4 300mm long 12 grams.


How much is that 14 or 9 grams worth?

hmmm i see your point from my measurements its around a 20g difference

and when your building somethin in grams a difference of 20g is quite big as roboteers i think we all understand :talker:

What is that weight worth?

enough to make extra hassle and work worth it

If weight is so important and strength isn't couldn't you go for a steel m3 or even m2 rod as may still be stronger but similar weight to Ali rod?

Well doing a quick search, ebay threw up some M6 ali threaded rod and if weight is a real issue but strength isn't as bad then you could go for plastic
