2012 FRA UK Featherweight Championships by RoboChallenge
The 2012 FRA UK Featherweight Championships Hosted by RoboChallenge!
Robo Challenge will be returning as one of the main features at this years Gadget Show Live! This years event promises to be bigger and better than ever before and with over 110,000 people visiting, it will be a spectacular opportunity to showcase robot combat.
Event type - This is a full combat championship held as part of the Robo Challenge feature at the Gadget Show Live .
Venue - The NEC in Birmingham.
Dates - The championships will be run from Friday 13th to Sunday 15th.
Robot entries - The championships are open to 40 robots.
Entry Fee - There is an entry fee of £20 per team. Your entry fee includes entry for up to 3 robots in the championships and passes to the Gadget Show Live for up to 4 team members.
Event Format - We will be running a similar format to last years Robo Challenge Championships whereby half of the competitors will qualify on Friday and half will qualify on Saturday. Every robot will be given 3 battles and awarded points for a win by knock out, a win, 2nd place and for entering the arena. On Sunday the top 10 teams with the most points will proceed through to the knockout stages where there will be multiple losers melees to get yourself back into the competition. This year your passes are valid for the entire duration of the Gadget Show live so although we need to keep only competing roboteers in the pits you are more than welcome to attend the event to watch the battles or visit the exhibition when you are not competing. As this is a large public exhibition the pits area will be located on our stand. Standard lightweight maintenance may be carried out here. If you need to do more heavy duty repairs we will be providing our €˜Repairs Zone€™ where angle grinding, hammering and soldering may be done in a safe environment whilst letting the public get a behind the scenes look at all your hard work. Roboteer information packs will be emailed out before the event. This contains all the important information so please take time to read it all.
Extra opportunities & non competition battles - Robo Challenge will be hosting a 2 day event a week before the championships. This is the perfect opportunity to have fun with your robot and give it a good shake down in preparation for the 2012 Championships. Details of this can be found here. There may also be a possibility for teams to do some testing during the week as part of the Robo Challenge €˜Tested to Destruction€™ live shows. If you are interested in demonstrating your robot before the championships start please tick yes in the sign up form. Please bear in mind these places are very limited, we will let you know before the event which robots will be demonstrating on which days.
To enter this event please submit your £20 entry fee and on completion you will be redirected to fill in your teams details. Please remember we will be operating a 1 robot per driver rule through out the competition. This event is run in accordance to the FRA build rules and event guidelines. To gain access to the event all roboteers MUST have an entry pass. Once your entry fee is paid please fill out the entry pass details for your team/vehicle as we will need these to create your passes. These will be distributed to you on arrival at the NEC.
Good luck and we look forward to what promises to be the best UK Championships ever! Can LF3 defend their title or will the spinners finally reign supreme?

Re: 2012 FRA UK Featherweight Championships by RoboChallenge
All draws are random. Have you been drawn against them for 5 years running? Is that lucky or unlucky?
-
Re: 2012 FRA UK Featherweight Championships by RoboChallenge
Not sure if I can get the dates off but when I know I will be signing up Chuck.

Re: 2012 FRA UK Featherweight Championships by RoboChallenge
Do we have to buy tickets for the Gadget show live event itself or not if we are competing? Sensablilty says yes we do but you never know...

Re: 2012 FRA UK Featherweight Championships by RoboChallenge
ive paid the £20 entry fee, but cant figure out how to sign up my bots

Re: 2012 FRA UK Featherweight Championships by RoboChallenge
Think I'll wait a few days till payday. Having to pay for a root canal today has made me rather skint atm! Grant/James, I am planning on attending but if I'm not able to due to my offshore rota, I take it I will be good for a refund?

Re: 2012 FRA UK Featherweight Championships by RoboChallenge
When will the draw for the first rounds occur? Only asking for the hotel arrangements

Re: 2012 FRA UK Featherweight Championships by RoboChallenge
Will be signing up soon! Can I ask for some more info on the event a week prior to the champs? Is there an entry fee or do we just turn up? And a week prior could be the 6th, 7th or 8th... is there an exact date?
Thanks. :)

I think James posted somewhere that Yeovil will be on the 4th and 5th, might be wrong though

Re: 2012 FRA UK Featherweight Championships by RoboChallenge
Woop woop!
Will sort out our entries tonight and organise accommodation when it's payday. We'll probably be staying at the same place as last year. It was decent enough and quite nearby.
This has coincided nicely with my busy weekend of robot stuff, motivation levels should be good 8)

Re: 2012 FRA UK Featherweight Championships by RoboChallenge
Afraid that at the moment I won't be going, we have a wedding booked for that weekend on the saturday night so there is no real way around that. Don't really have any full combat worthy robots anyway.

Re: 2012 FRA UK Featherweight Championships by RoboChallenge
Hi guys,
Thank you all for your support so far, Almost half full already!
Sorry I should have made it more clear, once you go through the payment click go back to Robo Challenge and you will be redirected to the sign up form to fill in your details. If anyone has a problem just let me know and I shall email you the form :)
If you can't make saturday qualifying you could qualify on Friday and the knock out stage will be Sunday if you get though?
Any other questions just fire them this way. :)

Re: 2012 FRA UK Featherweight Championships by RoboChallenge
Drumroll II and Carcinus signed up :)
Also got Spin Cycle and Firefly registered for whiteboards. Spin Cycle is going to be an MDF version of the tutorial robot design I had in mind (Speed 900 drum) and Firefly will be a low-pressure flipper. Not sure if it'll be fully operational, but as it's my first foray into pneumatics, I plan to just get some advice/help regarding filling up bottles and hopefully a few tests of the system.

Re: 2012 FRA UK Featherweight Championships by RoboChallenge
Cheers for trying to work out possibilities for us James, but I would have to be down in Birmingham on the thursday/friday, then go back to Glasgow that night to pack all my gear up and head up to the Highlands for this wedding then come back home again that night, unload the gear and drive back down to Birmingham. I would be doing about 2000miles in 3 days
It might well be changed/cancelled as it has been put in the system in a weird way, meaning it might be a provisional booking (but then again, the ceilidh guys put it in, so it could just be that they can't work it properly) so if it isn't a go-er for any reason I will sign up our 3 bots. Shame too, really enjoyed it last year. I'll try to send my cousin to get those girls to chat to you all again
-
Re: 2012 FRA UK Featherweight Championships by RoboChallenge
I take it you can't just stick an iPod on shuffle then? Or get someone to cover you? :P
If you can't make it, and Gary ends up being off-shore, it would leave me representing us Scots. Not a good thing based on Drumroll's performance last year
-
Re: 2012 FRA UK Featherweight Championships by RoboChallenge
Jamie I'm going to wet myself laughing if the MDF bot turns out to be a better bot than drumroll

Re: 2012 FRA UK Featherweight Championships by RoboChallenge
We can run the event from playlists yeah, but it'll sound really bad and there has to be someone there to set the gear up. Only Colin and I can really do that so it would be quite bad asking him to not compete with his bot and go do my work for me so that I can compete instead  . At least if Drumroll runs properly it has a chance of winning, me not going isn't exactly decreasing our chances of doing well :lame:
I'll try to confirm that event and what is happening over the next few days/weeks and if its off then maybe sign up if there's still spaces.

Re: 2012 FRA UK Featherweight Championships by RoboChallenge

Do you need to be a FRA member to enter?
-
Re: 2012 FRA UK Featherweight Championships by RoboChallenge
You can sign up on the day but its much easier if you do so before hand.
-
Re: 2012 FRA UK Featherweight Championships by RoboChallenge
540s hopefully signed up :)

Re: 2012 FRA UK Featherweight Championships by RoboChallenge
Despite having read about it, if I register two robots, each one will fight 3 fights (in all six fights) or will I have to choose between them to fight only three fights? What is the average interval between fights?
Regarding the hotel, should be in the crowne plaza, but it does not have rooms. Any suggestions on hotels?
Thanks
Guilherme Ferreira

Re: 2012 FRA UK Featherweight Championships by RoboChallenge
I'll get my FRA membership sorted in the next week or so
Each robot is it's own entry in the championship so each will have 3 fights in all. Generally there is a couple of hours between fights but it can be as short as 20min if there are losers melees etc to fight. Each bot needs it's own driver for the champs as well.

Re: 2012 FRA UK Featherweight Championships by RoboChallenge
Travel lodge at fort dunlops not to far away, probably a 10min drive/taxi ride.
