Wanted: 4 x drill motors
Hey guys.
Some of you may be aware I am rebuilding Kaizer for Ceri and unfortunately all of his drill motors have had it, certainly the gearboxes (I blame Battleaxe), So I'm looking for 4 identical drill motors for cheaper than to buy 4 Argos ones.
Can anyone help?

Re: Wanted: 4 x drill motors
I'm going to put it simple.
March 30th . Ok?
-
Re: Wanted: 4 x drill motors
Gimson's are very cost affective
-
Re: Wanted: 4 x drill motors
I have built the robot to fit drill motors and Ceri can't really afford any new bits, so I'm scrounging.
-
Re: Wanted: 4 x drill motors
i'll only look at gimsons once they've been battle tested. Before that, they might aswell be hobby motors
-
Re: Wanted: 4 x drill motors
i'm running a pair of gimpsons on 170mm exposed wheels on sunday, should be a good test of the motors abilities
-
Re: Wanted: 4 x drill motors
Unless spinners are in the arena it's not a good test
-
Re: Wanted: 4 x drill motors
Sent PJ a message Dave, he had a load of them last time I spoke to him.
-
Re: Wanted: 4 x drill motors
Any battle-based test is a good test I'd say. I've had more broken drill motors/gearboxes from being flipped and rammed all over the place in robot meles at non-spinner events than I've had from spinner fights.

I have a few of the 9.6v? argos ones. Some are shot for a variety of reasons but as we wont be using them again you could get a few together with a bit of effort. I have at least one good one.

Re: Wanted: 4 x drill motors
I'll see what else I can get, because I have the robot on 24v batteries, just running on dual rates, so 12v would be preferable :)

how does that make sense? a battle test with normal robots is a good test, if a spinner hits any motor its gonna damage it

Re: Wanted: 4 x drill motors
Lots of people have recently swapped out to Gimson motors, maybe they'll be willing to part with their past drill motors.
-
Re: Wanted: 4 x drill motors
I'm only ever in competition with spinners. If it survives inside a bot with a spinner then I'd be happy to run them. I didn't mean a direct hit from a spinner. I'm dubious about the mountings for the moment but am always willing to be surprised.

Re: Wanted: 4 x drill motors
Is it the inserts you're concerned about? If so I'd be happy to send you a sample front piece with them in- stick a bolt in one of the holes and try to pull it out, maybe give it a bit of a hammer (PM me an address to send to if you like?). I believe you'll find the point of failure to be far beyond what you'd expect from the majority of mounts/motor assemblies, even if the material combination is a little unorthodox.
-
Re: Wanted: 4 x drill motors
No need Ewan although I appriciate the offer. I'll be interested to see how they fair in the arena.
-
Re: Wanted: 4 x drill motors
I'm only concerned about the inserts being overtorqued and ripping the thread out of the plastic, not by direct pulling force.
-
Re: Wanted: 4 x drill motors
Hi Dave,
Decided that as i'm gonna only make 1 event this year (it looks like anyway) i'm gonna spend the hotel/food/petrol money upgrading Eric Jr For Edinburgh so will be putting Gimsons in it so I'll have 2 motors going if you're still looking?

Re: Wanted: 4 x drill motors
Right, no problem.
They don't have any reverse thread screws, but presumably you still have the old gearboxes/motors that you can take parts from? Any chance I could send you Eric Jr's paintball tank with them and if you could fill it up at an event and send it back to me we'll call it even? Not sure if thats possible or not.

Re: Wanted: 4 x drill motors
I can do that, but I need to make sure its OK for me to send a gassed bottle in the post :P
-
Re: Wanted: 4 x drill motors
When do you need it for Tony? If there's no rush, I could pick it up and get it filled at the champs and drop it back off. The only event before the champs is this weekend at Whitwick, which would be a rush to get the bottle posted to David.

Re: Wanted: 4 x drill motors
royal mail get a bit iffy with sending compressed gas in the post. i've sent full bottles with TNT before no problem though :)
-
Re: Wanted: 4 x drill motors
I need it to test with you the week before the champs Jamie, after which I had intended to see if you fancied filling it up for me again at the champs  :proud: Also maybe for some demos at the school beforehand and for setting the regulator as its too low atm I think.
If you can find out over the next few days Dave i'll get the drills out of the robot and send them down to you if thats all ok :) .

Re: Wanted: 4 x drill motors
Don't have my garage free atm so can't get those wheels/mount off of the motors, not sure if you want me to send them like that or wait until I am able to use the workshop again? Put a few pics in my build diary, the wheels are pretty rubbish (75mm that are not 66mm with tyre wear) but wouldn't mind holding on to the mounting brackets that are still on there. Not too bothered when I got the tank/bracket back though, as long as its before the 8/9th April weekend if you're able :)
-
Re: Wanted: 4 x drill motors
I can wait until you can use the workshop again, I don't need the mounts because I have some. I will get the bottle back ASAP, either by courier or royal mail.
-
Re: Wanted: 4 x drill motors
I know you don't, I was meaning I do need them :) Not sure when that will be, but if its not gonna be soon i'll try to get those wheels off somehow, could even just saw through them if needed and get them sent to you.
EDIT: Oh, and can you PM me an address?

Re: Wanted: 4 x drill motors
Dave, how are the shafts from the drill motors you're taking out? Just had a thought that I could get the motors to you more quickly if I just cut the shafts to get the wheels off and send you them to put new shafts in? I'll give it another go getting them off tomorrow, i've already chopped the tyre section of the wheel off to get a better grip but still struggling to do so, going to chop through the hub to get to the nut tomorrow and see if it comes off from there, but if its still locked solid cutting them might be the only option :(

Re: Wanted: 4 x drill motors
May be a dumb question but have you tried running the motor from a battery and holding the wheel to get it off?
-
Re: Wanted: 4 x drill motors
Yeah, nearly broke my wrist
-
Re: Wanted: 4 x drill motors
If people are interested in some testing of the gimson motors today I bolted my 4 motors to my chassis and gave it its first proper strength test.
Before this I have an issue with the bearings popping out at random and they had never been so much as dropped but a piece of HDPE over those has sorted that.
The stress testing basically involved me and an exuberant first year throwing the robot around our uni workshop. Given the design it pretty much always landed on its wheels at some point and I have had no issues what so ever.
I even have some videos I took so I will get them up, though her throws were not as big as mine; she did not want to break it :-P

Re: Wanted: 4 x drill motors
Haha, there should be a competition, who can thow their robot the furthest, with out it breaking...

Re: Wanted: 4 x drill motors
The problem with drill motors is that they aren't strong and people mount them in a way that makes them break. If you try and hold both the motor and the gearbox. Any bending in your chassis is going straight into those 3 tiny screws in the plastic. Time and time again I see people at events with broken gearboxes because ive seen them mounted in this way. We mount ours with steel mounts that only hold the gearbox end. this means the robot can be bent and hit to buggery and it wont strain the motor. As the mounts are made from steel you cant flex them to rip the end of the gearbox out. In Captain Scarlett we use our mounts and each year the wheels get whacked by spinners and half the time ripped off. Not once have we ever had a gearbox failure. It is all due to the motor mounts. Get the right mounts and your motors wont get wrecked.

Re: Wanted: 4 x drill motors
Looking good Alex, will you be taking it to the Yeovil event by any chance?
And all true James, Alex isn't using/mounting drills as you describe however
-
Re: Wanted: 4 x drill motors
If I wasn't on a budget of 0 I would have got the steel drill faceplates in a heartbeat :).
-
Re: Wanted: 4 x drill motors
I am using Ewan's GR01 motors :-) They are superb so far despite a minor bearing issue. The are held in top and bottom with 4 M5 bolts then held in with another face plate which as added to solve the bearing issue so its 8 bolts and 2 screws holding each one down! The only thing I wish is that I had made the robot slightly taller as the area inside the robot is only as tall as the motors themselves, ie 45mm! wiring is really difficult and one of my Lipos is going to struggle to fit!
And most likely no to Yeovil due to uni and lack of transport, unless there is a good bus!
