As always many thanks to The Robo Challenge crew for all there efforts in making the featherweight Champs happen, great event well done guys.
Congratulations to all the winners especially Alex for getting the Annihilator prize, the final was a close fought battle that went to the judges gripping stuff.
Great to see everyone again see you at the next one. :D
Great event, a lot of fun :)
Glad that i made the top 10 again with boner and for the first time ever have a working battery pack when i came home. Just a shame i blew the castle creations brushless speedo
Big thanks to all the robochallenge guys for the event and to dave and sam for letting me crash at theirs and congrats to the winners :)
1. It was made very clear at the beginning of the annihilator that going in the pit was instant knockout.Quote:

Official Results now online here.
Thanks to everyone at Robochallenge for an excellent UK Championships!!
Well done for Mark and Little Flipper for a well deserved win, Michael and Explosion for coming second and also Alex and Tiny Toon for winning the annihilator.
Inertia did far better than expected for its first outing coming 3rd overall, it caused more damage than it recieved and the playoff with Little Spinner 4 was one of the most fun (and scariest  ) fights i've had in a long time
Heatwave also did well making the top 10 but had an unlucky draw against LS4 and it became clear my welding was not as good as i hoped
As for Whirlpool (aka Ringpiece) i think the less said about that the better.
Thanks again to everyone for a great event and well done to all the winners!
I'd like to say thanks to everyone that helped organise this event and all of the other teams that helped us get Bitza running and into the top 15!
Dan and myself had an awesome weekend, and the fight against LS4 was a major highlight! As was Explosion flipping us a full 5 rotations before leaving the arena in the Play-Offs.
We've got a few vids which I'll post links to soon.
I have started to upload some videos to youtube which can be found here http://www.youtube.co.uk/willteamocean
Here's one to get started which I like :)

Kane;
watch the video- Tiny toon hit the floor dead before NST went in the pit.
The judge told me his deffinition of in the pit before the first round... if one wheel is out of the pit- your not in the pit...if both wheels are in the pit, you are classed as in the pit
NST only had one wheel in the pit...
Any other videos from the event?
Finally home, great event thanks to the Robo Challenge crew. Special thanks to Dave for driving me from and to the event and Grant for fixing my robot in record time...
See you next time
If NST is classed as being in the pit while one wheel is over the pit then surely Seraph should be classed as in the pit every time it drives over the pit. The rules do need to be looked at when it comes to the pit. Even in normal fights, If a flipper robot was put into the pit by a pusher but then flipped itself back out that would be judged against it, But if you have a robot like seraph you can drive through the pit all day long and it doesnt seem to matter. I like seraph its a good design, Its hard to flip, you cant put it in the pit and its fun to watch because its so different but it should be judged in the same way as all the other robots.
So bacause NST wasnt actually in the pit, And it all happened so fast that it is hard to clearly tell what robot was immobile first without watching it back on a recording. So if anything it should have been a double count out, or restarted. And im sure Alex would have been well up for a restart. Alex would have probably won the anihilator even if it was restarted, Its a good solid machine and hes a very good driver and hes proven he can beat spinners time and time again. So the overall outcome might have been the same at the end of the day, but as you know a majority of the people didnt agree with that call.

Really enjoyed ourselves, and we are thrilled at getting second place with Explosion :)
Congratulations to the Big Nipper team for winning the event, well deserved, but I'm glad that Little Flippergot to the final instead of Little Spinner
Finally, well done to Will with Inertia, excellent outcome for a first event with your robot, and well done to Alex, for winning the annihilator once again.
Hi Tom
Glad you like Seraph. and like you said
So if anything it should have been a double count out,
In an annihilator if only one robot was working dose that not mean Seraph won!! :uhoh:
You may agree or not agree but the fact remains Judges decision is FINAL. Please let that be the end of it!!
Alex won and that is that. WELL DONE ALEX
From all of us at Team Saint :D
Well done LF3 and Tiny Toon :)
I agree they need to be looked at, in one of beauty 2s qualifying rounds it went to a judge€™s decision and we lost and the reason was because we had been put down the pit, even though we got out of it within 30 seconds but was probably just a reason to give the other bot the win. The rules should be simple, if you go down the pit then you are out - forget this 30 seconds business, the pit is there to knock people out. If a robot flipped themselves back into the arena what would happen then? Probably still be out - is there anything in the rules to state what happens if this occurs?Quote:

Just one thing which I think we all need and that is higher arena walls, about double the height as they are at the moment and it should make the fights more interesting as there is too many flipper fights ending in 5 seconds, so with the walls a bit higher will make it more fun :)
Agree with the higher walls! The amount of times we bounced over the edge! And when a flipper starts calling for higher walls.....
Some nice videos there :)
It may take me a little while to get my videos uploaded. I'm afraid I wasn't as dedicated with my camera this time so footage may not be the best quality (i.e. might not always be pointing at the action!) but there are a good few fights in there nonetheless.
Congratulations to Mark and the Big Nipper team for taking the top spot with Little Flipper 3; you have some of the toughest and most reliable machines around and have been consistently excellent for years so it's only fair that you finally have the title of No.1 :)
Well done also to Michael with Explosion for coming a close 2nd and to Will for, quite frankly, a brilliant 3rd place finish for a first-time machine. Congrats to Alex too for reclaiming the Annihilator championship.
As usual, a great deal of thanks has to be expressed to the Coopers and Co for once again running a fantastic event. The integration into the exhibition ensured that there was always a large audience watching the fights which is always nice, and the Repair Zone was a handy addition that was well used throughout the weekend!
I don't know if it's just me, but the Gadget Show Live itself definitely seems a lot more impressive when they're promoting it on the programme; after one wander round it I didn't have any inclination to go and see anything again (girls clad in tartan short shorts aside  ) but maybe I'm just not gadgety-minded enough.
Drumroll was total and utter pish, but I'll save that for my build thread
On the topic of judges' decisions, the Boner v Beauty 4 and Annihilator semi-final fights were the only two that stuck out as being controversial in my opinion. I don't want to open up a can of worms (as they probably wouldn't taste very nice) but Boner lost his fight despite being the superior machine because he was reduced to one wheel for roughly half of the fight, yet another robot earlier in the event (can't remember who) took two points in the qualifiers despite running on one wheel for the majority of the battle and one of its opponents only got one point after it drove into the pit near the end despite being fully functional up until that point.
I probably ought to read the judging rules again but I thought that if a robot can't demonstrate controlled translation across the arena within 30 seconds - in other words, move forward or backwards, left or right using both drive wheels - then it gets counted out. If that's the case the Boner v Beauty 4 decision was correct, but going by the earlier precedent set in the aforementioned qualifier, it should have gone to Boner.
With the Annihilator fight, there are two strong arguments for the two different possible outcomes and it's already been covered in this thread, so all I'll say is that a restart would have been the fairest thing to do.
But hey, it's all done with now, so let's let the winners enjoy it :)
And I hope the Robo Challenge guys will get a chance to recover now!
Has anyone got the video of the boner vs beauty 4 fight? I personally think it was the right decision as jonno definitely had control over the fight, always going for boner but took the most damage but was still running perfect.
Would be interesting to see a video of this fight?
It was Bitza Jamie that was running on one wheel and got 2 points. Just to add to the can of worms we dropped Bitza in the arena with only one wheel working, so it's wasn't due to our competitors that it stopped, the robot was crap from the start!
Also just to add to those points about the pit and walls:
To avoid similar issues in the Annihilator in the future, how about making that competition a pit-free environment? It's all about the last robot standing/the first robot to be defeated by its opponents, and having one round being over in ten seconds because the pit got opened and a robot randomly ricocheted into it is pretty lame. Ruling out use of the pit will make that event much more hardcore and more what the Annihilator should be about. It would also mean you wouldn't have the issue with the judging and what technically counts as being in the pit/not in the pit.
And yeah, higher arena walls would be better :)
It's currently a help for flippers and a hindrance for spinners in terms of remaining in the active fighting zone; higher walls would perhaps give more of a 50-50 split in terms of advantage. Admittedly, some flippers and spinners are so powerful that higher walls wouldn't make much of a difference but it might lead to matches being a bit more interesting than one-flip or one-hit wonders.
P.S. John, I've got that fight on video. May take me a wee while to get them up, but I'll post a link once it is.
Ahh, thought it might have been PJ, but wasn't too sure!
Nothing against your robot or your efforts in the arena by the way :)
Just confused by the controlled translation situation and your battle was an ideal example.
I seem to remember another robot who entered the arena with only one wheel working and still getting 2 points, don't you Jamie?
been asking for higher walls for years when i was running hornet
I actually completely forgot about that! Another prime example then, I should've been counted out after 30 seconds as I was unable to move across the arena floor in a controlled manner. Must've been my uber-spinning that bumped up the style section of my judging card to get the points 8)Quote:

Haha, that was awesome! I havn't the foggiest how you managed that....
LS4 had the coolest arena exit against Inertia XL.
Higher Walls sounds like a good idea to me as it might stop Bonx putting Tiny Toon out of the arena
A big thanks to the Robo Challenge guys for another great event.Congratulations to Mark,Michael and Will on your hard won trophies and to Zac on putting up a good fight in the annihilator final.
On the subject of the annihilator semi final I could not honestly say at what point the link came out of Tiny Toon but have to say that Sam was absolutely superb in the way that he took the decision and look forward to our 1v1fight at the next event ( with NST not Tiberious Sam :uhoh: )
Finally well done to Wendy on a great showing with Stagefright :proud:
A big thanks to all the Robo-challenge crew for putting on another superb event. I think everyone would agree that it had the true champs atmosphere with the competitive bar raised and big audiences.
Congrats to the winners and finalists. It is certainly time one of the machines from the big nipper team took the UK champs trophy with each of their machines being top class in their weapon type.
Thanks to everyone who helped me out with NST, lending parts and tools and helping to rebuild it! it was certainy worth the effort, the machine once again suprised me with its robustness.
Once again I have a list of improvements for NST or maybe a new machine.
Having been a judge I know that there is little guidance on rule details. Perhaps The FRA could compile a 'guidance' set of rules, derived from key topics discussed on this furum to find balanced and well thought out details to some of the judging criteria.
This set of rules could then be available to event organisers and judges to use at the event organisers' discretion.
I wish i'd taken more footage of the battles will upload what i have soon. Has anyone got the big melee with NST in from the Saturday?
Look forward to seeing the vids as the're posted
Cheers Clive yep we'll defo have to get a grudge match on the board next time, Or even this weekend if you change your mind and want to put it up against Tiberius
I like the low arena walls, and the 30 second pit rule, Explosion has no trouble getting out in that time :D
We watched that fight back in slow motion, and it actually leapfrogged about two feet into the air, not a clue how it happened...Quote:

well if we are having higher walls let me know now as beauty 3.5 1/2 is a bit of a scrapper still can beat little spinner 4 tho LOL
well Beauty2 was ok again untill the link came out yet again sorry LJ it will be sorted!!
and Beauty5 is all ready in the making :~)
RIP beauty4
I also particularly enjoy being thrown from the arena. It's fantastic fun, very audience friendly & I have no rebuilding to do.Quote:

Besides couldn't you just use higher walls on the Sunday? If the annihilator is for people who should have gotten to the semi finals - let them fight in a higher ability arena & leave the newbie qualifiers flip out who they like. If your 3 round 1 matches get knackered by a pit or a low arena wall , you have bigger problems than the arena design.
On the subject of leaving the arena Zach says you orrible sods just laughed and applauded him when he fell out of the arena. Obviously he's not in favour of higher arena walls :rofl:Quote:

I think that was earlier in the week when Zach fell out the arena! I missed it but did hear the it
Huge congratulations to Mark Lumb for taking home the win this weekend - It's been well deserved and I'm suprised the win hasn't come in sooner years!
The spinners made a big impression this year - LS4 never fails to impress, and NST/Inertia XL put on some awesome displays aswell.
My favourite fight has to be Basher/Buzzbar though :proud: Great fun to watch.
I hope you all enjoyed the event and had a great time - We at Robo Challenge were pretty well worn out by the time the event got started (and so was Andy Kane from his sleeping position between the judges table and the arena LOL) but we thoroughly enjoyed it.
The Repair zone seemed to be a popular feature - especially when something caught fire and had tp set off the fire extinguishers in there :) We have had some great feedback on it.
On the dodgy Judging note for the NST/Tiny Toon fight - Andy Kane did specifically say at the beginning of the annihilator that the 30s pit rule does not apply in the Annihilator and with seraphim, if he had 2 wheels he was in the pit, 1 wheel was out. It was made clear that this rule was for seraphim only. As it happens - I have just checked over the footage and BOTH of NST's wheels were actually over the pit and therefore the judges decision was correct.
