Had a harsh draw for the UK championships which sees Predator against 2 nasty spinners. I do have around 2 kg to play with but i may just leave it if the machine does well in testing. I need to beef the front of the chassis up but other than that it may just get some lead in the base to lower the cofg. Yesterday i made an end stop buffer for the head to stop it going to far back and hitting itself. Just need to make a little pic up so we can add limit switches to the head and arms.
Here comes the champs!
magnets?
Not keen on magnets as I havent seen them work well that often. I may try some for testing and see how it goes. Im also rapidly running out of space lol.
Surprised to find mounting the weapon speedo and links is the biggest challenge of this build!
Unimportant bits then.... ;)
The links are a real problem... where on earth do you put them on Predator with out being too close to the disc or the arms
For the last 2 years we've done the links the night before :s It's a serious consideration that people always overlook.
james I would worry more about keeping it from the disc. I'm sure the arms could hurt if you caught your fingers in there but generally i like to have my link in a location that when I'm working out channels on the tx and it inevitably goes to full throttle without my input i can easily get the link out.
Top of the tail just below the motor, away from the disk and between the arms,
put it in a little trolly that it pulls along behind it.

Thats the problem. The issue with the arms is just being aware the cover all the middle body if the arms are up you cant get to the top and if the are down you cant get at the sides unless its by the disc. Dont want to cut the tail. May modify the central ali motor cover to hide them under there.
other concern is not lengthening the wire from the weapon speedo to the battery. I dont understand why but ive been told it blows he speedos when the disc is free wheeling turning the motor as a generator. Why would wire length affect this?
Just lengthen the Pos wire from the battery enough so that it can protrude from the robot and then before a fight twist the ends together. That'll do right?
Also emailed you.
Its like black magic to me lol
So been working on making the battery clamp. here is the design and the piece cut our from 0.6mm ti
And here is is all folded, nicely clamps both battery sets in position but has a bit of flex to absorb shocks. Also protects the side of the main battery as the head motor retracts back down the side of it and only misses by 3mm which is too close considering the mounts flex.
Spent ages trying to find a place to put the head speedo without extending the battery wires or putting shock through it. Find 1 place where it just fits in the base of the machine between the battery and arm mech.
Ti bracket made for the speed which bots onto the polycarb battery mount so it all flexes to absorb the shocks. only just fits! need to lengthen and route the motor wires to the front of the machine. Im using a 100a hobbyking speedo which i hope will survive, should be well over spec'ed.
Next job is organising the links. I was planning to use EC5's but they are just too big to fit in so may go with deans.
looks good james- looks like a red brick esc- i just put a 200a version in 360 and it seems to work a treat... make sure you remove the brake function before doing a spin up...

ah thats brilliant thanks mouldy!
Predator is looking really good there James.
Your posts about fitting the last components in reminded me of how much trouble it was getting the hydraulics to fit inside Tiberius, took days of arranging the hoses and parts to find a combination that fitted. Feels slow going but worth it in the end.
Just a thought, is it worth making the battery holder from carbon fibre if you want less flex in it to keep it away from the disc?
We ll just got back from Fleet Air Arm & The UK Champs
Predator got knocked out of the first round of the champs which was a shame, it really knocked itself out. Im still really pleased with the performance of the machine. First battle was going well giving a few hits and was very nice to drive but then hit the floor and flipped over. Unfortunately the machine cant self right with the arms down. The second battle was also going well. A hit on 4 4 Toon knocked them out and Rabid wasnt working so 4 points were in the bag. The Judges didnt feel Rabid was immobile so gave Rabid a big hit which tore the side off and mangled the gearbox but it sent predator upside down again and unable to self right. With Fleet the next week I decided to pull Predator from the final battle with Inertia as there was only something to loose and unable to get through.
Off to Fleet and Predator performed well in demonstration except for when it hit the wall at almost full speed shot out of the arena but the arm caught the wall bar and almost ripped it off! Got the robot working again for a battle with Awol at the end. Good battle and caused a lot of damage to the steel armour. Managed to put the plug out of the head motor so that stopped but all in all went very well.
The head seems to get seriously good engagement. After Predator hit the wall it took the deepest gouge out of the 6mm steel than any robot has ever done including NST and 360. The week parts are the neck and arm pivots. Need a new neck making as its now all twisted but other than that the machine is good to go. To make it more stable im going to make the head to it can come back further to make it more horizontal.
Overall really pleased Predator is competitive and hopefully will be entering it in next years champs.

Once you have ironed out initial issues I think this would do well in next champs, looking nice james

Devonian Sea Scorpion. Armoured, with stiff but movable flippers/arms and a flexible precursor to a fish's tail.
Ellis has put together a really nice video from fleet of Predator in action. Making me think I should get it fixed and going again...
