Y'all are welcome ;)
The draw is complete! head over to our facebook page to see each qualifying round and let us know who you think will be going through!
Please say Demon will be there...has to be the scariest feather out there at the minute. Is it unbeaten?
^^ Nah no Demon, he's retired now. Decimator is substantially better and more powerful anyway.
Speaking of, no decimator v mr mangle, woohoo! Will have to travel to the UK more often :D
That's just the qualifying rounds - plenty of opportunities to destroy each other on Saturday and Sunday!
Completely forgot this was happening today thanks to being busy at work, so it was some nice lunchtime reading :)
Loving my draws, they'll be challenging but fun. MMM is a great shape for a drum and currently standing at 1-1 with Galactus. And I get to square off against Hatchet and Conker again. Weird how you generally seem to fight the same robots each year, this is the 3rd year Conker & Drumroll have met in the qualis. Not calling a fix though, it's just the way these things work :)
But this time you have the honour of fighting me Jamie :D
Bring it on! my draw with disturbance mint :)...... not long now!
Whiteboards just got more interesting:

Shiny is definitely coming over for a test run. Compared to Mr Mangle is has: 4KW weapon motor (extra 1.6KW), 7mm titanium armour (slightly thinner), 8S battery pack (up from 6S), drives inverted and a bit faster.
Oh, 7mm ti armour? Is that all? Might as well have used tin foil if you're only using 7mm...
Good to hear it's coming over for a test run though, be interesting to see how it gets on! Are you going to be there for the testing day beforehand on the 8th?
As you wish: :)

Now it really lives up to it's name. I should be there later in the day for testing, after I drive up from london and pick up the bots.
DB10 v Glutton v Tormenta 3
Glutton v Little Nipper v Tormenta 3
Mr Mangle v 722 v Glutton
DB10 v Anubis v Glutton
I feel unliked now :D
Gonna be great and possibly very short
You definitely got drawn against a lot of other spinners - DB10 twice? Do you have any on-line photos of Glutton?
So Hatchet's draw for the World champs, i'll be honest it could have been better..........
Satanix 1.666 vs Hatchet vs Hardwired2 (Overdrive)
Ice Storm vs Galactus vs Hatchet
Hatchet vs Drumroll vs Conker 3
Hatchet vs Decimator vs Valkryi
"I'll bring the spare Hdpe" is now my motto
DB10 twice, Tormenta 3 twice
buildthread
Torments isn't a spinner thankfully.
Oh and Sam, yeah, your draw sucks :(.
For Tormenta 3, just look at Tormenta 2 but with hardox. It can still do all the crazy flippy things Tormenta 2 did but this one is built like a brick.
I fought tormenta 2 in Germany once. Looking forward to that fight.
Sam, I'll have the HDPE welder with me. And sheets of 5 and 10mm.
I think we'll need it.
Quick question. Are robots shortlisted for robochallenge championship events based on a robots performance throughout the year prior to this event or is it simply a random draw? Or does it go on weapon type, originality etc... no offense intended just some1 who hasnt competed seriously since 2008 who is building a competition fw for my teenage son. It wont be ready for about 8 weeks lol so just gathering info.
I have a spinner near completion so its difficult to enter other events if you get me
A little bit of all that. They want good well build machines and diversity in nationality. Experience is also a big factor.
There are some new machines but they come from reputable teams with a history of interesting/destructive/fun robots. Past showings, potential performance, machine diversity, team history all play a part.
This is the first Robochallenge event where people have had to 'audition' for places. Before now you were pretty much guaranteed a place if you signed up but with it being the world champs, having 20 or so foreign teams coming to compete and the need to have the best of the best fighting it out, things need to be done differently to get the top 50 machines in the arena.
I understand now thanks
How big are the chances that a starting polevaulter gets selected for the olympics?
If you're new I think the key is well detailed build diary.
A history of delivering the goods when it counts is a serious advantage.
Im not new im old lol. Last serious comp was rr 2007 championship and finished 3rd but that was old skool days lol. had spinners since which went on to do alrite after i sold em haha. Hard for him to run as only robochallenge has a full combat arena. Ive told him we will make a youtube vid with build pics and smashing up sum old chassis's i have, post a link here and try for the next one. It was his school project but ive got enough parts still about to knock something together for fun
When i said getting a history i meant for the robot your entering :) - though that said a team history does go half and half with that so its likely youd have a good application so long as you could really brag about the things you done in the past, then brag abit about the robot design you have currently :)
In my application i talked abit about Dystopia for example (Defector does have a strong application in itself though) - but it does help you stand out in the same way you would for a job interview i guess :)
The qualifying format as mentioned had 2 objectives.
1- Gain a number of entries from countries outside the UK.
2- Ensure we had the best 51 combat machines possible fighting for the World Championship
To do this we asked for peoples country as this would satisfy objective no.1. To fulfill the second objective we asked teams for their previous history at high profile championships including any achievements/awards. Understanding that newcomers may be more competitive or have great potential we asked for those building new robots or new teams to explain the robot they were building so we could make a decision on the final few spaces. Most robots naturally were going to gain a place because of their position in the UK championships such as Defector. It could be a poor robot or look boring but it would gain a place because its been a proven competitive machine (just an example, not saying its either of those). Diversity wasnt a deciding factor, we simply wanted the most competitive World Championships possible.
I feel both objectives have been successful. No.1 because we have more competitors attending from overseas than ever which is fantastic. No.2 is proven because nobody has an easy draw :) So we know the standard of robots people have created is amazing and I certainly cant wait to see who will be the worthy World Champion!
So looking at the draw how many points do you think your robot will score and how many will the cut off point be? My feel with Predator is I need to get 1 knockout and 3 second places would get me to 10 points but im not sure if thats enough?
10 points seems to be the tipping point for potential qualification in past years, with 12+ guaranteeing a place.
I predict DCH scoring 17 points (1 extra for being so awesome by Judges decision) ;)
I reckon a win by KO and averaging second across the rest will be fine. I'm hoping for as many wins by KO as possible (naturally) but I'm really just making it my personal goal to get to round 2 last year, since I came one point off qualifying last year. Definitely got more of a shot of it now I can drive better and have an active weapon, but the standard of machines is sky-high this year from the looks of it so it'll be tough...
I do have my looks, maybe that will sway it for me next time
The mathematics for points says that 11 will give a guaranteed place in round 2, 10 points will get you into the tie breaker for the last few places.
That's what it was last year, it depends on a few factors though I suppose. If, let's say, 4 robots won all 4 of their matches by knockout, there'd be a bunch of high scorers at the top end and on balance there'd be fewer points distributed out to the rest of the machines so I'd imagine the cutoff point might drop. Ditto if everyone got roughly a similar number of points or if there were a number of retirements. No idea how mathematically possible that would be however, but I'd imagine between 9 and 12 is probably a safe bet for the cutoff point.
Maths isn't my strong point though so I'm just going to drive into everything drum-first and hope for the best!
Many thanks for clarifying james
