Is that a custom part or is it commercially available? I can't think where you would get a heat exchange with a high enough pressure rating?

Ideally its cast and will explode :)...knowing john though he'll just wright beauty on another robot and carry on the competition though :)
There are commercial available hydraulic heat exchangers, there are heat exchangers for petrochemical processes, and that's only the start of the list.
All perfectly rated for the pressures we work with, but non are suitable for our machines.
No, for something like this, it's custom work.
Yeah... castings... they crack.
Beauty 8 is going to be fun to drive! My first go will be in the first fight so I'll have to get up to speed pretty soon. :)
Look who's come out to play ;)

Is anyone traveling up either the M1 past Northampton ot the M6 past Rugby that would be willing to make a detour and pick me up from Market Harborough? Cover the extra fuel :)
HardWired II is almost finished now, just got to put the removable link in securely (glue EC5 into a block of HDPE, bolt into top plate) and then it's all sorted. Problem is, I'm actually en route to Birmingham now - is there any chance that the Gadget Show is open for roboteers to use the pit area as a workshop for last minute things?
Well, not a full workshop but you know what I mean, I have a feeling the hotel won't like me drilling holes in this stainless in the room haha
We've had people practically rebuild their robots at the event, so you'll be fine :).
Great, that's good to hear - thanks!
At least it'll not be the first one to need repairs on-site, especially after death-by-megabus...
Is there the opportunity to fix things post tech check too if it fails? I'm really worried about it, a lot more than I should be probably haha
Yeah they give you the opportunity to fix issues if it's not up to standard.
Yes if its possible to do in the time available you can have a 2nd tech check. I'm sure its will only be something minor anyway.
That's good then, there's really not a whole lot that could be wrong with it beyond the battery mount and link, though I may just be paranoid about the battery thing, it won't fall out no matter how hard I chuck the machine around...
Hope everybody had a good day, see you all tomorrow with no toy
Today was awesome, some real upsets and some robots taking massive damage, including Hatchet which got hit by mr mangle from behind which threw the back up and the baseplate landed on his beater which shattered the 10mm polycarb baseplate
Sorry 'bout that, you really had bad luck getting hit on three sides from one hit :(. Good rebuild though, Hatchet looks and drives almost like new again.
Looked spectacular though, all credit to Dave Weston for all his help with the rebuild. Hatchet keeps getting beached so plans for tomorrow are countersink the bolts on the bottom and add an extra layer of bike tread on the wheels to hopefully sort out the clearance problem

Does anyone know how Rango performed? Did it work in the end?
It tore Utopia apart and sheared little hitters axe head off
Db10 loosened up utopia a bit first! But yes rango was very impressive.
Of course it did ;) hahaha, I didn't see DB10 fight it so I can't comment, can definitely imagine that though, loads of power in that disc
There's been some amazing hits though this year, Conker and Massacre being of the ones That comes to mind... I don't know if it's just because this is my first event or what, but it seems like the spinners are quite a bit more vicious this year!
The first rounds of the knockouts start tomorrow and we have some great fights lined up in the Robo Challenge Arena. These Robots have battled through the qualifiers during Thursday and Friday and will now compete 1-on-1 for a place in the Fighting Robots UK Featherweight Championship 2014.
TS3 Vs Flow
NST Vs DB10
Wedgie Vs 720
Ricochet Vs Rango
Loki Vs Beauty 8
Galactus Vs Defector
Explosion Vs LH3
Gianto Vs Beauty 2
Satanix Vs Drumroll 2
So many , so many....
There are going to be some awesome fights!
I don't know who I'd put my money on this year, there's some very tough competition!
Has any of the fights lasted longer than 2 minuets? all I have seen at the moment are videos of beauty 8 flipping everything out in 10 seconds!
I don't recall any of the main competition matches lasting a full 3 minutes today; its been much more brutal than last year's videos suggested.
The main competition fights rarely did, a good few shockers this year (particularly the seeds that were knocked out!) and generally quite vicious competition. Tomorrow's fights will be very interesting indeed!
Going to be some really good videos to watch back!
Certainly!
Does anyone happen to have that first whiteboard fight on video? I want to watch back the bit when I drifted across a full corner of the arena haha
Congratulations to all the winners, especially Ellis for getting Rango onto the podium after so many problems!

I had a great time and will be back to win a shiny trophy.
Thanks to everyone for the most memorable event yet. I think this year is going to have some stunning footage and be talked about for quite some time.
Conker 3 limps away on 3 wheels with just 7 points. The the 3D case is going to be replaced with a titanium box for next year and once the Hardox is straightened and the rear bar is replaced she will be good to go again. The truly single tooth whisk has made it mark, literally, but will need to be stiffened up to continually deal out the punishment it did. The 3D printed drive system is still perfectly fine so I will be keeping that for next year.
Binky, surprisingly, goes home with 9 points and only a broken tooth. If it hadn't been for the errors we it could have been up there in the second round at least. With better drive for next year and a secondary weapon for different targets she will be back to deal out more damage. I am still surprised at how well she shruggs of spinners when they hit the rear armour but she will be getting reinforcements anyway.
PS: Thanks to everyone for looking out for my wallet. We found it buried in the bottom of one of the box's when we got home. I think it topped in there when I was shifting things round.
Congratulations to the winners and runners up it was a truly amazing event and thank you to everyone for being so accepting of a newcomer and especially thank you to anyone who either pitched in to fix Hatchet or who offered parts so that it could compete. The current version of Hatchet will live on for a while, the chassis is still usable despite taking huge punishment from the spinners but the speed controllers for the drive, batteries and axe mechanism will all need an upgrade to get it working. I'll be going for a lipo seeing as they're pretty much the standard now and also some TZ85's for the drive, the axe needs to be on a larger reduction and really needs to be using stronger chain ( it broke a chain in almost every battle) so that will be going from 6mm to 8mm, again a huge thank you to everyone that made my first event such an enjoyable experience and i hope too see you all again at some more events once Hatchet has been fixed.
What a great year for robot combat, all the robots were better then ever well done to team beast for getting there hands back on the trophy. Had a great time fighting, watching and generally just chatting with you all.
fairly happy with no toys 9 points total more power required on the axe tip for next year.
hope you have a safe journey home
adam and louise
I had an excellent time despite Massacre being about three kinds of rubbish.
I did enjoy the longer competition formula but I still keep my reservations about it with regards to booking longer times off work etc.
Congratulations to the Beauty robots of course for taking first and second but more so to Ellis for taking 3rd place with a robot that struggled to move under its own weight a week ago. I would also like to thank Ellis and Peter Ware for the lift to the event, their help with Massacre and generally making sure I ate and slept over the days! Thanks also to all the Robochallange guys for the organisation.
So many great guys were around, your company was wonderful and everyone was so helpful. It was great meeting Matt from Hardwired and Sam from Hatchet, really good guys and I hope to see you again at the next one. Thanks to Nick for talking me through Mr Mangle and humouring my stupid questions. There is more, but they know who they are.
Can't wait for the next one!
Right back at you, Haz - great meeting you too!
I have to say, I've had an absolute blast these last few days, thanks to everyone involved for just being so friendly and helpful - it's been such an incredible time and I was genuinely gutted to have to go home at the end of it all really...
Will definitely be improving HardWired II and coming back next year to get more than 8 points, and to as many events as I can inbetween! HardWired III may also be a thing by next year's champs bit we'll see... Huge thanks to Mario for all the help putting the machine together, it wouldn't be the absolute brick it is now without such a solid design and construction!
Congrats to John for that 1-2 victory (and to John and Will for ace driving) as well as Rango and Defector for a very well deserved 3rd and 4th respectively! Everyone's done brilliant though, it seems to have been extremely close this year, compared to what I've seen from previous years! Just goes to show the machines are always getting better!
Again, thanks everyone for such a great time, I've enjoyed every minute of it - it's been great meeting everyone too, hope to see you all again soon!
