we are planning to introduce a new cadet class ruleset at this event for schools and youth organizations in north wales. no spinners, no co2, no metal chassis, armour or weapons. Anyone any opinions? if people like it ill put it to the fra to see if they will endorse it
James do you not think that running multiple Cadet Class rulesets will just get confusing ?
... perhaps not calling it Cadet Class might help ?

James, why dont you speak to Ed, jonno, Paul Cooper and James and between everyone come up with a good rule set for this kind of thing? Considering most of them do the school building anyway it could be useful to have them all the same.
Ed has a good rule set for his more basic feathers that could be easily adapted.

if i agreed with that i wouldnt have written my rules. no offense to Ed, bu Id prefer if the schools I work with didnt have hardox armoured spinners, whats cadet about that?

lol, yeah, right, that would work. My rules are in schools already, and are not changing. The question was, would the FRA concider adopting them, which was also a suggection that XFM may concider using them instead of your current rules, which basically ban scoprion but not much else. in what crazy world an ev warrior powered all hadox macine can be concidered cadet is beyond me, but hey, if the rules work....
No offense meant, I was just asking if anyone here wanted to use the rules, guess not.
1. Create a new thread for discussion.
2. Post the rules you propose.
Last time I saw the cadet rules posted, motor power was limited to 150W (isnt an EV more than this?), spinning masses were restricted to 1kg, and hardox armour was certainly off the menu - I thought that was still the case?
As Kane says though, are you able to post the rules you use in schools, just to get an overview?

no metal chassis, armour or weapons
I can see the reasoning behind this but I think you need to be allowed to use some sort of metal (to me it doesnt really feel like a robot if I dont use metal to some degree :)) at least in the weapon systems anyway. From what I can gather, without metal the materials are limited to wood, poly, or similar, but if someone makes a crushing bot for this class, theyre gonna need the structural strength of metal (at least on the claw/jaws) to stand any chance of being effective. Even if you allow aluminium and (possibly old computer desk) steel to be used, the bots could still sustain damage (they wouldnt be completely invincible as they almost would be with hardox) and the feeling of robot fighting - metal crashing off metal - will still be there.
Just my two pennies worth
ill post the rules in the next few day.
as to the metal for crusher this is the beauty of the rules. If you want to build a crusher, the other robot is only plastic, but then so are you! so there is no huge advantage.
axe power is limited by the fact your axe is plastic, rammers must be careful not to break themselves.
All of the engineering challenges we face with metal robots dont change with the plastic ones, they are still there, its just a schoolkid will fing it harder to chop his/her fingers off. Im sure they will find new and exciting ways to hurt themselves, but in principal it is safer.
Polycarb is not the only plastic by the way, a whole new world of materials is just waiting for you in this area.
basic motor rules (as ive not access to my removable hard-drive to gve you full rules)
drill motors up o and including 550 size.
ANY standard motor from a mass produced standard car. (make believe astroflights from the seat mech in your mclaren F! are not allowed :) )
yes, you can use the massive fan motors, or starter motors, but remeber, your robot is plastic...... it will break
I may rethink the name of the class if people here like it. any suggestion? Ed did make one suggestion, buy I dont think I can post the word crappy :)
How about Student Class ? Or Pupil Class ?
I doubt they would be happy with N00bie Class however...:proud:
Were currently looking at the Cadet Class situation. Its been promoted to schools but the recent arena guideline changes would mean that we cant run Cadet Class in the XFM arena which gives us a small issue !
