Re: team combat penguin build diarys
trying to remember the layout from when i owned it, but i cant tell without the weapon gearbox/motors in place. After i had the tooth converted to single, impacts used to cause one of the drive motors to knacker up all the time, and that motor always had a dent in the casing from when one of the weapon motors was too close to it, if this has never been rectified you want to re-position drive motors very slightly, so their not so close.

Re: team combat penguin build diarys
Mario made the gearbox, And Robo Challenge modded the disk to be single tooth.
Before the first event I used it I had to rebuild the gearbox and straighten the frame out as (looking from above /behind) the right weapon motor was hard pressed against the right drive motor and the gearbox skipped a tooth or two every so often and kept jamming and blowing relays. That was easily fixed.
The reason it was putting a dent in a drive motor before was because the frame that carries the disk and gearbox was only connected to the rear part of the frame that carries the drive motors by a single piece of flat bar that had a massive square cut out in it.
At the UK Champs the robot lasted 1 hit untill it completely smashed a drive motor. I replaced the broken motor for the next fight and the same happened again. I managed to bodge it for the rest of the event but only one drive motor worked properly throughout the event, If you watch the videos back it hardly ever has drive on one side of the robot but still managed to do well and come 3rd. With spinners as long as you keep the big spinny thing aimed at your oppenents robot you should be fine.
Over the weekend of the UK champs the gearbox locked up a few times and was blowing relays again. I think i went through 3 of them. In the semi final the gearbox pretty muched locked intantly and blew a relay after one hit. The only reason the robot made it into the play offs was because Gary let me use the relay from Hornet II.
After the UK Champs I put an extra brace bar on both sides from the rear frame to the front frame to stop it twisting. Never had problems with the fame twisting after that.
I used it at the Tag Champs and all that really let it down was the gearbox, I hadnt repaired it after the punishment it got at the UK Champs when the frame was weak so the gearbox was still slipping.
If the motors had been tightened back up before the tag champs it would have been fine.

Re: team combat penguin build diarys
The robot changed a little bit aswell.
It had the full body remade. It has thicker armor than before and the full robot is smaller. Its about 20mm narrower and 30mm shorter than before.
The tip of the disk was about 40mm off the floor, I lowered the full robot and tilted the disk so it is only 5mm from the floor. Also to do this the front frame was cut down alot then plated and braced, So its stronger now.
The gearbox is nice, Its a well made little thing but the punishment of the right weapon motor hitting the right drive motor every hit basically started ripping the motor from its mount, and with them bevel gears if the drive motor is loose and moves back out of the mount a milimeter or two the gears dont mesh and thats why it was slipping, if you pushed the motor into place and held it there it worked perfect.

Re: team combat penguin build diarys
new robot i've been working on-barnsleybot. just something i knocked together for barnsley out of 6mm hdpe and a couple gimpsons. i doubt it'll be effective but should be fun atleast :D. still needs a bit of work, a battery and a rx but it runs. also i need to put bike tyre on the wheels and add more weight over the wheels.

the wheels are 170mm :)

promise i am not copying billy, ive just had all the parts for my 4wd gimpson driven electic lifter
video up shortly

Re: team combat penguin build diarys
Hey mine is a 4wd gimson driven electric lifter... ;) lol ... Hopefully be running soon.
-
Re: team combat penguin build diarys
Mine is a 4-drill-drive electric lifter! I feel left behind, drills have gone from best for the price to dodgy old tech overnight!
-
Re: team combat penguin build diarys
dw, Laser's a 4wd drill motor lifter, but it has a dewalt for the lifter now :D
-
Re: team combat penguin build diarys
well i like 4wd lifters, and i also like 4wd lifters but i also like 4wd lifters, then again i quite like 4wd lifters
but which is better?
only one way to find out!

Re: team combat penguin build diarys
Missing a couple of wheels there if you want to stake your claim Harry :P
EDIT: Besides, Kaizer's the best. Okay so I don't own it now, but allegiances still lie :)

Re: team combat penguin build diarys
I think ill change mine to three wheeled drive now ;)

Re: team combat penguin build diarys
Not once I'm finished with it ;)

Re: team combat penguin build diarys
What you doing with the current ML then? Keep running it?

Converted one of mine to three wheels, not as easy as it seems!
May need to crack out some omni-wheels.

Re: team combat penguin build diarys
Bah my FW is also going to be a 4wd drill motor lifter, scary similar to laser and kaizer :/
Maybe i should add some fur to make it stand out? :P

Re: team combat penguin build diarys
Falls apart. Cheeky beggar. It's only the front panels. It took LS3 to get anything else off.
Kaizer did fall into disrepair though. I was distracted building a pneumatic flipper so it got worse & worse. Didn't help that the lack of end switches was slowly destroying the lifter everytime I switched the machine on.
Still Dave's got it atm & is removing the weaknesses. He's started well by removing me. lol.

since this forum is far too boring, thought i would share what i have been doing (with Jonny) for the last few days

Re: team combat penguin build diarys
18V was scary!
If you do decide to go brushless, just go for one motor. 360 ran two brushless motors originally but changed to one slightly larger one (can't remember the exact reasons why) but the weapon appears to have been more reliable since then. Plus you've got double the costs with two motors and two ESCs.

Re: team combat penguin build diarys
gave it another spin up on a fully charged 12v battery, was much better. span up in a couple of seconds and no smoke this time :proud:

Re: team combat penguin build diarys
awesome :proud:
note to self: get aluminum chequerplate round to jonnys

Re: team combat penguin build diarys
It's looking really good mate. Bet it's got some grunt behind it now with those Gimsons! Get some videos of it in the arena, interested to see how it compares to your average four drill pusher. :)

Re: team combat penguin build diarys
looks gr8 m8, does it self right now?
-
Re: team combat penguin build diarys
thanks guys, theorecticly it should self right, will have to test that tomorow :)
debating weather to chuck a few more cells in just to make it exiting but im pushing my luck as is

Re: team combat penguin build diarys
Looking good Haz, much beefier looking with 4-wheel-drive. Kind of ironic that you've used Gimson motors in a robot that used to belong to the man himself :)

Re: team combat penguin build diarys
I love the fact that we are using the same motors in the same configuration with the same wheels with the same ESC's and yet have tow totally different designs! This is the stage mine is up to as of this afternoon...
[attachment=0:tk4i3uxs]DSC00731 S.jpeg[/attachment:tk4i3uxs]
Been having problems mounting the 900s so they make the pulley's for the weapon suitably tensioned and I know I am going to have problems making up a Metal box for my LiPo's :uhoh:
But that is going to be great to fight against! I look forward to meeting you in combat!

cool
is it easy to work with
is it plenty strong enough for a feather?
good work
-
Re: team combat penguin build diarys
its t6 stuff, so its pretty solid for a base.
its okay to work with provided you have the right tools

Re: team combat penguin build diarys
which would be
hacksaw?
got a nice pillar drill

Re: team combat penguin build diarys
i used a jigsaw. was a bit hard and i snapped one blade, been cutting alu for a while with it though.
hacksaw would do it but it would take a while
