Re: New FW database (new robots)
Ian
I€™m looking forward to seeing it in action. I found for cutting the Poly a wood saw from Argos was best, and to de-bur the cut I found rubbing an old 12€ steel rule along the edge did the trick!
Mine wont be ready for Swindon but should be ready for Guildford if I can get the spare funds for the Battery packs and the DX5 radio.
See you guys at Swindon :D :D :D

How big Craig?? ...and you claim it's a feather! :? ...I gotta see this on a set of scales.

The weight should be well in the limit!
I hope to bring the Work in progress to Swindon so you can

More batteries = more weight :) I'm currently using this method to get more power and speed, I stepped up from 19.8v to 39.6v and I'm starting to limit of the motor (12v motor @ near 40v). If I could run that motor at full power all the time, I could get away with probably 26.4v instead to get the same power.
Hmm, maybe we need a Melty Brain thread instead of OT'ing this thread:P

Re: New FW database (new robots)
Lmao, epic 8)
Nice work Craig. What motors are driving it?
-
Re: New FW database (new robots)
MFA 975D these are 12v motors (running at 14.4v) Motor dia aprox 45mm they are coupled to all metal planetary gearboxes so final drive speed will be aprox 80rpm to 500mm dia wheels!
:D
I hope the weight should be around 12.5Kg with out the batteries they weigh about 900g so I should be ok.

Re: New FW database (new robots)
Nearly completed, just need to clean up the edges, due to my dodgy cutting, fit an LED and it should be ready to get beaten up. :proud:
All it needs now is a name. :?:

Transparent Rugged Ingenious Pentagon Of Doom
A.K.A: Tripod :)

Re: New FW database (new robots)
I like the TRIPOD one  but is the doom there's or ours?
-
Re: New FW database (new robots)
You bring the doom crashing down on them by attacking them with your TRIPOD :)

Re: New FW database (new robots)
Just done some testing with Seraphim and found it works well without any steel armour/Counterbalance plate on the front this saves 2.3Kg!! and now makes the robot about 12 Kg weight. :D :D
I may put a bit back on so I can fit a longer sword, or an axe. What do you think it needs?

Re: New FW database (new robots)
smaller wheels so i can reach it

Re: New FW database (new robots)
Who can stand against The Great Seraphim?
I was wondering if anyone was willing to try to push Seraphim in the pit, or flip it OOTA, there is a fiver for the first to do this, anyone brave enough to try!! :uhoh: :uhoh: :uhoh:

Re: New FW database (new robots)
I'll give it a go Craig.......the main body looks at just the right height to catch hornets disc perfectly

Re: New FW database (new robots)
This sounds like an interesting challenge!!
Since my exams finish next week that should leave plenty of time to get Whirlwind up and running so I can have a go at getting Seraphim OOTA
Anyway here are the stats for Whirlwind
Weight ~13.6kg
Length ~40cm
Width ~50cm
Height ~ 20cm
Weapon- FP Flipper with a 60mm bore, 80mm Stroke ram fired by a burket with a 9oz painball bottle for the buffer tank.
Drive: 2x 50:1 MFA motors running at 24v with 80mm diameter wheels
Speedo: Scorpion XL
Batteries: 3700mAh 24v Ni-Mh
Radio- DX6i with AR500 rx
Armour- 3mm Aluminium frame with 10mm Nylon/HDPE base with 5mm Welded HDPE armour
Notes: Should be ready for RIAT
Also here is my brothers replacement for Shockwave
Name: Heatwave
Weight ~13.6kg
Weapon- FP flipper with a 45mm bore, 50mm stroke ram, fired by a burket with a buffer.
Drive: 2x 18v Drills running at 24v with 75mm wheels
Speedo: Scorpion XL
Batteries: 3700mAh 24v Ni-Mh
Radio: DX5e with BR6000 rx
Armour 5mm HDPE on 3mm Aluminium frame
Notes: Should be ready for Guildford

Re: New FW database (new robots)
May be subject to change - design is done, and a fair number of the parts have been acquired already though.
THE DESTROYING ANGEL:
Weight ~13.6kg
Length ~40cm
Width ~30cm
Height ~6cm
Weapon: ~4kg overhead horizontal spinning bar, powered by dual brushless outrunners through a spiral bevel gearbox. Torque limiter on the weapon shaft to remove some of the shock loading from the gears and motors.
Drive: Dual 550 motors through Banebots gearboxes.
ESC: Sabertooth
Radio: Spektrum dx5e
Batteries: 12x A123 cells (4 for drive, 8 for the weapon)
Armour: 3mm 6-4 Ti top and bottom, 10mm UHMWPE sides with hardox front wedge and 3.2mm hardox side plates. If I end up having the weight, I'll put a couple of mm of Ti on the rear.
Should be running in time for the tag champs ;)

Re: New FW database (new robots)
the second one looks slick and effective
but either would be great!!!!
-
Re: New FW database (new robots)
They both look great. Now to answer your question,
In my opinion I would build neither.
Both of them look great but there are some problems in the design that will make them either less controllable or less destructive than they could be.
Concept 1 - The major problem I can see here is the ratio of the wheelbase, to the distance between the centre of the disc and the centre of the wheels. Basically I think you're wheels need to be wider apart or the bar has to be closer in to the machine. Otherwise you have a huge resistance when trying to turn the machine that will react in relatively poor maneuverability in the arena.
Concept 2 - If I understand the design correctly (and please correct me if I'm wrong) you have both a full bodied spinner with a bar spinner attached? If this is indeed the case then I would advise only going for one or the other. Machines with two weapons have rarely ever worked well. I can't think of any machines with two weapons that have gone especially far in any competitions (waits for a raft of examples). I would either build a full bodied spinner or build a bar spinner but not both. As I'm sure the big nipper guys will now confirm building a FBS is tricky at the best of times! If this concept is just a bar spinner on its own then I would suggest also increasing the wheelbase for improved maneuverability.
I have just read back over what I typed and I'm not going to lie, its to the point to say the least but please don't take offense. I know i'd rather have someones honest opinions and ideas on improvements than a dozen people telling me they are awesome.

Re: New FW database (new robots)
I like design 1. It looks more of a Tony Booth robot. With the time you put into the paint jobs it would look awsome. And with only 1 spinning bar you can have more power and weight behind it.
-
Re: New FW database (new robots)
I prefer the looks of 1, but 2 has better protection for its wheels.
-
Re: New FW database (new robots)
To Gary
When ever had controll of any of my spinners drive wise.
would just change it to a straight bar on version 1.
Version 2. The bar will spin in the opposite direction to the ring spinner. The bar will be belt driven the ring spinner will be friction driven both using brushless motors might take a bit will be costly.

Re: New FW database (new robots)
a few more designs to consider
-
Re: New FW database (new robots)
I'd stick with one of the previous ones, they are much more your style imho.
-
Re: New FW database (new robots)
Maybe but the chassie is built for the third one
-
Re: New FW database (new robots)
then take the third chassis and make it look similar to the first one :)
-
Re: New FW database (new robots)
-
Re: New FW database (new robots)
I like the second one - its a new design that has never been done before!
Nice thinking...... would love to see it in the arena
