sorry to bump this but but have you shown the rose family what youve built? just asking :)
not really, Ive never met them personally.
For the filming of the gadget show a few weeks ago (due to be shown on the 15th) i told grant and James i wouldn't do the show unless i had a contract signed by Dave rose and the gadgetshow to make sure i'm not liable to be sued for using the image.. Dave signed it as far as i'm aware, so in a way i now kinda have the rights to use the image- just not the name hypnodisc.
They've seen some of the youtube videos of 360 and im told its got them motivated to start putting hypnodisc back together so we can take some pictures of hypno and 360 together in the summer some time. would be good to get hypno on static next to my bench at robochallenge events :)
build diary update
Nothing interesting- ive got one of my castle creations escs back from joe ford in texas, im just waiting for ed to cnc me a new motor mount for the new motor- got rid of dual brushless going for the one biggun... lost 130g of speedo and a 100g or so of gearbox so im going to upgrade the wheel arches to titanium at some point. Havnt got alot of time anymore and im trying to have abit of a break from robots for abit, until the rush for the next event :)
Hint hint. Maybe next week.
Has 360 fought Venom or going to as this will give everyone an idea of the result of the battle that never happened because of bigger brother............. Razer v hypno-disc :)
I dont think james will want to put venom in with 360. its too nice to risk geting damaged alot.
Nope it's never happened, doubt it will. Venom wouldn't do any damage to 360. Unlike the damage razer could of inflicted on hypnodisc. James uses venom alot for doing demos these days so it's to valuble to him to risk getting smashed. Although I would like to fight it.
wonder if Ian Lewis and Simon scott would build a new more powerful featherweight Razer to fight it :rofl:
James (the builder of venom) is part of the razer team... and maybe he is working on something better :)
why didnt 360 self right on the gadget show?
was running 4s not 6s, so it wouldn't do it due to the lack of battery power running on the lower voltage. I could of put a booster pack inline to up the voltage to the arm, as i knew going into the fight the self righter wouldn't work, but i knew the producers would prefer it if they won so i didn't bother, the fight looked good for TV, that's all that matters.
If id wanted to win i wouldn't of gone head on at full speed to a robot with only one wheel working and 2mm aluminum side armor :D
i was thinking that the producers didnt want it trashed
The producers just wanted a good TV show - and hopefully thats how it turned out :D
360's brush housing on the astro snapped off actually which was the reason it didnt work after inspection lol - shame as it would have been good to see another hit.
Yeah its a pity there was only one hit on it as it meant we couldn't see some combat-induced gyro-dancing; at least they got a few seconds of that in the clip beforehand. And just to repeat what Dave said in the other thread, 360 looked amazing in the pre-fight shots!
Just one question (sorry it's a bit off-topic):
Grant, those scantily-clad women holding up the boards for Fight 1, Fight 2 etc, how come we've never had that luxury when we've been to your events?? :rofl:
The selfwrighter wouldnt of worked anyhow grant even if the astro didnt get damaged- like i said it doesnt work on 4s, it doesnt have enough power to run on anything under 6.
lol she charges money lol and she could put the younger drivers off a bit ;)Quote:

Just the younger ones Mr Lear?
Took the words right out of my mounth Clive!
Ed- can i swing by and pickup my motor and old gearbox at some point, going to just put it back together as it was and run it on the new motor with the old gearbox, its just easyer and i need to prove the motor and esc are going to work reliably before anything is machined...
Few pics from the gadgetshow of 360 doing its break dancing :) ;

jamie im all for that aswell but my driving isnt great as it is already
wud end up being even worse lol
and cool lookin pics dave good to see all the hard work has started to pay off
stuff for a new beetle weight ordered from robot market place. Just need to decide what setup to use on the weapon and ill start designing a chassis for it all Probably going to be a brushless drum with the motor built into the drum to save space.
the above videi dave says this

I know yeah. Glen uploaded it for me was 360s bits from gadget show- i guess someone grassed him up and he had to take it off. never mind :)
Thanks to Tim for designing my disc for me for my beetle- would of done it myself but dont have the right program to design a single tooth blade, should be around 130grams when done and go at 15000rpm, 20mm wide p20 tool steel, getting Kenny to machine it when he gets time as i was really pleased with the job he did on 360's blade;

Ed's machining my new motor mount for 360s disc Tuesday hopefully ready in time for gadgetshow live.. pics of that when its done :)
new motor mount done thanks to Ed..i designed it to support the front of the motor so the front face of the motor (the non turning part) is counter bored into the mount, meaning its abit better supported and acts as a nice heatsink, it also has two holes drilled for weight loss which will aid in cooling for the motor as they line up with holes in the front plate :).. it also has a bearing mounted in it to take any force away from the bearing in the front of the motor.. just got to make a bigger shaft for the motor now to fit in nicely.

also found a tiny valve in my draw of odd bits and made a little valve block for it.. think my beetlweight will be pneumatic.. decided its impossible to make a robot thats 1.3kg that will do damage to thick armour ive seen on a few of the beetleweights already built.. and no one else has made a flippy one yet :)
Mmm, sexy motor mount 8)
Good init! Would have put a nice chamfer around it if I had more time, maybe at some point in the future when Im not hungry after work.
lol i hope that dinner you had to leave for was really nice. :lame:
Replacement motor axle done;
http://i685.photobucket.com/albums/v...s/5fda3dcc.jpg
Also hadnt weighed it all together in ages, so stacked up all the parts and put it on the scales..

350g underweight.. think i might upgrade the drive next and go upto 6s lipo for abit more speed and power so i can use the magnet. should be around 13.5kg then.
Right got the new motor in along with the castle creations ice 160 esc and did a few spinup tests and noticed it wasnt that great, so hooked it up the built in data logging to my laptop and messed about with the motor and current settings and now it seems spot on, got to give it to the castle creations guys they've built one of hell of an esc and im really happy with it so far. Did a quick spin up test so i could see the graph, below is a quick shot of it.
http://i685.photobucket.com/albums/v...360datajpg.jpg
That was spinning the motor up, then down to half speed, back upto full.. then down to nothing upto full really fast so i could see were the current limiter kicked in.. and true to the programing in the esc it cuts in just were i set it to...
But as you can see the continuous speed of the disc (you can enter your gear ratio so it works it out for you) is just under 4300 rpm... but it was still going up a little when i took the throttle off and the current needed to spinup is 256amps... not surprised really. Also it shows the voltage drop of the lipo is negligible so im happy with that's performance.
To anyone thinking of going to brushless i would highly recommend this esc!
Next thing i want to do is do a spin up to full speed test, run it there for 10 seconds then spin it down to see what the current and voltage evens out to.. Id also like to have a look at it after a fight to see how things are performing. At the moment its looking like i could possibly do with a slightly better lipo pack, but the one Ive got will be fine for this weeks show at gadgetshow live.
...i better stop messing about with data logging and put the thing together :)
Done another spin up test and this is the graph;
http://i685.photobucket.com/albums/v...r10seconds.jpg
I span it up a bit slower this time so the peak current draw isn't as high and the spin up time is a lot slower.. but the graphs easier to read, i kept it at full whack for 10seconds so i could see what everything leveled out to...
It evened out to a continuous current draw of 44amps which i'm happy with and this time the top speed reached 4663 RPM :angry: Pretty chuffed..
Also the self-righter should be working for this weekend...
Next thing to do is properly combat test the controller!
Ed said I could use DB5 to test against 360 on the sunday. And John Lear has asked to film Beauty fighting it on one of the weekend days.
(well, i think ed may have said it CANT fight 360, but i dont belive i heard him right :proud: )
just remember if the link comes out please STOP
but will test friday :) i belive little spinner is there :)
john its a 3minuite fight... 3 minutes means 3 minuets link or no link :lol: ..
So can me and Little spinner team up against beauty?..if your so good you'll beat us both easy :)
No I didn't Grant!!! Not unless I'm there. It comes back to me in 1 piece this time.
selfwrighters dead again :( both speedos are blown, blew the first board not sure why, put the spare in and that blew 3 tracks when under load but worked fine on the bench, so repaired that and it went again in the same way as the first.. not sure whats wrong with them.. think its a job for Mr gamble when he gets chance.
I think the fault is just as much mechanical as electrical, It sounded like a problem with the selfwrighter gearbox, took it apart and found the last stage in the worms can effectively pop out and jam up, i think its that which is causing the motor to stall which blows the controller.. Its an easy fix for the gearbox, a nylon spacer or a circlip on the shaft. still anoying thought because its going to be another event were its not working again... :(.. its only a guess though, that might not of been the problem at all. Ill find out when i get the controllers back from Dave.
..on the up side the disc and the drive are working spot on :)
got all the bits for my beetleweight now. going to start machining the motor mounts at work tomorow and cut out the basic chassis over the week when i get time, Going to make it all from ti hopefully.

got your socks inside out dave
finally someone said it, i didnt wana hurt his feelings
