It wouldn't be so bad if they weren't stoood RIGHT THERE next to active robots!
DragonCon's been like that for years, they don't allow spinners (obviously) and there are limitations on weapons but there doesn't appear to have been any serious accidents (although I haven't studied any event in detail).
Personally, I quite like their close-up approach.
those guys genuinly seem nuts but its very quick to start and stop battles though :)
All of their spinning weapons have a limited tip speed of 20 feet/sec to limit KE levels and make it safe(ish)
Yeah they're more like rotational electric lifters/flippers than spinners, but it seems to work quite well. I especially love Dale Heatherington's electric rotary flipper: http://www.wa4dsy.com/robot/omegaforce2-robot
