rebuildng feather atm, keeping the same motors and mounts, just changed the wheels from 100mm down to 75mm i may put some bike tire around it to give it a little more ground clearance though.

Looking good so far Harry, I'll be watching how you get on with the axe mechanism with interest, seeing as I'll hopefully be able to start prototype construction of mine soon. Although I'll be more interested to see how you get on fitting a scooter motor (250W?), associated chains and sprockets etc into 2.6kg :)
200 watt one, yes :) its going to be tight, maybe need to use lighter batterys (lipo?) and odds and sods :P
How heavy is the hammer? If you're really struggling for weight, you could get one custom made that would probably be a little lighter. Could have a longer arm on it too to hit stuff further away.
its 1kg so not much weight can be lost there, first for me being overweight with a robot. maybe the 3mm mild steel all round may be part of the problem.......nah
Yeah don't really want to go lighter than 1kg with an electric axe. Doubt it's the shell that's pushing you close to the weight, steel's really light. I reckon it's those super heavy blue wheels :uhoh: :lol:

This all started by a mad idea at about ten o clock at night while chatting to Henry on MSN, all of team combat penguin, i.e. me, Henry, his dad and Jonny (although he didn€™t know it yet) are to build a heavyweight robot with a difference. The difference being as cheap as possible for a good(ish) robot. Heavys had proved too expensive for me and Jonny and too complicated for Henry and his dad (not-quite-newcomers at the time) so we decided to put forward £40 or £50 each bringing us to around £200 this would be do able if we were extremely careful with our purchases and careful with our cutting. The plan is so far for a pretty basic invertable wedge, mainly to deal with the flipper dominated weightclass. We also planned to make it out of a type of plastic called HDPE which I use on most of my smaller robots and is pretty tough. We are going for a 2cm thick sheet of it for armour and structure, along with steel box section. I'm going to do this as we go so by the time anybody reads this we have something to show for it.

Well today I spent an hour doing some good old fashion PAD (pencil aided design) and you would not believe how hard it is to design....a wedge. The answer is bloody hard! But now I feel I€™ve cracked it. (Insert my deranged drawing here) only to have Henry pick a devastating flaw in it in seconds: when it is running inverted, the scoop is useless. Back to the drawing board for me then! Talked a bit more parts and I think the best way to do it is to cannibalise a wheelchair for its joystick, motors and wheels. Then rig up the joystick to some servos, and done! Me and Jonny are off to the robots live in Worthing tomorrow to fight my featherweight, Murphy€™s Law and check out some Heavys (also fight antweights and kilobots and drink large amounts of Pepsi max). Also been talking to some people about motors so I may pick them up tomorrow, yay!

Crazy tired after robots live, my feather now needs some urgent TLC (get the hammer!) and my ants need a little work too. Also asked Jonny about this and he declined saying he didn€™t want to be part of this, here€™s hoping he will change his tune once we get something moving, still trying to come up with a name for the thing. Time for sleep.

Progress, progress, progress well, I€™m tired and slightly angry but still, we have radio gear and a way of moving it, all for under £100 not too shabby. Been cobbling together an esc out of some relays it seems to work ok-ish, not very precise but hey it works. I will try to find some pictures; need to get the HDPE ordered so we can start.

Well finally sourced some wheelchair motors off of Gary, £25 for four! Bloody hell! I think this means that they will take a bit of work to get them running but they are so cheap Got the bottom part of the frame marked out and ready to cut and weld.

Motors finally arrived today, so that was all good had a look at them and they all work! Ordered some sprockets and chain to make some kind of gearing, I don€™t really know what is a good ratio so I bought a variety of sizes. Instead of the cheaply relays or the joystick we got some 200a 4QD€™s off of Tony Smith, bloody lovely. The sides are not ready to be cut, a job for the near future.

4QDs arrived today, happy days! That going to be fun to play around with, printed off the manual to make sure I don€™t break anything. I will be making a start on the motor mounts and gearing, see if I can get that done tomorrow.

what gear ratio is recomended for a hw, i want reasonable speed and power, i will be running 24v wheelchair motors on 36v with a 30cm wheel

on the case of the motors it says 115rpm

the motors have the making of what looks like a worm gear setup on them, would it be easy to get a set like this going?
looking to have a solid, reliable drive for this bot, i have acess to a lathe but im guessing that isn't much use unless i need to make some shafts, does anybody have the capabilitys(or know of someone who does) to make the acual casing for the gears to sit in and to hold it together?

your best to turn the teeth off the motor so you have a plain shaft, and then use chain. Will cost alot to have gearboxs made.

You might be able to throw some gearboxes together using Nylon (I wouldn't use anything softer, like HDPE) if you have access to a semi-decent pillar drill. A few years back I sent a couple of pieces of Nylon to Matt Davey (Tuff Luck) and when I turned up at an event two weeks later, he had got them drilled out to use as Speed 900 gearboxes, and they looked pretty nice.
They were just one-stage and one peice per gearbox. Making a more traditional gearbox with two sides, and getting everything lined up etc could be more challenging, but it could be a possible low-cost solution.
