HIya guys,
Sorry i didn€™t manage to do it last night.... Firstly, I knew there was a reason why I wasn€™t originally posting last night when my wife reminded me that we were going out to the Nottingham festival... no excuses as I don€™t get many days off.
Got back at 11:15pm, and then spent over an hour trying to get my internet to work... damn thing !!!
Gave up after I tried one last time at 1am.
Anyway, better late than never .
Firstly the seeds for the 2007 UK Champs.
There are 8 seeds for this year€™s competition, and they are chosen from the results of the 2006 competitions over the year.
They are:
1) Turbulence
2) Iron Awe3
3) Kan Opener
4) Big Nipper
5) Terrorhurtz
6) Dantomkia
7) Ripper
8) Beast
The competitors have once again been split into pods. Each pod will feature 3 robots, and include 1 seed. Each robot will fight the robots in its respective pod in the first round. Guaranteeing two fights per robot before they can effectively be knocked out. Points will be awarded by the judges, and the highest scoring robot from each pod will go through to the next round.
We have had a quite a few drop outs, and non confirmed entry€™s over the last week as we knew we would, and so it is now a 24 robot competition with several reserves, which fits a lot better into the 3 days of the competition.
We will be running the main UK Championships throughout, losers from the first round will then be asked if they want to take part in a 6 robot annihilator. And the others will be used for white boards.
There will be a Feather Weight competition of which entry will be sorted out when at the Uk champs.
The list.
Pod A - Turbulence(1) v Tan v Kapow
Pod B - Big Nipper(4) v Envy v Leveler
Pod C - Iron awe 3(2) v Tilly Ewe2 v Iron Awe 5
Pod D - Beast(8) v Tanglefoot v Tiberious
Pod E - Kan Opener(3) v Das Gepack v Thor
Pod F - Dantomkia(6) v Scorpion v Edgehog
Pod G - Terrorhurtz(5) v Velocirippa v Infinity
Pod H - Ripper(7) v Obsidian v Hive
There will be lots more information coming to you on Friday this week, ( originally planned with the draw results ).
Enjoy and Good Luck Everyone !!!
Regards
John

Easily beaten!
Give me back those 4 Burkert valves Mouldy!
Jeroen .... Isnt it about time you returned your 3 port F.P. Valve to me?
leveler thats an oota for me then, thats if big nipper dont pit me first. best get shaving the front scoop.
Worth a try Alan!
Yep, thats a tough heat Andy, although with the reduced numbers I reckon the percentage a top-flight machines is now higher so its bound to be tough. Not an easy heat for Kan-Opener either- Das Gepack is quite a slippery low-profile robot and the new Thor is heavily armoured with a dangerous weapon.
Looking forward to it!
Almost forgot- what do we know about Infinity, Hive and Tanglefoot? All new to me.
We have seen Infinity at an event in Abber in 2005. If my meory serves me right or it hasnt been modified I think that it is an invertible pushbot. I dont know about the other two or about Das Gepack.
What happened to Wheely Big Cheese? We thought he was a potential winner!!!
John,
Hive is my latest heavyweight creation. A simple rammer powered by a couple of eteks with some claws on the front.
will put an up to date pic on my profile sometime soon
Picture on profile.
Top cover is off as its more interesting :)
gary you should hope you dont come up against kan opener
he likes wheels showing
No Tanto?
Ah, I thought it might be one of yours Gary. I remember you mentioning you were going to build something like this at the UK Champs last year. With that sort of power and your driving it could do well, if you can keep it in the arena with so many flippers about.
What happened to Wheely Big Cheese? We thought he was a potential winner!!!
Dunno .....You could ask J.B.....but he doesnt appear to have logged in since the 25th of June.
John L - theres just too many of these sharp, pointy, flippy, squeezy robots around :)
John W - Heres hoping!
I cant speak for JB but he mentioned to me a while back that he may not personally be at the champs due to other commitments.
woohooo im going to be the flying dutchman. Woody, come and get it if you dare. :D
Woody cant make the UK Champs Jeroen- although if Ka-Pow! is still in shape for Hemel hell probably be there. You can take it as read that Ka-Pow! will be coming staight at you! Youll believe a Hardox claw can fly...
:proud:
Sadly I wont be there ..... John and his missus will be campaigning Ka-Pow!
Im only able ...due to personal circumstances ... to attend local events.
So hope to see you at Hemel with our 3 bots Ka-Pow!( If its still working ) KaPutt! and Thwok!
Hi Everyone, Just another quick intro. We are new to this and our robot is currently under construction. It was going to have a flipper but due to time and my limited knowledge on Pneumatics I have decided to opt for a Spinning weapon. We are a family team based in Bude North Cornwall. My son Charlie (Age 7) has been looking forward to this for months. Sorry I dont yet have a web site up and running but am looking to get something going with just a few photos. We will be camping so we are really looking forward to meeting you all there. We are new to this so our robot may be cannon fodder. Best wishes Chris
Chris, firstly welcome to the community. I look forward to seeing your new machine.
I have decided to opt for a Spinning weapon
If the event is still a grade 3 event as I believe it is you will not be allowed any form of spinning weaponry as the arena will not be able to contain it. See page 6 of the following document,
http://www.fightingrobots.co.uk/documents/event_safety.pdfhttp://www.fightingrobots.co.uk/docu...ent_safety.pdf
I would contact Jonno asap to determine if your weapon will be allowed.
Hi Gary thanks for the info on weapons, I had no idea there were restrictions like this. I just went by the robot build rules. Ok this throws my plans out the window on this one. Anyone have any ideas on weapons that does not really use hydraulics or pneumatics? I dont understand why there would be such restrictions in place for the UK championships? At smaller events perhaps but not this one. Tks Chris
Hi Chris, you can go for an electric axe, or perhaps a lifter.
Chris ....None of the U.K. Arenas currently in use have the capability to contain Top Class Heavyweight Spinners.

Hi Many thanks for all the info, at least I discovered it now rather than arrive at the event with a robot that would not be allowed to use its weapon. Im just having a good hard think what I can do. I presume a Drill would be classed as rotating weapon? Tks Chris
I would look at leos ideas of an axe with an electric motor geared down or a lifting mechanism using a linear actuator.
I dont imagine a drill would be in the same class but as I mentioned previously, get in contact with Jonno. As it is his event he has the final say as to what is allowed to compete in the arena.
Strictly speaking yes, although in the context of modern heavyweights Im afraid a drill is barely a weapon at all. It might be more dangerous to the audience than another machine since if a large drill bit broke under impact, pointy bits of metal could conceivably be thrown up and into the crowd, or at least onto the heads of roboteers.
The main practical problem is the transportation costs of a heavyweight arena with a solid roof strong enough to contain high speed shrapnel thrown up by high energy rotating weapons. Dont be put off though; Scorpian does pretty well with just a scoop, for example.

is this years event being recorded?
Chris, if you would like me to pop in and have a chat about weapons/rules/building, etc I would be willing to. I am in Holsworthy at the weekend (about 13 miles from you) so i could pop over (Im the SW regional FRA rep).
If you want to have a chat please e-mail me and I will send you my mobile number.

So where have half the other HW robots gone ?
Does anyone know how many other new teams/ robots are there other than ourselves?
James D- Team BallistiX
Allan, I am far from new to robotic combat but my bot is new
Perhaps the few that are missing do not want their robots scratched or they cannot afford the time or money to travel to Wales or think the biggest purse for years is not enough.
This is the roboteers championship but you have to be in to win it.
There are more robots going than is in the announced draw. There is more than one competion to enter anyway.
Hiya,
I don€™t get much time to post on here as we are working with Haven on the summer tour, and lots of other stuff going on. Although my spies do keep me informed as to what€™s going on!!!
Chris
Welcome again to the forum, we are certainly looking forward to seeing your robot, no matter what state it is in, just getting a working robot there, even without a weapon will be an achievement.
As pointed out, currently there are no heavyweight arenas in the uk which are up to spec to cope with the current level of spinners. Scorpion is pretty much our most deadly machine here in the UK, and we would ALL agree is just pure scary !!!!
If you wanted a cheap, easy to build weapon in the amount of time, then I would consider an electric lifter.
Head to your local mobility shop, or ebay, and ask if they have any old linear actuators, you can use one of these to power it.
Craig,
Been trying to get hold of you, can you ring me ASAP.
New teams.
As far as I know, there are two new heavyweight teams and 3 new feather weight teams attending this years championship. We€™d all like more, after this years event maybe we need to seriously look into new ways of getting more people interested.
Drop outs
Yes there has been a few drop out at the last minute as there always is, and 1 or 2 which I knew weren€™t going to turn up from the start but gave them the benefit of the doubt by putting them in the list
.
As the competition is now over 3 days and only 6 x 2hour shows, I made a decision to reduce the number to 24 leaving us with reserves, rather than a higher number and then have some not show, and mess up the format.
It€™s a shame that even though I€™ve worked hard for the last 9 months to make sure this even hasn€™t been cancelled as it has come close several times, that we don€™t have more robots coming, however this is the world we live in currently.
Anyway, it does mean that we have the current top 24 robots attending, and the competition is going to be fast and furious, and certainly one not to be missed!!!!
Plus it also means we can all enjoy a no stress, relaxed holiday, away from the pressure, stress, and politics of real life for a while !!!

Chris, Hope the visit was Ok for you last night. I think we got through most things you need to know. It was good to meet nice enthusiastic new people who want to give roboteering a go. All the best and good luck. If you need any more info please let me know.
PS: If anyone out there has a spare LP ram going cheap please let Chris know as he will probably need one before the UK champs.
Cheers,
Dave
