I've got a few questions - is the friday a test day, and the remaining theee days for the competition? As I've currently only got the Friday booked off work. Also, what's the format for the competition? And finally, how big can teams be? How would team mates get into insomnia too? Cheers! :)
I believe the first half of Friday is a test time for testing bots in the arena, getting tech checks done etc, then the competition starts on Friday afternoon through to Sunday (?). Team mates should have been listed on the application form (max 4) but best email James/Grant if you need to add people as they will need names for passes.
Is there usually a place at the venue for us to store our robots overnight? I don't really fancy dragging 50kg of robots, tools and spares back to the hotel.
Just leave the bots and tools on the bench in the pits, that's what we all do
Ain't nobody got time for bringing everything back and forth every day
Since making the application ive got a new team member, is it ok to just bring them along or do i need to register them somehow aswell?
Also robots name has changed to Utopia from the origional entry :)
I'm in the same boat, my original team mate can't make it, so someone else is coming in their place. Also my robot's name has changed to Spectre from the original entry :P
What days are the competition fights? Friday through Monday or is Friday the test day again?
Unfortunately, I've had to pull out of this due to a scheduling conflict that is beyond my control. Gutted at the moment :(
Matt, according to the info on the sign up form, the first half of Friday is a test period, with the competition starting in the afternoon. Doesn't say when it finishes but I would assume all the way through to end of play on Monday.
Any more info about the event yet? Not long to go!
I am hoping to get the info packs emailed out tomorrow :)
Getting excited now! Drivetrains nearing completion too- i don't think i've ever felt so prepared for a competition than this or put so much work into something! hopefully it'll be competitive against most weapon types too with all the different setups it has!
Im trying to resist the urge of calling it Ladforce jamie! trying to have a serious name here :P
haha, I'm in. Someone must have pulled out and I had an email asking me if I was still interested. All paid, Luna-Tic is ready. Not sure if I am!! See you all soon!
Does anyone who's going not have a robot to drive? I was a dunce and missed the "one robot per driver" rule, so (since I have two) I need someone who can drive my new bot for the event, and most people I know are busy on the Friday at least. Anyone available?
I may have someone, there'll be plenty of people about though I'd imagine
I did think I'd just grab someone, but when I emailed James about it, he said I needed names in advance, that's the thing. I have a friend who would be able to for Saturday, Sunday and Monday, but not the Friday. And if the competition starts in earnest on Friday, I'm out of luck. I'm eagerly awaiting the info pack so I can figure this out better.
If you're struggling to get someone, might be worth pulling it out and just competing with one. There'll be plenty of whiteboards, especially on the Sunday, that you'll be able to drive it in and would free up a space for someone on the reserve list.
More a question for James, but anybody else feel free to answer. Luna-tics lift is
a linear actuator, 10mm/s. (No load). Will I be needing a safety bar. Didn't need one for the live events, but best to check than fail the safety test. I fear that more than the spinners!!!
Hey guys, my second robot's driver is sorted now, and I've emailed James. I was heavily considering Jamie's advice of just dropping the second bot out to let someone else in, but since this person didn't manage to get in with their robot, I think this is a good solution. Looking forward to this weekend!
Have the emails gone out yet? Would be useful to know which day I'm competing
I've had nothing so far. Hope they come soon.
Got my info email this evening, should anyone be waiting for theirs.
Got it to. They say only nothing about when competition will be. So will it be friday afternoon or saturday?
The sign up sheet said Friday afternoon, with Friday morning set aside for testing and tech check. James, can you confirm?
Also for those that are new to it and want to load in via the loading doors; head to car park N12 first thing in the morning (they start the process at 8am but you see a small queue building before then). Security will take some details and ask where you're going. Just say you're unloading stuff for the Robot Arena stand/door 20.2 at Insomnia. They'll give you a loading pass valid for fifteen minutes; head to the door (an NEC site map is handy to have), unload your stuff, then pop your cars back round in the main car park. They'll have an allocated one(s) for Insomnia, just ask.
Still have to pay for parking I'm guessing? Plus we can go back and to from our cars throughout the day? If so I'll just bring my HW trolley to ferry stuff.
Friday is for testing, whiteboards and passing tech checks so everyone is ready for first thing on Saturday. The competition is the same as previous championships where there is a league system, 3 battles each and the top x robots go into the knockout stages late sunday and monday with side competitions at the same time.
It can be a LONG walk to and from the car park to hall 20! If you are lucky, car parks N2 and N3 will be open (they weren't for the last year's GSL event). Even then its not a particularly trolley friendly trip. If you have to park in the E car parks like I had to last year, just forget all about trolleys!
For the past events at GSL, James had free parking permits but since this is Insomnia, they may not be available. I also found that if you are leaving the event late, the parking gates are often unattended (again, don't count on it).
We won't be able to be there friday before 10:00, will it still be possible to get our stuff inside?
going from past experiences with the nec probabily not! unless you can get your stuff in through the front door all in cases or something? - they never open the loading doors to let you bring stuff in once the publics in unfortunatly
Yeah you can bring stuff in but it will have to be through the main doors, and probably all in boxes with no sharp edges or tools showing.
May I request the use of someones lipo charger on Friday please!!? Mine is playing up, says the 4S battery's are fully charged when its showing 13/14volts. Ordered a new one, will be delivery Friday (so it says). Thank you in advance.
If anyone's in on the Friday and can lend a hand, I'd appreciate anything at this point - run into some pretty big problems with hw3 and I've not got time to sort it out until literally being at the event
Unsure if it's dropout worthy... But I've mucked it up enough that I might have to -_-
I'll help out whenever I get a spare moment - not sure how much use I'll be though!
I'm a reserve so I should have time - know I'm not the most experienced but am happy to help out with whatever I am able to!
