Quick heads up, I'm gonna need extra drivers for my entry - if anyone's there and fancies driving a minibot let me know on the day? Much appreciated!
Also, the new abomination is in. All will be revealed on the day... :p
Kung Fu Hatchet is in
I'm not driving it this year though
I made a mistake! I have pit slaves, I mean crew! Is there anyway to tack them on to my entry?
An incredibly large coat
Eh? I don't follow...
Hide them under your coat? :p
I'm sure it's easily amendable though, best bet is emailing Grant or James directly
As in hide them under your coat. As long as your pit slaves are kept chained up under your table, everything will be find.
Seriously tho, it's cool to bring along 2 'adults' to fetch and carry refreshments and tools? Excellent.
Also, can't believe the coat reference went over my head. I have shamed my family.
Only if you're willing to share your pit slaves among the other roboteers for additional menial tasks ;)
Drumroll II now all paid up and ready to....sound horrible as the drum is warped and doesn't spin freely. Don't think this'll be its finest champs, though hopefully not as bad as 2011!
Inb4 champion
Inb4 finishing runner up to you :p
Clank is in :)
Any idea when the draw will be done? Excited to find out who'll be failing to break Ricochet this time ;)
I just noticed that the Gadget show map is very different from the http://www.gadgetshowlive.net/floorplanlast two years. Now in Halls 2 and 3 which are on the other side of the NEC and far away from the N2 carpark we used last year. The West car park is the closest but I'm betting it is going to fill up fast.
Definitely some downsizing going on! Wonder if we'll be allowed to take the bots over to the Big Toy Track too
You mean invade the big toy track, right? Who's gonna argue with 40 armed & dangerous bots?
Bending the rules (for a good cause):
How do people feel about Mr Mangle having his on-board camera if it puts him 120 grams over weight? I am happy to take it off all together if RoboChallenge won't allow it, or just for individual matches if competitors don't like it. On the other hand, we would all miss out on exciting video like this: http://www.nswrfc.org/Nick/melee.mp4
Let me know what your opinion is...
Personally, I say that provided the robot weighs in weight without the camera - and the camera itself isn't more than 1% of the weight limit (136g) - then I personally havnt got a problem fighting it
I say, slap it on makes no difference to me. Great fighting films are worth it
Tether it to your removable link, they're not counted in the weight. Or if your removable link weighs 120g, then you're sorted :)
To be fair, 120g isn't going to do that much, and you're not using it for any competition-based gain, rather do some cool camera work - I'd have no issues!
Of course the final decision lies with Robochallenge but I certainly wouldn't have a problem
Amazing in fight action is worth any amount of weight in my opinion
No problem Adam, let me just strap my 3kg camera onto Drumroll ;)
In my opinion absolutely not. You want a camera on your robot? You should adhere to the same rules as all the rest of us and make sure it fits in weight.
Jamie it won't help you unless it's to help balance your drum out :)
Harsh but fair. Mr Mangle weighs in at 13.46Kg and the camera was only added for the last event, long after the weight was finalised. Its a small GoPro knock-off, not exactly an advantage in a bot fight. Like I said, I'm happy to take it off is the consensus goes against it.
I don't have an issue with it, as long as you're okay with it becoming a target! :)
Of course, completely up to the EO/FRA to say yay or nay.
Its a really cheap camera - as long as I can salvage the SD card, I'm fine with it getting written off.
If the EOs are happy with it, it then comes down to if the competitors you are fighting are happy with it.
Personally, while I'd love to see the footage, I would be against it if it puts you overweight. Even though there would be no advantage gained by you, if I discovered that, say, a flipper was carrying 120g of extra gas when fighting against me, I wouldn't be happy. It has got to be a level playing field for everyone due to the nature of it being a world championship. Besides, I don't imagine footage of the pit tyre for two minutes will be particularly riveting
That said, I'll have Onyx there for whiteboards so if for some reason you're knocked out earlier, I'd be happy to do some whiteboards to get some footage.
Would it help to think of the camera as 120G of public service? Its just dead weight the bot has to haul around and doesn't give me any advantage like extra gas or a bigger motor would.
You can't have been watching my build thread - I added a cunning anti-tyre device so this year I just have to avoid the pit like everyone else.
I've just caught up on your build thread, a cunning plan indeed! Just as long as the tyre doesn't get caught under the string now :P
My issue is more to do with the fact that people get turned back for being a single gram overweight even if it's just a single bolt making the difference. If you can make a case that the camera should be exempt because it gives no advantage I can make the same case about the paint on a robot for example. If we say, allowed for the 2% other weight classes get then fine, but if it's only one robot being given special treatment then I can't say I'd be happy with it. Either everyone gets extra weight or nobody does.
My personal view is that the weight limit is the limit. If you want a camera then that is great but it needs to be within the weight limit.
Given the HW's are meant to be 100kg and thanks to the 2% tolerance are all built to 102kg, surely a 120g camera which is less than 1% of a FW isn't a major issue.
While I do agree that 'the weight limit is the weight limit', I also really want to see more of what happens in the area close up and to get a bots eye giew which is something rarely seen.
If it was a 1v1 against me I would let him use it. It would be down to James and Grant, and then down to the roboteers in each fight to say officially but given how great the on board footage has been from other robots I think we need to get more robots fitted with cameras.
 All bots should have stereo cameras and the drivers fitted with VR goggles - there's a reason that FPV drone racing is getting so popular!
Yeah, the DRL stuff is amazing. Its a shame they are 'Reality'ing it and making it all about the drivers grudges and not the sport itself.
So true! Formularistic reality TV needs to die. Given how cheap and small GoPro type cameras have gotten, its surprising the Battlebots didn't use a few - it would have been easy to bolt one on to Nightmare and some of the other bots
Now I'm wondering about making a removable link in the form of a 4mm Hardox top plate which completes the circuit when it is put in place. As long as it was held down by some sort of clasp or something so no tools were needed it sounds perfectly within the rules.
Or you could make a snap-in battery like a drill pack - that would save me 650 grams in one hit.
