As PJ said, it's not a full event/competition as such and it's the first time we have put this on.
However, we have decided to do this to help with people such as yourself swanny, who are getting into robot's and might need a few idea's and abit of help along the way. We have things for everyone to learn something from, and we hope that some of these seminar's will open peoples minds to designing and building more reliable and varied machines. The arena will be open for fights/testing etc at times on Saturday and all day Sunday. It would be great to see you there!
We can't make it as we will be going to Belgium next weekend to fight at the DRG Event.Hope all goes well and I am looking forward to seeing the presentations when they are uploaded.
Clive
I'll be happy to turn up if i can :/ sseeing
ian lewis would be class
Long shot but does anyone have any of the old cassettes for video recorders around?
I hired a professional HD camcorder from Uni only to find its got no tape in in!
If anyone could bring along a DVCAM marked cassette that would be amazing, otherwise standard HDV or DV tapes are great to!
I will be bringing my mac so I can get the video off anyway so you can have the tape back at the end.
Hope today goes well guys...bit gutted I am missing today but work dictates. Will be there tomorrow around 10 ish with Chuck no worries.
I hope plenty support the event as I think its great what your doing.
Likewise, would've loved to have been there but Middle Earth came calling 8)
Looking forward to seeing all the videos.
also gutted missing event working nights this weekend boo
looks great guys sorry to have missed it
Great event today guys, gave me a few ideas and has really given me the drive back to get on with robots again, will be in the shed tomorrow doing a bit of fabrication
A great first day, plenty of information that will definitely be helpful in the future! Particularly the LiPo talk, I now feel more confident using them in my robots after seeing Grant failing to set one on fire despite puncturing it with a nail and shorting it out! Also got to see Ian Lewis and Razer for the first time (nerdgasm!). Was also useful to see how Project X held up against 720, scoops got totalled, but the robot still worked afterwards, although the body got bent. Got it driving again, it now drives inverted! Looking forward for more fighting today!
Aaargh, just caught some of the pics Alex got up on Facebook and I'm super-extra gutted I couldn't go. :(
Any chance of seeing a list of who won what please?
Guys....a cracking day thanks. Your workshop still just isnt quite as good as my shed. Both me and Jason just loved your gadgets and has given us both massive inspiration. :)
is there a youtube video or facebook thing to show the seminars or anything from the day
im looking forward to all the pics and videos!
a realy good get together and those who didnt go missed out! Fought little spinner and won - only running at quarter power thou but the high light of the weekend for me was taking on the uk champion with TS2 and winning! One of the most nerve wrecking and by far the best fight ive had in the 4 years ive been doing this. Sure there will be a video up soon, all credit to nst too- that robot hits hard, even thou ts2 was still running it had split my 22mm nylon bulkead clean in 2. Realy looking forward to the champs now!
Wow what a weekend!
Firstly can I say thank you very much to every one who cameto the Robo Challenge Open Day and I certainly hope you all enjoyed the event. Saturday was fantastic with brilliant talks, all of which were very enlightening.
Sam Smith gave us a fantastic insight into every stage of reliability when building a spinner. Really well presented and lots of great little tips. We can see why NST is such a good machine.
Kane Aston produce a great talk on pneumatics including a description of all the parts along with some handy tips he uses for Behemoth in making your system leak free.
Andy from Optifuel put on a super talk about Lithium batteries and really cleared the air with facts about the battery technology and their safety. We then saw what happens to lipos on the discharge rig and also what happens when Lipos are shorted or punctured. Very enlightening.
Ian Lewis gave us a fantastic insight into creating an inspiring machine. His insights into how team Razer thought about Robot Wars and how they tackled their challenges was very personal and really helped open our eyes to creating machines that will fulfill our own goal and inspire audiences. A really nice way to complete our 4 sessions.
Thank you very much to Sam, Kane, Andy, Grant & Ian for giving us their time and some really great knowledge. All the sessions were recorded and will be put online soon. We wrapped the day up with the 2012 FRA Awards presented by Ian Lewis. We will be publishing the winners very soon :)
Sunday was also a great day which saw some awesome battles, NST v TS2 would have made a perfect final in a UK champs! Predator was given its first full test and appeared to work perfectly... until the head motor and speedo blew :(
Overall it was a great weekend and we are already planning next years event with more talks for complete beginners and experts so I look forward to seeing you all next year!
The Robo Challenge team
Attended on the sunday - good to meet up with a few old faces ive not seen for about 7 years! Met some new people (to me at least) all very friendly and inspiring.
Thanks to everyone - im sure ill be seeing you all again later in the year, hopefully with something to show you.
Was great to meet you. Looking forward to seeing what you build!
Has anyone got a video of Predator?
Great event guys, looking forward to seeing those videos Jarvis/Kane!
I only took a few random ones which I'll stick on my YouTube.
I think Kane took some footage of Predator on his bridge cam but there was a go-pro in the corner but not sure if it was on.
Missed out :(
Spotted this on Mouldy's YouTube:

Does that mean TS2 is the No.1 featherweight in the country now?
Calum wishes :lol:Quote:

A big thanks to the Robo-challenge guys for putting on this great event. I really enjoyed the relaxed weekend catching up with teams, watching the workshops and some testing/battle.
Congratulations to the award winning teams, especially team Big nipper who received a few awards :)
NST definitely made the most of having the full arena set up and got some good spinner testing in. I was very pleased with a couple of mods, including the new high power solid state relay and new improved motor/gearbox unit.
Great battle on the Sunday evening with TS2, look forward to seeing the video of that one. Respect to Calum for challenging NST to a full combat battle when not in a competition. Both machines made some good impacts and kept on going. Hope it doesn't take too much fixing :P.
Gutted I just missed Predator spinning up, has anyone got a video? Hope you get the brushless all sorted out soon enough James
That battle was crazy! Your solid state relay looked seriously good. Was it warm after that battle with the constant pounding?
Stripped e motor down and it appears the windings came loose to the front plate, they rotated and shorted. Has anyone seen this happen before?
Video off my phone of the fight, did a bit of super cool editing too :)

the hit 34 seconds in gave me the real damage, split my left bulkhead in half and damaged the pully on the beater then part of the hardox armour under the robot near a wheel broke free which made it hard to drive in a straight line cause it was dragging on the floor - if NST didn't fly otta I would have probabily lost lol
be good to have a rematch at the champs
You running it on a higher voltage now Calum? It seems a lot faster than at the champs and you were getting some gyro dancing too :)
The beater's looking really good as well; I need to get a front hardox wedge like yours made for Drumroll.
I cant believe you are getting that off a single S900! I guess I need more mass behind my disc, its only 1.4Kg. How much does your beater weigh?
A few videos from Jarvis:

Thanks James, I was too lazy to take the lid off after the battle to check, but the SSR would have stayed cold. It is so overrated for that set up that even if I pretty much 'melted' the motor, battery and wires the SSR would barely get warm.
That's a very unlucky motor failure!
Calum, yes would defo be up for a re-match.
Thanks for the videos guys, did anyone catch the NST attacking the wood pieces and chassis?
Some great videos there!
Come on guys the awards were handed out on saturday, who won what please?
jamie-it was on grants lipo thats why it was so much better lol, so much more power! think i no what any christmas money i get is going on now!- technically ive owned a lipo since april time but i just never recieved it....-Then need new drive motors and nylon for the chassis too,
oh and the beater weighs 3.5 kgs and atm altogether it weighed under 13 kg and thats with heavier nimhs so shud be easy to get a self righter in there i hope
And sam i did, ill upload it friday once the sky mans installed the internet at my house lol
What are you using for drive Calum? Its pretty nippy!
Hi Clive, Kane is just editing the video and I believe hopes to have it up later today.
it was running off 18v drills there overvolted to something like 22v but im not keeping them for the next one as the motors came loose a few times from the large impacts the robot recieved throughout the day so at the champs i wouldn't wana risk it.
TS2 performed really well, seemed like a totally different machine from the champs. Are you going to enter it next year or are you having a rebuild? Seem a shame to not use it now it works so well.
