Dave, any idea when the disc is coming my way? :D
Just waiting for the centre of the disc to come back from being painted- then i want to trial test it on the chassis before i send it off as the bottom of the disc might run abit to close to the front wheels.. if it runs ok then ill get it sent of to you- hopefully next week some time :)
A little update..
Just ordered a new hyperion 6S 35c lipo- there ment to be quite good and are the latest out so hopefully they will do the job. reduced pack size from 5000mah down to 3300mah- 5amp was way OTT for what i was pulling, especialy on the higher voltage.
So 360 is going from 14.8v upto 22.2v meaning a theoretical increase from 4709RPM upto a theoretical speed of 7063RPM.. in reality its probably half that though so i wouldnt worry to much :twisted:
Also had to order a new balancer- so my old thunderpower 2-4s balancer is up for grabs if anyone wants it?
Sorted the new selfwrighting gears and made a new arm from a piece of ti that i heated up and bent into shape instead of the weak ali tube which broke.

Also im fearing the weight limit might finaly be getting closer, so ive ordered some carbon fibre sheet from carbonmods to replace some of the aluminium bits.
Could do with ordering some new brushless esc's but im sick of spending money on speed controllers so ill order them next week or somthing when im feeling enthusiastic..
lookin cool, you'll be near unbeatable with your self righter working
jus need to sort out a way to get back into the arena:P
keep us updated:)
Toms finnished the spiral. looks cool;

paint job looks good, i wonna see what it looks like while spinning so take a video :)
Wont be spinning for a week or two yet atleast. Just ordered myself two new ESC's from America for it, Im told there the best going and they actually can be repaired when i blow them up... My 19th and 20th esc.. and they cost 666dollar's together... getting bored of this now if they dont work i quit and im getting a magmotor. :uhoh:
On the upside though, they have ajustable current limiting, motor timing settings and all sorts of other stuff built in and are quite lightweight for a 160a esc. (120a overall more then any esc ive used before in 360) so fingures crossed. http://www.castlecreations.com/products ... ce_hv.html
Also Dave Gambles got my H5's now so he will be looking at those in the next few weeks for me to get my selfwrighter all done.
And Kenny should be machining my new rear axles within the next day or two after tiny toon broke one of my old ones.
your feather costs more than 20 of my cars...
Yeah ive been trying to save for a nissan s14a for about a year, keep spending money trying to get this thing reliable first though. Ah well.
Alex says oops sorry about the axle Dave,and he will send you his pocket money. :lol: :lol:
But he is looking forward to fighting you again asap. :proud: and that disc would look even better with black and white on it. :lol:
Alex is the only person to damage 360 :) He blew up one of my speed controllers aswell with 44toon :)
Could be worse, it could have been Stagefright :rofl:
You would never have lived that down. :lol:
To compensate for the bigger lipo pack and heavier disc im having to save weight elsewere, So ive decided to do away with some aluminium parts and replace them with carbon fibre- The pics dont do it justice but it looks nice up close..

Bloody hell, seeing that new disc rim in relation to the robot really makes it look insane! Can't wait to see it used in anger at the next comp 8)
The cf looks nice too :)
Well i got the disc on.. ish
Here it is
http://i685.photobucket.com/albums/v...s/bcccbe0b.jpg
http://i685.photobucket.com/albums/v...s/59ff6b7f.jpg
Only problem is that the disc is now so thick that ir rubs ontop of the wheels, only on the edges by about 0.5mm, so im going to turn the width of the front wheels down abit so they sit up inside the new rim, They were always 5mm wider then the rears anyhow and ill loose abit of weight by doing it. Picture of the wheels rubbing the disc below;

Also Kenny (ALK Engineering) has machined me up some new rear axles from P20 (same material as the disc) which should be abit stronger then the old titanium ones which snaped due to a little white and black pushy robot :lol:

Ian- ill get the disk sent off to you tomorow for nitride coating :wink:
Guess we will have to try and hit just a little bit harder next time then Dave :lol:
Looking very nice cant wait to see it in the arena again.
looks amazing:)
have to say when i heard you were having a candy red spiral i wasnt sure how good it would look compared to hypno-disc but its ended up looking great
Dave, I have to say that that is looking unbelievably amazing now! Quite right that it got the best engineered award :)
Have you put the magnet back in? As I'm assuming the gyro forces will be event greater now with the heavier disc. Or are you just going to let it continue boogie-ing for the time being?
Not sure jamie, the magnet ive got is way OTT for the drive motors- it slows it down alot. I might try it with one half the size. But you are right with the exstra disk weight and speed it is probably going to be stupidly crazy to drive now... Although i kinda like it, it looks cool. Plus magnets weigh quite alot... I think ill just see how much the complete robot weighs when its back together and how crazy it is to drive then decide :evil:
It's gorgeous!
That looks amazing :) if rather scary, lol.
It's...beautiful... :cry:
Let's just hope it performs as well as it looks, that's all I can say. :)
Ian- the disc has been posted, you should receive it Monday.
Weighed 360 and without the link mount (which isn't even built yet), the two RX's and the BEC and it should come out to 13.55kg. I spent a few hours at priory castor's with grant yesterday and managed to loose 40g from turning the wheels down and milling a pocket in the sabertooth mount.
Hopefully going to grange square tomorrow with Ed to Finnish the new battery box for the bigger lipo and mill a bit of weight out of the disc gearbox assembly. Ideally ill get about 150g out of it... Its weird being close to the weight limit... i don't think i like not being able to upgrade without worrying to much. I'm going to try and aim for 13.4kg all in so i've got 200g to play about with magnets in the future...Its mad how 10g here and there soon adds up.
Hi Dave,
The disc turned up today. I did mean to send you a message but due to having to take the wife up the hospital to visit her mum it's been hard to get near the computer. The question now being how much in ransom should I ask to return it? :twisted: Okay in all seriousness, I will be putting it in for nitriding on Monday so i should be sending it back to you on Friday. I will take some photo's of the process for the build diary.
Ian.
Ian i've read that nitriding metal can add up to 10% of its original weight.Hope that you warned Dave about this seeing as weight is now an issue to him. :shock:
Jesus that was fast! I only posted it yesterday evening at about 4! Great stuff ian, postage came to just under £22, so send me a paypal request if you use it and I'll get the return funds sent to you. I think you might of dug yourself a hole offering to do this lol I got a feeling a few people will be asking you for favours soon :)
Just 10% that's, very conservative Clive. :) Let's face it, all those nitrogen molecules going into the surface must do something to the weight. :)
Got me worried for a second then clive! :sad:
Did abit more work today, took some weight out of the billet disc axle;
http://i685.photobucket.com/albums/v...s/360bits3.jpg
Made a link mount thats supported by the front plate of the selfwrighter gearbox ;
http://i685.photobucket.com/albums/v...s/360bits2.jpg
Also did some work on the new battery box, did the side plates, abit bigger then the old ones, but ed milled a pocket in the middle of them for me which lost 14grams from them compaired to the old ones;
http://i685.photobucket.com/albums/v...s/360bits1.jpg
:lol: :lol:
A quick update for anyone interested.
360's disc loaded in the furnace ready for nitriding.
http://www.weirdalice.co.uk/360%20007a.jpg
And this is where it's now being cooked for the next 2 days.
http://www.weirdalice.co.uk/360%20009a.jpg
cool, what kind of temperature does it get heated to?
515 deg. C for 42 hours in a cracked ammonia atmosphere.
Nice one ian. Does it get quenched in acid after that? Hope it doesn't get to hot and come out as a big expensive melted lump lol
No, it's already had the acid dip. It helps to activate the surface to make the nitriding better.
Does it get quenched in oil then?
No, it doesn't get quenched at all. It hardens through a reaction of the nitrogen with the alloys in the steel, which is why only certain steels work. At the end of the 42 hours the middle bit of the funace gets taken out and left to cool in a protective atmosphere. This normally takes between 6-8 hours.
You'll probably have a bit of polishing to do after dave :proud: It took weeks for us to clean ploughbot's and venoms armour and claw once they were nitrided.
Battery box modded and pulley repaired, ready for collection.
Hi ed i poped round after work n got the bits of your brother, The thread in the pulley is nakard at the bottom were the grub screw needs its strength. Hopefully it will be ok if i can find a longer grub screw. Thanks :)
