The Roaring Donkey mini-tournament
The semi finals are here...well, one of them is anyway. Ill get the other one done later.
The 6isc (6isk?) vs. Envy
ROBOTEERS, STAND BY
Booth 1, left hand side: Shane Swan, and a man in a penguin outfit
Booth 2, right hand side: Frank Goacher

Envy is immediately off, going for the box rush to stop The 6isc from spinning up, but The 6isc saw it coming and dodges the attack rather nicely, moving up towards the top of the arena. Envy gives chase, but The 6iscs weapon is spun up now, and although Envy is able to get underneath one of its opponents wheel pods, the disc makes contact with the side as it does so!
CRASH! And as Envy goes flying, it knocks its aggressor upwards as well! Both machines land, Envy is upside down though...no real problem, as it somersaults back on to its wheels in a cloud of CO2 and speeds away from the incoming 6isc. The robots now square off, Envy trying to manuver around the side of The 6isc, while Frank tries to keep his machines weapon facing the opponent. Theyre moving in some sort of waltz, it would seem...but then The 6isc breaks the deadlock and goes all out at Envy!
CRASH! The 6isc is flung off the wedge of Envy by the force of that hit, which appears to have caused a long dent in Envys flipper arm. Envy is now on the attack though, and drives in under The 6isc!
CRASH! And just like before, the robots are torn away from each other, Envys front now looking rather scarred. Shane continues on the offensive though, coming around and ramming into The 6isc before it can spin up again...slamming it against the top arena wall! The 6isc attempts to drive off the top of Envy, but it only has one set of wheels in contact with the ground, and can do little more than reposition itself on the wedge, before...
FLIP! And the nose of Envy bounces up! It comes down though, and the flipper appears to have done its work, as The 6isc is propped on the angle grinder! One wheel pod is hanging over the arena entrance area, and it would only take a little nudge to send it into oblivion. Envy backs off...Shane fires the flipper again...and comes in to oblige with a tap to The 6isc with the extended weapon, and Frank sets his transmitter down as his robot slides off across the scenery.
CEASE
After a short but sweet battle, Shane Swan and Envy are through to the tournament final!

The Roaring Donkey mini-tournament
I did not expect that, seriously. :proud:
Eh, Macduff the 2nd was made to survive strong spinners, so well see if I make it past Resonance, but Envy is looking pretty good at the moment...
-
The Roaring Donkey mini-tournament
i didnt think i would get through that round either but you made it sound like it was classic envy at work. it could almost have been a live battle. unlucky frank. looking forward to see who will be in the final too.
-
The Roaring Donkey mini-tournament
sorry kody but i fancy resonance. and if it is can i borrow your kitchen sink please frank.
-
The Roaring Donkey mini-tournament
Well we shall see. :proud:
-
The Roaring Donkey mini-tournament
You may certainly borrow the kitchen sink, but if you managed to get rid of The 6isc, you can beat Resonance... Theyre more of less the same design:)

Heres the other semi final...
Macduff The Second vs. Resonance
ROBOTEERS, STAND BY
Booth 1, left hand side: Kody Kunz
Booth 2, right hand side: Aaron Knight

And in very similar fashion to the last fight, the robot on the left goes for the box rush. Resonance turns away from the attack, and Macduff nearly hits the arena wall as it tries to reverse away. Resonance is backing off, trying to get its drum spinning to a reasonable speed, as Macduff comes in, and lines up a ram...Resonance moves forward to try and hit the sides, but Macduff turns, and goes in!
CRASH! And Macduff bounces backwards, not quite thrown away by the energy, but sporting a slightly bent spike...it tries to keep the initiative though, as Resonance tries to manuver around the side. Macduff turns, and comes in again with the spike!
CRASH! Macduff does go flying this time, but lands on its rounded back and comes down on its tracks! Resonance turns away, Aaron trying to buy some spin up time. Macduff drives over the flame grid, turning around to come in on the attack, but that spike is looking rather bent now - its almost sticking in the air. Macduff drives in, residual flames blazing behind it*, as Resonance turns to keep its weapon facing the opponent. Macduff thinks about ramming, Resonance moving in with the drum at full speed, but it doesnt anticipate Macduff well enough, as it comes in on the side!
CRASH! And somehow, Resonance got a drum hit in, and a rip has now appeared in Macduffs side...it hasnt stopped the charge much though, as it comes in again, and goes underneath the drum with the wedge! Resonance isnt spinning any longer, the spike shaft of Macduff stopping the teeth from moving, and it is now being pushed into the arena walls by the Scottish rambot. Macduff turns towards the pit, but in the process manages to drop Resonance, which turns away...or its turning away slowly, as one of the wedgelets protecting the wheels is stuck underneath the left hand side of the robot, severely impeding its movement, and Macduff sees this and rams again! The drum is spinning, somewhat, but it doesnt seem to have much effect on Macduff, just knocking it backwards slightly, as Resonance inexorably is driven towards the pit...Macduff turns, slowly, attempting to line itself up to drop Resonance in the pit, and pushes. Aaron is holding his controls up in desperation, but his robots drum is only knocking one of the edges of Macduff a bit, until one of its wheel pods slides down onto the edge of the pit...
CRASH! What happened there? Macduffs front skirt is hanging by a thread - the hinges must have been hit by the weapon as it went down! Kody looks briefly alarmed, but then Resonance, jolted slightly backwards by the impact, slides along the edge of the pit slightly before tipping down in a pall of smoke. Aaron looks puzzled, partially relieved that its all over, while Kody smiles to himself in his control booth.
CEASE
Its not really a good day for spinning weapons - Macduff The Second and Kody Kunz go through to the final!

Comments, predictions, thoughts? I especially want the last one as Im not sure how well Im doing the battles with spinners in, as its not a subject Im really knowledgable about.
*Also, what was it on TV with the little residual bits of flame following robots for a few seconds after they drove over the flame jets? Is it some inherent flammability of robots, or a property of fire?

The Roaring Donkey mini-tournament
Hah. I had a sixth sense as soon as I saw the design that a Disc version would face it sooner rather than later.
As stated we have similar designs, but I have a few key advantages.
1) As always when I face a fellow spinner with no stated power output, I ran it through the KJ checker and came up with some interesting results... As Aaron hasnt given size stats for the teeth I cant be 100% certain, but Resonance clocks in at a whopping... 20-0dd KJs. I cant find a way of getting it anywhere close to 30 without also putting it overweight. Power advantage: Me.
2) Assuming were not making gung-ho tactics, we cant collide head on, because wed also be going into each others weapons, so to play it safe wed both have to go for side attacks. Ive got those spikes to get in the way, and even if he does get past them, the outer wheel hubs are totally sacrificial, and theyre nicely curved to deflect attacks better. He has much smaller spikes, thinner armour which is also flatter. Armour advantage: Me.
Basically, my tactics are to strike his sides and try to kill his drive chain. If I cant get a good shot in at him, just go in gung-ho and take advantage of my two advantages. Strike that drum and try to take those teeth off.

frank can ypu please point me to a picture of the 6isc please :)

Technically, this is The Disc 5, but theyre pretty much identical in shape:proud:
http://i211.photobucket.com/albums/bb207/Pcbore/TheDisc.pnghttp://i211.photobucket.com/albums/b...re/TheDisc.png
Because of my uh... Brilliant paint skills, I cant say its anything like the exact dimensions, but its close enough. The proper dimensions are in the stats, so between those and the picture you can get a good idea of what it is.
-
The Roaring Donkey mini-tournament
Franks comments are true, but hold no real water in this fight. Ive got wedges, more drive speed, more pushing power, more tooth edge to hit with and more torque behind my weapon. Neither of us have the power to damage the others hardox armour (I can damage his titanium bits though), so he has no armour advantage, or power advantage...
Tactics are to go head to head with 6isc. Ill be able to wedge him at his wheels or near those domes and push him into the wall. If I can get to the sides, Ill use those spikes to flip him. Keep attacking them and damage the dome bits as much as possible. It might not cause hindering damage, but damage is damage and thats what the judges care about. Use the more powerful drive on Resonance to give 6isc no space. Just keep ramming, pushing, and attacking like crazy.
Oh its on like donkey kong! :proud:
-
The Roaring Donkey mini-tournament
Youre not damaging those Titanium bits because you cant reach them. Those tiny little wedges wont help, theyll take the front two wheels off the ground, but the rear two wheels will just let me reverse away, and if I turn as I reverse you have to guess which way Im going if you want to stay on the attack.
quote:
Oh its on like donkey kong!
NES version or SNES versions? Im assuming youre not bringing up the disgrace that was the N64 version.
-
The Roaring Donkey mini-tournament
You can reverse at full speed Frank and Ill still be pushing you. My Speed Your Speed... You can turn, but you also 200mm wider then me, which means youll turn slower as well.
The deciding factor of this battle will be that my render is just so much better then yours
SNES version of course!!! N64 version was just Banjo Kazooie with the DK characters chucked into it...
-
The Roaring Donkey mini-tournament
And the fact that Im 200 mm wider means you probably cant get the wedges properly under both domes at once, which means the best you can do is push me in a circle.
The deciding factor of our lives is I have better things to do than work on proper renders:wink:
At least we can agree on one thing. N64 Donkey Kong SNES Donkey Kong.
-
The Roaring Donkey mini-tournament
Oh wow. I didnt actually think Id beat Resonance. Kudos to Joey, and commiserations to Aaron.
Play-off
Resonance vs. The 6isc
Id go with The 6isc to win here.
FINAL
Macduff the 2nd vs. Envy
Ah, Mr. Swan, we meet at last. :proud: Ive seen videos of Envy, and its one hell of a machine (not to mention that I really like it :proud:), so this isnt going to be easy by a long shot. Thus I will not take Envy lightly. I am tempted to use Set-up 3, which is the lowered spikes, so I can get under Envys front easier, but the fact remains that if he flips me, then Im pretty much fodder as the spikes wont work inverted, and Im not taking any chances. So, I will go with the set-up I had with the match with Rupture, which is Set-up 4 (the front skirt), meaning I can use the skirt if I get flipped.
Basically using this set-up I will try to get under Envy from anywhere I can, preferably the sides or the rear but if I get him from the front that wont be too bad. My skirts should help against that flipper of Envys, but even so, I wont let him get to my sides or rear without a fight. Will try to outmanoeuvre Envy and leave him open to an attack (which is hard, I know :proud:). then, once Ive wedged Envy, thanks to the design of the front of Macduff, he shouldnt be able ride off of it, and then...PIT!!!
Summary: Face Envy with front skirt, ram, outmanoeuvre, wedge him onto the skirt, pit pit pit! Avoid leaving sides and especially the rear vulnerable.
Good luck Shane. :)

Two very similar robots here, and the battle starts slowly, both machines spinning up their weapons, before The 6isc makes the first move, moving down towards the far end of the arena as it lines itself up for a good hit on Resonance. Resonance moves forwards, turning to keep its weapon facing the opponent, and comes in, speeding up for a charge...The 6isc moves out of the way, but Resonance turns in, and The 6isc inadvertently drives straight into the drum!
CRASH! And its Resonance who goes flying! The 6isc jolts backwards as well, but its weapon appears to have had the upper hand in that particular collision...Resonance lands, not too shaken, and begins to spin up again, as The 6isc moves around, trying to get at the sides...Resonance is attempting to stop that, and the robots are moving in a slow waltz, it would appear. The 6isc tries to dummy Resonance...Resonance goes in, but The 6isc turns and goes for the wheel pod!
CRASH! Amidst the sparks, something goes flying - Resonance has lost one of its wedges again! The wedge is now on the floor, while the springs holding it in are poking in something of a mess out of the wheel area - but The 6isc is sporting a huge dent in its wheel covers as well - Resonance managed to get its weapon in too! The robots approach each other tentatively again...Resonance comes in...The 6isc backs off briefly...and turns into the wheel cover again!
CRASH! Resonance goes over again! It lands on the flame grid, which obligingly flares up as it drives away. The 6isc drives forward again, Frank wanting to get at Resonances wheels, but it moves too late, and Resonance comes straight in...theres a moment when nothing happens, the teeth on the weapons not being able to catch each other, but then...
CRASH! Both machines go flying, but Resonance more impressively - Aaron is getting a lot of Air Miles today, it would seem. Resonances weapon doesnt have enough energy to be the winner of a weapon-to-weapon hit...The 6isc is spinning up again, and Resonance is as well...but its shaking! The weapon slows down somewhat, and one of the teeth has been broken by that previous hit - it cant spin at high speed without losing balance, and The 6isc seems to know this, as it goes straight in!
CRASH! That drum isnt spinning any more, and Resonance is now up against the wall, stuck between a rock and a hard place. The 6isc comes in, and turns slightly to get a good shot in...
CRASH! Another wedgelet goes flying! Resonance isnt doing too well here...The 6isc backs away, and Resonance tries to get away, but it doesnt seem to be mobile on the right hand side, its just moving in circles now. The weapon is spinning, but not very well, and The 6isc waits its moment...Resonance turns, but in doing so goes broadside on...and The 6isc comes in...
CRASH! Resonance bounces up, but its wheel cover has come loose! One side of it is hanging down, scraping the floor, and Resonance cant manage anything more than twitchy movements from its left side...
CRASH! The 6isc isnt showing any mercy here...and Resonance has stopped! The left hand drive chain has broken and been ripped off by that hit, and is lying uselessly on the floor now!
CRASH! And the wheel at the front has come off...theres only one winner here, and its definitely not Resonance. Aaron leans against the Lexan of his booth and stares despondently at his machine as he sets his controls down.
CEASE
CRASH! The wheel guard on that side has completely come away now - you can see all the mechanical workings inside Resonance. It appears as if someone told Frank to stop though, finally, as The 6iscs weapon is spinning down.
Well, it was more one sided than it seemed there, really - Frank Goacher and The 6isc are the third place winners!

The Roaring Donkey mini-tournament
kodster and macduff the second.....
with a wedge setup depending on the angle of the wedge envy can reverse off with the rear being about 3 or 4 inch off the ground. tho macduff will have to get a good line for the pit. i will ofcourse bear this in mind and let kody bring the fight to envy. i believe i am a better driver than kody and monouvering into a position to oota shouldnt be too much of a problem. still as always wont get complacent and think its an easy one for envy although it looks like it is. envys wedge is zero mm as is macduff2nd so it might be 50 50 head to head. still has to line me up to the pit tho and will be watching carefully and making his life to do it difficult. 1 oppertunity for envy will be all it will need :)
-

Well considering the only robots Ive REALLY driven before are R/C cars and Lego robots... :proud:
That may change soon with my new featherweight. :)
-
The Roaring Donkey mini-tournament
I see a problem with your plan Shane. :proud:
with a wedge setup depending on the angle of the wedge envy can reverse off with the rear being about 3 or 4 inch off the ground
Too bad that once I wedge you, youll be stuck on the skirt once your wheel goes over the top of it. :proud: Then I can turn around all I wish (though not recklessly) and pit you, as your wheel will still be caught over the skirt. :proud: The skirt is bolted at the top corners, just so you know, so it wont come off easily.
I however am just looking for a good fight. :)

i cant see how envys wheels will be entirely off the floor. this means that if what you say is right then the entire body of envy will have to be off the floor. i cant get in my head how you can steer without envy sliding off either way. its a difficult manover to make with a robot on envys wedge. i will see what you mean with a pic tho. still kodster envy will reign supreme cos i will simply out drive you :)

And so, the grand final begins. Almost immediately, both robots come out of the starting points, Macduff, slightly the faster, turning to get around the side of Envy, as Envy turns to keep its front facing Macduff. Envy comes in, trying to get around the side of Macduff, who turns to try and thwart the manuver, but Envy darts to the side, getting around the slowly turning Macduff, and wedges underneath, powering it towards the arena wall!
FLIP! And...almost over so quickly! Macduff just caught on the wall and came down, albeit landing on its back. Kody backs off from the approaching Envy, before coming in...and ramming...and getting underneath Envy! Shane tries to drive off, but Envys wheels are stuck over the top of the skirt, Macduff is already pushing Envy towards the bottom right corner...slamming Envy into the wall! Its jolted, but manages to get off the skirt now though, and reverses up, over the flame pit, before driving through the fire into Macduff!
FLIP! Macduff gets stacked against the arena side...the tracks can get some grip though, and it trundles along the wall before coming down on its back, and moving away, up towards the top of the arena with Envy giving chase. Envy tries to get underneath the rear of Macduff, but only gets the tip of the wedge underneath before Macduff is able to turn away. Macduff gets onto Envys side, going underneath with the skirt and pushing Envy towards the wall, but Envy is able to get off and drive further down the arena. Macduff turns, facing towards Envy from a distance. Envy curves round, facing Macduff, and then starts to move slowly in. Macduff pauses, and then goes in...Envy moving faster...they crash into each other, and Envy is able to get enough momentum to go underneath the front skirt!
FLIP! And Macduff is now right way up again, but its rounded behind is now facing Envy...Shane senses the opportunity, and rams Envy beneath Macduff, pushing it across the arena, past the pit...the robots ram into the wall, and the flipper on Envy retracts. Kody sees what could be his one escape chance, and tries to reverse over the top and off the wedge, but doesnt move quickly enough...
FLIP! Macduff somersaults into the air! Turning, rotating, falling...through the venting CO2 of its opponent, onto the raised flipper arm...bouncing onto the wall...and over! Shane throws his arm into the air in victory, Kody beginning to applaud, smiling slightly at his robots acrobatics, as the spotlights focus on Macduff lying across the arena entrance area - ironically, just below him.
CEASE
Well, its been an exciting battle, as battles go - but although Kody Kunz and Macduff The Second put up a good fight, the winners of The Roaring Donkey Mini Tournament are Shane Swan and Envy!
Congratulations to Shane Swan, who wins a fantastic mansion in the next life! And commiserations to Kody, who still gets a small hamster. :proud:
Thoughts? Thanks to everyone for reading this and taking part, Its gone pretty well and I may do a larger one shortly, perhaps in a different format.
