Better than anything I could do, it does look pretty awesome though
looks good indeed
Done some more today, got the escs and batteries mounted, started the final wiring. Also made a start on bolting the chassis together but had a few problems with shite screws ( I've got two stuck in my polycarbonate baseplate that snapped off whilst getting tightened) so I've ordered some high tensile ones that should be much better. Pics to follow in a couple of days
Made a start on bolting the chassis together today with much better bolts ( the old ones were made of some horribly cheap weak metal). Apologies for all of the wires floating around it'll look much neater when it's done.http://i921.photobucket.com/albums/a...ps1000849f.jpg
Just watched the vid and looks like its coming along nicely =)
B&Q drill motors by any chance?
To be honest I have no idea, I brought them from another roboteer along with the batteries and electronize, and thanks the build has definitely had it's ups and downs so far but it's getting there, going to be a squeeze to get the axe mechanism in there though.
Nice one! 10/10 for using Polycarb, are you using it for the top armour as well?
Yea polycarb for the lid as well , the baseplate piece is 9mm and the top will be about the same, hopefully it will hold up
9mm might be a little on the thin side from some of the hammers and axes this year from the looks of things, so I'd have a backup just in case (maybe make a spare HDPE top plate in case the polycarb cracks?) but other than that, good stuff!
Also, should note: I don't have a lot of experience with polycarb, so I can't say for sure how it handles, it's just what I've heard from what I've seen on here, really. I'm fairly sure I've seen a machine using 20mm Polycarb and that was pretty tough...
I'll be ordering spares, maybe go up to 11 or 12mm just in case the current one isn't up to it, i remember Jamie (drumroll) saying that he used 6mm for the top of drumroll and the only thing to get through was a hydraulic crusher. The only bits i can see being a problem are the mounting points but hopefully it'll be fine.
Don't worry, when I had SMIDSY I had a 10mm polycarb top on and thor took a nice hit. Made some dents but it didn't crack so you should be fine :)
My only worry would be the fact that it's on a smaller frame, hence it's got less of a chance to bend and absorb the impact but I'm sure it'll be fine!
Being such a small piece is definitely a worry, the baseplate is only A4 size so if it takes a big hit it's not going to flex too much, i imagine it would take a pretty big impact to do anything meaningful though.
Yeah it definitely should be more than enough. The 6mm piece on Drumroll that I mentioned is less than A4 (only 180mm x 215mm) and Little Hitter couldn't crack it. And as impressive as Grant's new axe is, I would expect it to survive that too.
6mm HDPE on top of T2 took multiple hits from LH3, no problem. It gets a small dent and if it hits an edge it slightly deforms but it's generally fine.
This year on Rango I have just 5mm HDPE. I will admit, that's not a lot at all, lol. As for safety of 10mm polycarb, the entire arena is made in that thickness. The trick is in leaving it a bit loose so in an impact the middle can bow in and the edges lift. Without this it may crack. The arena is safe because the panels are huge and all of the bolts are loose, hence the iconic rattly sound when something hits the arena wall.
Perhaps... All I could suggest really is getting a spare sheet and giving it a good hit with a hammer to see what happens, or even test your own weaponry on it - that's how I tested (and subsequently broke) the HardWired I prototype, though it did prove that I'd got the wrong material haha!
I think the biggest thing to take care of is the holes for the screws, since they're probably the main weak point there.
Smacking it with my own weapon is actually a brilliant idea, i'll have a 1.5kg axe run off a 250 watt scooter motor which should be capable of a fairly impressive whack, i'm sure if it can survive a direct hit from that it'll survive most things.
Well it works twofold then, if both work nicely and stand up to it, you've got a good setup! It's really all about crash testing it and ironing out creases once you've got it nearly done... don't want to get to the champs and find out there's an issue with it!
That's all I'll be doing with HardWired II, smashing it into walls at full pelt, throwing it around outside, seeing it anything comes loose or whatever. If it can't stand up to that, there's no way it'll be able to stand up to other robots in the arena!
I'll be testing, testing and more testing before the champs to make sure it's all sound, i can't simulate a full combat siuation but i can get it as good as possible
Yeah, definitely - I can't really either, but I'll be running it with at least twice the weight of a feather on it to see how it handles that, and probably hit it on the edges with a hammer. Not to the point of completely annihilating it before I've even fought it, just to make sure it doesn't disintegrate on the first hit!
That said, I'm a strange one and that might actually be one of the worst things to do. I don't really know...
I'll be letting it throw itself around with the axe to make sure everything is solid and nothing comes loose. Swinging the axe around at full power and some big self rights should make sure
Who did you get the electronics from? I'm trying to build a new machine at the moment, but I'm hopeless at electronics and wiring.
The batteries, escs and motors came from mattsdragons( Matthew) and were the old bits from Turisas as far as i know
Been very busy today getting bits and pieces done, photos and another video to follow once photobucket wakes up
New Video is finally up, it is a long one but as mentioned in the video i'll be doing videos throughout the rest of the build to show what's going on. http://s921.photobucket.com/user/mrs...0ed58.mp4.html
After watching the video it appears it's been cut short during the upload, albeit only by maybe 20 seconds
Is it possible for you to upload it to youtube? I'm unable to watch it.
This computer is acting up...
I'll try uploading it to youtube now however it's from my phone as my computer is broken so it could take a very long time
As i've now decided to make video updates of the build which i hope will help future builders with their first bots, does anybody think it might be worth me posting a short video on how i've done the electronics in mine?
No real progress made i'd just like to share my latest cock up, so after taking the body off the bot yesterday to loctite the threads i was interrupted by my son waking up crying ( he's 18 months) and failed to notice that i had left the HDPE body by a radiator which subsequently came on quite hot, so this morning i go to fit the body back to the robot and find that it is now warped and no longer fits properly, and as i don't have enough material or enough money to make a new shell i have had to make the most of it and bodge a fix which has resulted in an ill fitting rear panel and a bowed side panel. So lesson learned i believe.
Ah, that sucks! And completely understandable that it wouldn't have occurred to you, just one of those things. Hopefully you can restore it.
Not being funny, but, is there a chance you could put it back by the radiator in such a way it might return to original shape, or at least take some of the warp out?
I've heated it up with heat gun and have taken some of the warp out but only enough that it sort of fits together again, it's still strong enough i would have thought, i'll be retiring this chassis after the champs anyway so it only needs to hold up until then.
A couple of photos showing the aftermath http://i921.photobucket.com/albums/a...psa8886a4e.jpghttp://i921.photobucket.com/albums/a...ps59f9e69f.jpg
I did intend a video but i've got a filthy cough so i doubt anybody wants a video full of splutters
http://s921.photobucket.com/user/mrs...19795.mp4.html
Managed a quick video, just goes over the chassis warping in a bit more detail
Not finished yet, But you get the idea.....
http://i921.photobucket.com/albums/a...ps7bd8ee77.jpg
Whoahahaha, did you try to iron the warp out?
Looks good though :D
Aaha no it was the room with the best lighting and thanks, amazing it looks as good as it does all things considered
