Been looking at specs etc and was wondering what peoples opinions are on the speed 900 clones in tents of performance for a drive or weapon system?
Those clones/halfbrothers (Johnson makes/made the original Speed 900 for Graupner, but uses the same can for other applications) are usable, but tend to draw a lot more amps, heat up faster and need a bigger gearratio to get the same end speed.
Of course, I can't speak for really el cheapo Chinese copies.
Mario... Borrowed a speed 900 of another roboteer at champs.... It looks similar but output shaft seemed a tad bigger dia, and the rear of the motor had more shaft exposed... Is that a Johnson? Just out of interest.
I have found that the speed 900 clones are not actually that bad- I use 2 to drive Shockwave 2 and one on the bar for Lambda.
Shockwave's are on a 4:1 reduction with the 100mm Competition wheels from Robochallenge and are running on 8S A123's with a Sidewinder controller which seems to all work together very nicely as it seemed to out-push many 4WD pushers at the UK champs

The copies have 5mm diameter shafts whereas the real speed 900's have 6mm
Was thinking of using them for a electric axe
Not sure how powerful an ESC they would need though, would need to be at least 30a?
I knew that Will, this motor seemed to have a 6.5 ish shaft on it...
don't use an esc, just have on/off control
That was for the drive system idea
Can't decide to use a drive or weapon system
don't know if this will be of any help (as I'm not an expert) but i googled speed 900s in the past and found these: http://www.action-electronics.co.uk/pdfs/MOTORS03.pdf
i remember reading that the seller said they are exactly the same performance as the graupner versions but I've lost that link. I think the difference in performance might be down to the fact that the ebay 900s have 12 poles and graupner/ action electronics versions have 10pole? although that action version has the 5mm diameter output shaft.
