Yeah that was the response I got lol. Hence pecking about fingertech adapters. The fingertech setups are so much nicer than the pololu stuff it's just a case of having the time to wait for spares. If Ellis could stock it and also some featherweight casters with nuts melted in I'd be his biggest customer lol. Also drill mounts and all that kind of stuff. Someone also needs to start selling removable links premade as well, I'd buy a ton of them.
Well realised everyone was right and there was no way on gods earth I was going to get robot in weight. I decided to trim it right down and now the finished body is 800g. Also got motors and wheels etc. together so that was good. I have a scoop thing to go on the front. Am massively daunted by the other beetles and ummed and arred about calling it a day at the weekend. My girlfriend persuaded me to at least finish the body and running gear. She's right when she says it doesn't matter if you're amazing at something, if you're having a laugh keep having a go. So...to this end I've put a couple of pictures up. Tomorrow is going to be a case of cutting slots top and bottom for the wheels to poke through and putting the front wedgyprongthing on. Then in the afternoon put electrics in and cable it all.

Your girlfriend is right you don't need to build a super incredible machine to have fun, it actually looks quite strong so you might be surprised. Cover the sides with something to protect to Alu angle and you'll be fine, some hdpe would absorb the hits from spinners well enough, got some 3 or 6mm stuff if you want me to bring it to the event.
looks good mate im hopefully gona get started on mine soon now that i have all the major components and my plastic has arrived look forward to meeting you in the arena
Thank you for the offer of the hdpe but should be ok, if I get stuck will let you know :) And thanks for the nice comment suvv look forward to seeing yours too. Found some more ally bar in a bin at work so made a prongy thing. And used a cordless drill to make wheel holes top and bottom. It looks like a load of rubbish.

i made my first prototype out of cardbord mate and it looked like a 3 yr olds attempt at a bath or something no shame in something starting out looking sketchy with the reliability issues of past beetles i have been told about you stand as much a chance of winning as anyone else just remember that the first uk robot wars champ was a load of old road signs and an electric wheel chair
Nearly there! Car is full of diesel and tools are ready to go. Batteries charged and just the link to go in :)
