Nice, got a bit of a spaceshippy feel to it. You managed to iron out the bugs with the photon torpedoes yet?

How about anodising that Ti cover green?
As I was down to one pack, I've been searching for ages to get an equivalent pack (either Opti or another brand) to put in Drumroll that didn't have a rubbish C rating or massively over/undersized capacity. Been a nightmare and I hold you responsible.
Well.....until I found a stock of them for £25 a pack :mrgreen:
£25 that's expensive, I had two at the same time as Dave!
£25 expensive? Cost me about £50 a pack last year with the FRA discount!
Yeah well its who you know, not what you know :-)
;) ssshhhh, atleast they're being out to good use
Weirdly I'm going to be paying loads more than that for similar-to-lesser-capacity Turnigy A-Specs... somehow I think I've gone wrong somewhere haha!
Out of curiosity, does anyone happen to know how they stack up to the Optis, those A-Specs? (Sorry for the minor thread hijack there too!)
I can't compare A-spec packs to Optipower, but they are almost as well constructed as Hyperion and Thunderpower, two other top brands. I have used A-spec for almost a year now and have been very pleased with them, particularly for the price.
Ditto, i like the A-specs, hate the ThunderPower packs. I've killed at least 3x 2.65ah G6's. I think they flat out lie about their packs potential tbh.
Ahh that sounds fair! Also handy to know because you both run spinners - I had a standard 5AH Turnigy one in HW2 but that was only running a pair of Speed 900s so didn't really tax the battery. I know spinners pull a lot of amps usually on spin up, and if they can stand up to that sort of amp draw though that's good!
Research suggests that the Turnigy Nano-tech series (and to some extent Zippy range, not sure about the Zippy Compact variant) do in fact deliver the C ratings they claim, even the enormous ratings, but they have a sometimes very short life time. People reckon they start to drop off after just 15 cycles, whereas others have been happy 80+ cycles down the line. Luck of the draw.
I'm going to use a pair of Nanos in a new pretty power hungry feather. Partly because HK has a sale and partly because I have gift vouchers to use up, but mostly because I think they'll be awesome for robot use if treated well. Not yet a convert, but nearly.
Oh and because Optipower don't have small enough 5s packs. :P
Yeah it sounds like a build quality issue over anything. I know there are people who've used the Nanotechs in the States I think with few problems but I've heard just as many horror stories... I think if you can get a few spares and you're willing to take that risk they could be pretty decent.
90% of those failures will be abuse that would kill any lipo; over discharge is a common one. That and lots seem to neglect padding them and/or placing them somewhere safe. With cheapy HK packs what tends to happen is just that the internal resistance climbs sooner than high end packs so the life of the pack is shorter. For a car or something that's a pain but for our use, where a robot might be charged just a handful of times in an event, it's no problem. Am confident they'll be fine in my application!
edit: also they're so hugely popular now around the world that it makes sense you'd hear lots of stories about them.
I tend to just buy the best and buy once... not worth taking the risk with hobyking lipos that only last 15 cycles...
On another note... small update, spent a few hours working on the electronics tonight, esc's finaly came back from botbitz- i sent them off for a re-programe as the set in 720 where the first in the uk and still had the anoying cut-out issue in the top corners on the tx... so hopefully ill be able to drive 722 to its full potential instead of winging it like i have the last 2 years....
Done something ive wanted to for a while and mounted and wired everything up as tidy as possible... takes me ages doing this kinda stuff as i like knowing all the joints are perfect and cables are kept as short as possible;
http://i685.photobucket.com/albums/v...psjk7dblni.jpg
LOL, not nearly enough cable ties! Neat wiring like that really pays off in saved time and avoided mistakes during between round repairs. Is that Anderson connector your removable link? You could save some space & weight by combining the fuse with the link - Andersons have a heap of room in the shell for that.
yeah i did consider that...but the 100a auto fuse has proven to only blow when stuff is about to explode... so i dont really want to mess with it, as its proven reliable now...also.. i really like the andersons as links... the link hole in the top plate lines up perfect with the carbon bulkhead and is just big enough for the anderson to drop down in... so i can litrally drop the link in the hole and i know its lined up- no messing about... i did used to use deans as a link but its to fidly when the pressures on, and the lighting in the arena isnt the best... Also the anderson isnt standard, its chopped down about 10mm top and bottom- the standard ones are too big to fit :)
Had first drive and drum test yesterday... seems the new wheels and sides work perfect... with the dual rates set it drives perfect and it wont flip over un-predictably, i can actually hold it right on the edge as seen at the end of the vid... but if i flip the dual rates off on the tx switch, it flips instantly due to the higher turning speed... so basically if i need to turn it over i can just turn the rates off and have it flip easy... perfecto!

The drum was pulling too much current, and the belt was getting hot, think there's too much tension, so im going to turn a bit of the drum pulley OD and that should cure it :)
Oh... and i decided it looks boring so its getting painted if i have time before the champs.
As long as you don't paint it black and orange :D
Looking forward to our fight. My machine should be well within weight afterwards...
lol black and green....
yeah it'll be a hard fight for sure! got any updated pics of your robot yet? :)
looks really nice, looking forward to seeing it fight :)
got Ed to turn the drum pulley down 0.3mm... think the belt was too tight last year which caused a belt to break... seems perfect now :);
http://i685.photobucket.com/albums/v...psmohacntm.jpg
decided to paint it... looked kinda bland polished :) ;http://i685.photobucket.com/albums/v...psuuqhfxct.jpg
All finnished now minus 1 cable tie and a small piece of foam its sitting at 13.575g... Should be bang on :)
With the amount of work Ed does on this robot, surely it should be his entry for the champs ;)
#handbags
Yeah prob lol i just design and assemble these days... need a workshop at home...
Atleast my design technique is so awesome that people like you rip me off #tart
Looking good as usual. It's going to be an interesting fight!
I think there should be a constructors champ as well! I've got 3 in that this year.
Got both 720 and 722 done early, so picked up 360 from robochallenge today where its been for the last few years... stuck some tz85's in it, tightened up a few bolts, put the link in and its good to go :)
wierd... spent years trying to get 360 to work and had loads of failures... neglect it for 2 years, slap it back together and it runs fine...
http://i685.photobucket.com/albums/v...psxezusvvx.jpg
3 robots ready when half of the people are panicking over one. Quit rubbing it in.
Great to see 360 back! Are you using it in whiteboards at all, or just demos or something?
no idea lol just thought id take it... its sat in a display cabinet dead for the last few years... just thought if its gonna be on display it might aswell potentially run lol, id probably only demo it these days as its not worth getting it smashed...id rather keep it as a display piece.
Might as well, be cool to see it in action if you do run it!
It was the scorpion causing the problems IIRC, the motors along with the magnet were drawing too much? Good to see it running again :).
yeah it was, the bosch's must be pulling a fair bit, drove it around for a while and they got warm which surprised me...
Found both the lipo's are nakard in it though so I've ordered some new ones- all being well they'll turn up Tuesday, and i should be able to give it a run at some point... haven't risked a spinup test above about 100rpm yet due to dodgy lipo's, so i'll try it on the day :)
It drives pretty smooth now on the TZ's though;

World champs report;
Did a few testing days, found a problem with one of my new lipos which ended up in the fire box, glad i found that out before the comp,
I also did a demo where i smashed up an old computer screen... probably a bad move as loads of copper wire got sucked in by the drum belt, wrapping around the motor pulley and jamming it solid, which i think contributed to my motor failure in the main competition...
first fight; 722 vs Defector vs catharsis
Went okay, defector got pretty mashed up, the driver tapped out, i got a glancing blow on catharsis which seemed to KO something internally- luckily for me as catharsis was the only robot who scared me in the entire competition, once tim's got that shaken down its going to be a strong contender- 4 points
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mcXVNNUyKd8
Second fight; 722 vs scruffy vs loki - Loki had problems when gassing up so it was just me and scruffy, got a hit on it, he got stuck on the wall - another 4 points
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kbd6KJDE92w
third fight- 722 vs mr mangle vs gluton - this one could of gone badly, Gluton pulled out due to early damage, me and mr mangle had a few knocks at eachother, then i got a good hit on mr mangle, knocking it out the arena so hard, it bounced back in, then bounced itself back out again- another 4 points
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O9hYQmC35g4
last fight- 722 vs hanibilito vs explosion; not really sure what happened here... looking forward to seeing the footage back, i think i went straight for explosion as i saw it as a bigger threat, as i hadnt seen hanibilito work in any of its fights up until this point, just my luck the one time it did work, it was wedged under the back end of 722 and flipped me out- I allready had enough points to go through at this stage and didnt really even need to enter, but still - got another 1 point and got through to the next round
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vHajdJiM7-4
next round- first fight against galactus;
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KLKnWcExnvQ
Got drawn against disturbance... my old robot 540 without the weapon working.. as soon as i span up i heard something wasnt right as the drum was screaming.... turns out the motor bearing had given up (possibly caused by the damage from the test day)... fight was kinda boring, few nocks and shoves until my motor over heated, pulled too much current and the fuse protecting the lipo blew.. so glad ive got that fuse, as the insides of the robot were pretty warm after that round.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wfvvjf4LCo8
quick pit stop for the losers melee- thanks to Ed, Gunty, Adam, Calum, Glen etc for the extra hands... a 720/722 world record time attack repair seems to be an annual thing now, and its always impressive lol
same problem again, it seems the speed of the drum is causing the grease to fly out of the drum bearings, causing it to over heat- this time against mr mangle and tormenta 3.... the esc over heated, so the drum stopped... tried to spin up again, fuse blew due to over current... so i tapped out to let Ellis and Nick go through.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=81o155hVMpk
got bored being out of the competition...so decided to find some pieces of broken robots and make a trophy for the drum off competition... grabbed galactus's old drum, mr mangles skid i ripped up, drumrolls old drum motor and some of 720's skids, along with some wooden bits from endeverour and titanium from PJ and set to work... it actually came out pretty well, got all the entrants into the drum off to sign it, then we fought it out... BOOM instant bragging rights for 12 months as i kicked there ass's.. specially Jamie's, which is the most important thing.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fRIjEER0wto
So next year....
New sharper teeth for 722 to improve engagement (was lacking this year as the teeth were very used)
New sharper longer skids to kill flippers with
lighter better grip wheels
top secret getting under super low flipper thing device
Hopefully 3mm titanium base to match the top
Kicking back thinking about how easy it'll be to beat jamie;
*http://i685.photobucket.com/albums/v...ps1u3zi9jj.jpg
Turns out it was damn easy;

"fuse blew due to over current... so i tapped out to let Ellis and Nick go through."
Lol@this.

Yeah i typed all that out- then found the vid on youtube and couldn't be bothered to re-type...
kinda boring fight? pfffft ;)
