Great shape, so chunky!
This is a CAD model of Reboot - I can't see too much resemblance to 722's panel armour:

nice CAD!
regarding welding… ill just bolt the 2 front plates and rear plate on, then just build it and tack it as i go… measure it.. tweek it.. add the next plate etc until its all done… then weld it up once I'm happy with it :) no point messing about with jigs for something like this.
Haha, good posting tactics Dave. To be honest, I still need to hit the CAD and work out what's happening with Drumroll this year so I'm sure I can throw a bit of difference in there :)
And with regards to Reboot, I was more talking about its curved outer armour. On my phone so can't get a pic of it but damn it looked good. Drumroll II was based around it but mine ended up much more boxy :-/
Ha Ha, that brings back some memories! That version is much older than the CAD I found and the armour is mostly made of old car bumpers. Gary from team Rotwang is a genius welder and hotrod builder who can take an old pile of junk and turn it into a winning design. The side armour was very effective against the robots of the day.
Oooo I love that Robot, it's one of my favourites!
christmas came early :)
just got parts back from the laser cutters… this is one side of the armour ready to be welded together… me and grant have been looking into new welding methods… meaning the welds on 722's new armour should be harder than the hardox itself without being brittle if all goes to plan;

compared to 720s old armour its only 28g heavier before the welding… a lot less than i expected :)
Cracking stuff Dave. Cutting job looks good, was it a local place?
Birmingham laser mate- not worth doing it myself for £50
That's a decent price. Did you supply materials or did they?
Hopefully it will all be welded up over xmas. Interested to try our new hybrid welding idea lol.
Hybrid = duct tape + hot melt glue :p
hybrid welding takes ages….
Tig welded inside n out by Grant at robochallenge, which took hours to get it all millimetre perfect… It then had some super top secret mega weld put on top thats hard as hell (cant post on here for fear of Jamie ripping me off haha)… took me over an hour to just grind down the welds on the one side… ran out of gas before we could finnish the other side, but this is how she's looking so far…hopefully all the time going into it will be worth it;

had a quick weight check- to get in weight with the same top armour as last year would mean loosing around 50g, which isnt a problem… but to get the top upto 3.3mm i need to loose 450g… looks like the bulkheads might be getting some pockets put into some non load bearing area's soon :)
Sounds a combination of 309L base welding and a high carbon toplayer.
Try harder :)
Tell me your secrets!
Nah man that's looking rather sexy. What I am curious about is how you get such sharp lines on the edges when you grind stuff down. I remember noticing it with 540 too, is it just pure unadulterated skill or do you use more than just a standard grinding disc?
Yeah just an 80grit flap wheel mate and patience :)
That's lovely work!
Why?
It looks nice and less boxy than it's predecessor.
But drums and eggbeaters will have a field day on those corners.
I'm not so sure about that; with very hard steel, vertical spinners will not get much grip and while 722 might get thrown about a bit, its not going to take much real damage. We had an Aussie bot with similar armour and it took surprisingly little damage. On the other hand, flippers and wedges might find it easier to get under the sides and control 722.
I thought about the pros n cons for ages and decided that... if a vert hits it, its my fault for not driving good enough... which hasnt happened yet...
That and with the super hard hardox/welds it'll be hard for them to bite...
Against flippers/wedge bots... the old 720 still had a good 12mm ground clearance, so its not exactly anti wedge... plus with this new shape has more clearance when tilted on its side (needed for selfwriting) ...so it should be easier to drive back off a wedge from any angle :)
And it looks cool :)
You know its good when dave cringily referes to 722 as a she....
looking good thou mate
Hasn't happened yet.
You know that's going to be the kiss of death for the next one? :)
It's very neatly done, I'm intrigued by this hybrid welding idea...
That looks bomb proof!
Looks awesome, Leaving it rat look? Looks sick atm with the sides like that.
havent done an update in a while because i havent really done anything in ages... but im bored so figured id do one since the champs is approaching... hopefully it will encourage the rest of you to update your build diarys with pictures and such... sorry about the low quality phone pics in advance..
was looking like 722 was going to be over weight... so milled some pockets
http://i685.photobucket.com/albums/v...sspsay1q2.jpeg
Got some nice new connectors that have just come out... there a bitch to pull apart... and have little cable clamps etc and can take like 300amp and the beefy 8awg cable that comes with the castle creations stuff nicely;
http://i685.photobucket.com/albums/v...syowb55tg.jpeg
finished the armor.... not sure if im going to paint 722 or just keep the polished look yet;
http://i685.photobucket.com/albums/v...smqvyebfu.jpeg
Desgined the new top plate and dropped of some 3mm grade 5 titanium to the laser cutters this week... hopefully that'll be cut out by Tuesday;
http://i685.photobucket.com/albums/v...psprbbuvgc.png
speed holes are for speed/weight reasons etc etc
i made a new base plate too but that's not really picture worthy
...so yeah its all looking very mediocre right now... just waiting on my tz85's to turn up so i can finish the electronics module and Ed wallace is hopefully knocking me up a new shaft for my 2nd mega customy brushless motor soon.... took way to long to design that... anyhow, after that im done :)
Just so everyone's clear, the Optipower 5S, 3650mAh battery Dave is using is the same one that I use in Drumroll. And just so everyone's clear, I had mine first, for once ;)
in fact i had the very very last 5s 3650's.... as there discontinued now and i emptied out optipowers stocks haha
You're kidding? Bollocks, only got one pack and was going to order another. You get the last laugh this time Moulds *shakes fist*
Leave it polished! As for build diary updates, there needs to be more of them from everyone! I'll do mine soon!
The armour looks great with after buffing; I'd still paint it to stop it rusting.
I'd just put a clear lacquer on it, prevents the rust but keeps the beautiful metal finish.
722 is looking really mean! Nice work!
I would go as well with the clear lacquer finish, just to prevent it rusting.
Clear lacquer is nice for display but as soon as it gets scratched looks aweful.
Yeah... might just rub it with wd40 to keep the rust at bay....
Got the top titanium panel back from the laser cutters and got a spare produced at the same time...

Currently looks like ill be 140g underweight!
Thanks for the comments :)
That's sexy :O
