What's the opinion on slipper clutches in spinners?
A neccesity. Now to source one strong enough to do the job in the size and weight we want to devote to it.Quote:

Burning rubber indeed.
I hope you calculate in the spares and ease of maintenance.
Slipper clutch? Never bothered. If you want to allow slippage then use a V or O belt. Such a large bar is only going to have issues being stopped if it hits something solid like the side of the arena and even then I think it would have a hard time stopping it.
If you want a comparison for what you are building then watching videos of NST
This should be made a sticky, I've learned more about spinners lookin here than anywere else :)
I'm thinking now that id pin the bar to the pulleys via 4 7.5mm by 75mm metal pins, although I'm not sure whether that would be strong enough, meaning the slipper clutch idea seems more appealing.
The only events I can run something like this at is the robo challenge events correct?
such a thick bar will always be an issue to drill and machine. Speak to those such as kenny and see how much it would be to machine the holes for you. ALWAYS do it properly with a spinner first time.
Yes it can only be run at robochallenge events
Hmmmm in that case, I'll have to give it some serious thought. I did a very simple costing list and it came up at £400 so it's a lot of money for something that can only be used 2 or 3 times a year (although I could always remove the belt and run it at other non-spinner events). I'll prob complete the design anyway
you just have to do the maths and figure out how to keep t below 500rpm to run it as non spinner events, then ramp it up for the full combat ones :)
i thought even if the spinner runs at less than 500rpm you can still only run it at spinner events unless it is a thackbot (spinning motions comes from the wheels)
According to the rules, to put it short, to be classed as a spinner, it must be over 500 rpm
It is only twackbots or those that rotate using their wheels are exempt from the rules on spinners. In short, if the whole robot doesn't rotate and it's only a section, then it is not exempt from the rules on spinners and must only be operated in a suitable arena.Quote:
Full body spinning robots with an eccentric mass or €žtwackbots€Ÿ, are excepted from this section unless they
spin over 500 revolution per minute.
Wait, so can you run a spinner under 500 rpm at RR and RL shows?
Only if it's a thackbot (it spins using the power from the wheels, NOT USING A SEPARATE MOTOR! )
you can only run either a standard twackbot like the saint that spins around to damage other machines or a machine like the melty brain spinner I am building as long as they spin under 500rpm
So just as an example, NST couldn't run in a RR or RL arena even if it set it's bar under 500 rpm?
no it couldn't going by the rules on spinners
well, it would still have a wedge and the design is half-invertible so its a difficult decision
There has only been one spinner event this year and I don't believe there will be another, so don't expect 3 times a year to run it.
The Germans allow full power featherweight spinners in their arena, so , the 2 MMM's a year are an option.
Wouldn't that cost a bomb to get over to Germany?
I personally would build a spinner, but only once I have more cash spare and have build the types of bots I want first. It may even be after my eventual heavyweight. When that will be I don't know :)
Depends on where in the UK you are.
If you're close to London, you can grab a Thalys, come to Brussels to be picked up by us. The only thing you need is your robot, the specific spare parts and a change of underwear.
Of course, some money for the hotel and food is nice.
Combat robotics: officially more important than nutrition? :)
Nu, but to participate in RW series 5-6-7 we have forgone on having kids. And we like it that way.Quote:
