Sounds like you may need to take on Alex with Block of Wood after that comment when you get your machine built haha
hahahaahahaha
the difference comes down to price block of wood = £150
Satans mutt= ££££££
yeah pretty much but block of wood will always be one of my favourites
I think we may have wandered off topic a bit. Went from a nice thread about helping build a robot to getting the poor guy involved in a grudge match before he's even started haha
Yeah lets get back on topic and yes i'm planning to use the drill batteries
Whats wrong with them?
They will get you through a battle or 2 but most people prefer something with a bit more longevity. It will keep costs down though and you can always upgrade at a later date.
okay i'll probably stay with the drill batteries for a little wile and if it is really bad then i will buy new ones.
What is the size limit for the robots? i know the weight limits are 1kg to 13.6kgs but i'm not sure on size
There is no size limit. My feather has 495mm diameter wheels is 960mm long and about 900mm wide

Okay thankyou to everyone who helped if i need more help i'll post on here and when i start building i'll start a build diary.
Bear in mind that in terms of dimensions Seraphim is probably the biggest featherweight about, so no need to aim for that sort of size.
Okay thanks for all your help.
I have 1 more question. Would it be better to get parts now and keep keep them to get 1 by 1 for the robot due to me having only about 40 pounds to spend right now?
Not sure, I suppose it depends on what you want to do.
Coud start modifying some drills or something, thats quite an active thing to do and you can test them using the drill batteries. Or could build a model of what your trying to build from cardboard or something, may even have things like that lying around the house from packaging etc. Just to keep yourself busy until you get the funds to get everything you need.
Could even (and I hate to repeat myself again) if you have spare wood kicking about in the house/garage or somewhere like that build something from that, even if you're not going to use it in battle, to give yourself both something to do and also an idea of how your design is going to shape up. Will also show you how big you would need to make it to fit everything in as your drill batteries and motors will take up a fair bit of the space you're going to need inside.
Just an idea if you don't fancy just waiting.
i'll make on out of cardboard to test it could you please post a video or website to show me how to mod the drill motors?
remove the battery
lye it flat with the screws pointing up at you use a screw driver and undo them all
lift the case off ( the trigger part might also lift)
remove all the plastic outer parts
so you have the drill motor gearbox a switch gear in front of you
take the drill chuck in your hand or a vice and look inside you will see a reverse thread screw
undo the screw turn to the RIGHT
un screw the chuck
unscrew the next plate this will be holding back a spring get rid of this too
you will see or hear a load of ball bearing falling everywhere (un less you catch them) i would recommend removing all these
replace the reverse thread screw
clip the motor wires
DONE
to make it work as needed you need some (i think) 2.5mm diamter grub screws to replace the ball bearings screw them down until you can't turn the shaft but hand (not overly tight though)
think ive covered it all
enjoy :)
alex
does there happen to be a video? i think it would be a lot easier.
Alex got there before me, but heres a link to a site, has a few photos on it too.
http://www.wa4dsy.net/robot/drillmaster/index.html
To add to Alex's description there are also two small clips in the bit where the battery clips in to that you need to take out.
I actually just bought some of the grub screws you need to get hold of today. They are M5 5mm grub screws.
I got them from here :
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/m5-x-5mm-stainles ... _837wt_907
but I haven't done the mod yet, so cant recommend them or otherwise though i'm hoping they'll be fine. Though if you want to wait I'll get them within the next few days and let you know if they suit. Jamie recommended that size to me and he has done it before so i'm sure they will be fine.
Thanks :)
Also, Alex mentioned (but it is important as you cant buy them in shops) that you need to keep the reverse threat screw and replace it once the motor is free from the rest of the drill parts. The one I am talking about is, in the link I sent you, the screw being removed while the drill motor is in a vice.
Can't believe I've never looked on eBay for those type of grub screws :shock:Quote:
I've always bought them from CPC and paid roughly £6 for handling and packaging, meaning that an order for a £1.50 product usually cost almost £8. Thanks for linking them Tony :)
come on Jamie i thought you were once a student Ebay the source for all robot parts :)
Not a problem Jamie, I went to that link you sent me and after adding p+p and other associated costs they were looking for 8.95!
So quick search on ebay came up with that, was just about to send you the link to it as I remembered reading that you were stuck for better places to find them.
cant see how much those cost as the listing ended but where i got mine from sold 5 for 75p m5 5mm length
you do have to buy a minimum of £3 worth of stuff total but when building a robot bolts and screws etc would easily pass that
Alex, I got many a part for my robots on eBay but never once considered it to be a good source for fixings. Now I know though :)
Just been eyeing up some larger diameter 10.9 grade bolts to replace the scrawny 5mm ones holding Drumroll's teeth on.
Tony, cheers mate. Considering all the companies that charge packaging and handling, you've probably just saved me a small fortune!
Your right on that one, some of the handling fees companies charge are just stupid. A con really that they can advertise those prices then bump them up when they realise that someone will have to put it in the post for you.
I'm definitely keeping that guys ebay shop in my favourites!
here are some pictures of the CAD version of the bot
You may want to put something on the sides to stop it getting stuck on its side if its flipped. Looking good though, nice and simple.
Do you know anything i could put?
Even just a small line of plastic so its not a flat surface.
okay thanks
Something along those lines maybe:
Thank you :)
Not a problem, may even want to angle them slightly to make the odds of which way you land slightly in favour of landing with the ramps the right way. Not sure if that will make a difference or not, but may as well.
Thats a tiny detail though, something you don't really need to worry about until after the rest of it is built
I am quite bored tonight....
do you like the name? i think its quite good but as i said my sister came up with it
I was just using it because you had mentioned it and there was 20mins or so before the Rangers game started lol.
i'll stick with it and if i need to i'll change it before it's built.
I like the name.
