Destroyed or not, it doesn't really matter...

Cassius II was a completely new machine by Rex (the motors, batteries, pneumatics, chassis, etc. were all new, both robots are still displayed side by side semi-regularly at certain events I believe) just like the 'new' Splinter was - allegedly - a completely new machine with new components (although I find it hard to believe every single component couldn't be reused in some form, and roboteers are prolific reusers of parts) yet Marti suggests above that it still wouldn't be allowed due to being too similar, and logic would suggest that Splinter would also be too similar.
Now, if you were to enter the Splinter duo's previous machine (Ivanhoe) then you'd have more of a case, but I strongly think that Marti would consider both Splinters 'not significantly different' in the same way that both Cassii are 'not significantly different'. You might have an argument but it'd be a very weak one.

Re: Martijn's little underdog tournament!
Cassii? Is that a real word?
-
Re: Martijn's little underdog tournament!
Does it matter? :proud:
But still, there are options open. Take Steg-O-Saw-Us. That was a Grand Finalist, and thus can't be entered. Steg 2 also doesn't apply...but what about 3 Stegs to Heaven?
What we have here are three completely different robots, and one of them (as it turns out, the only one 100~ kilos) was not a semi-finalist.

Re: Martijn's little underdog tournament!
A last hope, Leo: pick Facet (S3). The one made by the Scrapper and GBH team.
-
Re: Martijn's little underdog tournament!
He could get away with picking GBH 2, seeing as its completely different from GBH 1.
-
Re: Martijn's little underdog tournament!
However, Facet has the more effective weapon.
-
Re: Martijn's little underdog tournament!
This is what I know about Guzunderbot (Sorry about going on about it)
It was a red box with some sort of lifting arm and an axe
It might have come from Scotland, but I might be thinking about Juggernot
Did anyone see Guzunderbot's heat (The same one where Plunderbird met its end :proud: )
-
Re: Martijn's little underdog tournament!
Don't worry, Elliot. I understand. Most of us probably don't even know that Guzunderbot exists!
-
Re: Martijn's little underdog tournament!
I did :P
Although I'd be interested in seeing its heat as well...or all of series 5 for that matter...
-
Re: Martijn's little underdog tournament!
Joey, do you know where it comes from. I'm sorry I keep asking, but I have an eye for detail :proud:
-
Re: Martijn's little underdog tournament!
Not a clue, sorry :proud:

Is it really? Bear in mind that we never saw a great deal of GBH 2 in action.
-
Re: Martijn's little underdog tournament!
Yes it does have the more effective weapon, flipping over Terminal Ferocity and Firestorm before it was pinned onto the arena wall.
-
Re: Martijn's little underdog tournament!
GBH 2 managed to flip quite a few robots over, and it can self-right. Even IF Facet had landed on its back, I'm not 100% sure its flipper was set to allow it to right itself effectively.
But I digress, this isn't a place to discuss which generation of a robot/team is better than another.

Re: Martijn's little underdog tournament!
Bumping this thread for Elliot's sake, as I found a picture of Guzunderbot:

Re: Martijn's little underdog tournament!
Thanks for the picture, Mark.
If you go on Youtube, you can find heats B, C, D and I of S5. I saw Guzunderbot VS General Carnage, as well as Plunderbird VS S3 :proud:
Also keeping this alive by posting this :)
-
Re: Martijn's little underdog tournament!
You're welcome, Elliot.
Anyways, if anyone would be willing to enter another robot to get this tourney started, then we would be much obliged.
-
Re: Martijn's little underdog tournament!
Guzunderbot comes from Birmingham, in West Midlands county.
I think it looks like a cargo train engine
I have a whole list of robots that never made it to the semis if anyone wants it
-
Re: Martijn's little underdog tournament!
Well, if it's allowed, I'll take Panic Attack 24K (which I believe is a separate robot to its more successful incarnation)
Failing that... I'll take Onslaught.
-
Re: Martijn's little underdog tournament!
Good morning, everyone :)

Re: Martijn's little underdog tournament!
*Pokes tourney with Joey's stick*
This still going on?
-
Re: Martijn's little underdog tournament!
Stop bumping threads
You're falling into your old habits again...
-
Re: Martijn's little underdog tournament!
ok, at long last...
1. Joey - Anarchy
2. Andy - Fluffy
3. Mark - Lightning
4. Kody - SMIDSY
5. Elliot - Guzunderbot
6. Chris - Big Nipper
7. Jack - U.F.O.
8. Richard - Gemini
9. Steven - Hydra
10. Shane - Trax
11. Aaron - 259
12. Liam - Robochicken
13. Daniel - Revenge of Trouble and Strife
14. Ben - Barbaric Response
15. Sam - Crushtacean
16. Alex - Onslaught (the Panic Attack series had too much similarities)
sorry that I let this thing rot for so long :proud: , also sorry to read you didnt want to enter this tournament in the end Leo, I was trying to go for something different with this underdog tourney, and to clarify what counts as an underdog, I had to draw a line, which I did in my opening post, adding the twist that you had to do some research in the history of the game to determine what qualifies and what doesnt :)
OK, the draw...
Anarchy - Barbaric Response
Crushtacean - U.F.O.
SMIDSY - Trax
Revenge of Trouble and Strife - Onslaught
Guzunderbot - 259
Big Nipper - Robochicken
Lightning - Hydra
Fluffy - Gemini

Re: Martijn's little underdog tournament!
I've been hoping this tourny would start up before too long. :D
MARTIJN'S LITTLE UNDERDOG TOURNAMENT!
ROUND 1
1. Anarchy VS Barbaric Response
I sense the heavier walker will strut to victory, maybe with a little help from the judges.
2. Crushtacean VS U.F.O.
Tricky draw, but I think one lucky flip from U.F.O. could seal victory.
3. S.M.I.D.S.Y. VS Trax
See Trax's fight with Storm 2. S.M.I.D.S.Y. for me.
4. Onslaught VS Revenge of Trouble 'n' Strife
Onslaught to win via pitting. I can see the scoop giving the spinning ring problems.
5. 259 VS Guzunderbot
259. Easily. :P
6. Big Nipper VS Robochicken
Big Nipper to pluck the 'chicken clean.
7. HYDRA VS Lightning
Ouch, not quite the draw I was hoping for. Not much to do here but avoid the front and instead attack from the sides and rear, preferably the rear. Flip it about whenever I can, try to hammer the underbelly and either shove it into the House Robots' corners or dump it in the pit ASAP.
8. Fluffy VS Gemini
Fluffy to slice the twins in two. Or is that four?
I've always liked the idea of an underdog tournament, Marti. Here's hoping you have better luck writing one than I did. :proud:
-
Re: Martijn's little underdog tournament!
ANARCHY vs. Barbaric Response: Uh...the back of it is polycarb iirc, so go straight for the robot, bring the axe down, and hopefully plant the axe behind the flipper to try and neutralise the flipping force (it is low pressure, and I think with all the leverage BR wouldn't be able to lift Anarchy much if it fired its flipper with Anarchy stuck on it) and try and plant axe blows on it as much as possible to go to the judges and win, although if chances for flippin' and pittin' come up I'm in there :)
I reckon Anarchy could self right, the ears on the side can't have been there for nothing and the axe had a lot of momentum in it so it may have been able to throw itself back over just off that? It's a shame Tornado never tested that aspect of it :P
-
Re: Martijn's little underdog tournament!
Bleh.
Anarchy vs. Barbaric Response
I don't care how well engineered Anarchy is, it's not going to be fast enough to avoid getting tossed from the side. :P Barbaric Response to win.
Crushtacean vs. U.F.O.
I'd say Crushtacean can easily slow that spinner down.
S.M.I.D.S.Y. vs. Trax
Happily there is not much Trax can do to me, and I should get under him at every opportunity. Use the lifter and spinner sparingly; toss him over, then shred him. Rinse and repeat until he's a goner.
Revenge of Trouble and Strife vs. Onslaught
This could go two ways. Either TnS could tip Onslaught over, or vice-versa. :proud: Given Onslaught's experience, I think he'll be the one to do the tipping. Onslaught to win.
Guzunderbot vs. 259
259...moving on...
Big Nipper - Robochicken
Big Nipper, though Robochicken is hilariously awesome.
Lightning vs Hydra
Gah. I really don't know. I'm going to take a guess here however and say Lightning will win, sadly. As much as Mark fangasms over it :P , it's actually a good robot, and Hydra couldn't get under much. Still close.
Fluffy vs. Gemini
Fluffy! Gemini won't stand a chance. :proud:
-
Re: Martijn's little underdog tournament!
spinner? u.f.o is a flipper XD
-
Re: Martijn's little underdog tournament!
...
Oh damn, I was thinking of U.R.O., sorry about that
I still think Crushtacean will win though. :P
-
Re: Martijn's little underdog tournament!
Fluffy vs. Gemini
The Gemini twins can't do much other than flip Fluffy about a bit. But with the gyroscopic forces from the hammers and being invertible, it should be fine. My tactics are to get the hammers up to speed and go for the closest part. The wheels are quite a large target and I seem to remember they can be punctured. So I will try to hit those as many times as possible and try to immobilise them. I also think the armour was weak but I don€™t remember what it was. Fibreglass or something like that, which I should be able to rip up very easily.
I think Anarchy, UFO, Trax, Revenge of Trouble and Strife, 259, Big Nipper and Hydra will win the other battles. Good luck with the writing Marti. :)

Re: Martijn's little underdog tournament!
Alright, time to use Lightning to get revenge on Steve for Cyrilium Mach 2's horrendous defeat in EOTR Annihilator:
We've already seen Hydra's weakness, mainly involving that pitiful side and rear ground clearance. I, on the other hand, am driving a robot with one of the lowest ground clearances in the history of real robots. I'll try to get underneath the sides and rear of Hydra, press the pit release button, and shove him down using the side flipper. My special aluminum alloy, though weak by vapour standards, managed to hold out very well against 13 Black's disc, The Alien's spinning hammer, and Thor's pointy hammer, so it should survive that axe.
Good luck Steve, and thank you, Martijn, for not blowing up at me for bumping this.

Re: Martijn's little underdog tournament!
hehe, Big Nipper
Just try and flip it many times to swing a JD... it could happen right?
:proud:
