4.8mm Hardox 600 everywhere???
I do no make 4.8mm Hardox600. The thinnest Hardox600 plate that I bring in to the UK is 8mm, so unless you are machining the hell out of my plate I assume that you are having us all on.
Okay...
1. Who are you?
2. What 4.8mm Hardox?
:S
1. Sams 4.8mm Hardox 600 :proud:
Ah, the third set of stats from the top down. :P
Still like to know who Johnny Boy is though. :P
I believe he is in some way associated with the company responsible for the creation of Hardox, whose name escapes me. (correct me if Im wrong)
I think specifying individual grades of Hardox is a bit nitpicky for our purposes, for what its worth, and the only thing that should really matter to us is the lower limit of 3.25mm. 4.8mm is a bit of a weird thickness though...
Fair enough, then.
To be fair, there is no reason why we cant have any thickness of hardox below whatever the maximum is, as technically, as this Johnny person mentions, you can just machine it down.
Woo! lets try making hardox foil!
1mm Hardox... :proud:
Is Johnny Boy from SSAB?
Yes I do work for SSAB.
I would like to help if I can.
There is so much bogus information on this website that I thought I had better get involved.
Examples such as 1) the primer paint on Hardox will not kill you 2) There is no such thing as 1mm or 2mm or 4.8mm Hardox plate in the UK 3) Spark erosion cutting is not the best or cheapest way to cut Hardox...this rubbish advice goes on and on.....
If you have any questions regarding Hardox please let me know. I cannot promise to answer your questions quickly but if I can get to a computer I will give you an honest answer.
Good Luck
Well I sure hope the coating wont kill me since we do use Hardox 450 a lot. :)
But let me clarify one thing. this is the fanfic section. The robots and their specifications here are not real, just thought out. Most people in this part of the forum with a few exceptions such as me, do not have any technical expertise on materials. So I am not going to correct them on their various thicknesses and so on. If you do find glaring errors, please feel free to correct them, but please cut them some slack.
(Message edited by leorcc on September 04, 2008)
The examples 1) 2) and 3) are contradictions to posts on this website. There are at least another 50 more ridiculous claims about Hardox. I do not want my product to get a bad name because of ignorance.
Bad name? Are you kidding? People here worship Hardox. :)
Yeah - I dont know at least one of my robots that doesnt have Hardox on it :proud:
Leo, you are proof that is does not kill......thankyou. There has been loads of posts about toxicity, fumes, and general rubbish. SSAB coat the steel in a weldable primer to help fabricators. It reduces weld spatter and results in a high quality weld. That is all it does.
Is it possible to discuss this on another thread so we dont clog up this one, please?
Still waiting for AJ and David.
Leo, I work for SSAB and Hardox is a trademark word. Hardox is also open to all the usual trademark abuse that you will find across the world. I was pretty laid back about the abuse of the word Hardox and the fighting robot fraternity until I came across some bloke who sold some Hardox 650 discs to one of your members. As Hardox650 is only used in South Africa and has a minimum thickness of 50mm this has to be rubbish.
Again, if you need some help please let me know.
Flaming Hell
Weight: 100kg
Dimensions: 90x90x60 cm
Weapon: a triangular spinning cage with 3 sharpened bot openers on each end, weighing 5kg each, spinning at 3000 RPM, powered by a Lem 130 on 36v, which, theoretically, puts out 82.471 KJ
Power: 2x Bosch 750 motors at 24v (its been made so that the cage motor gets 36v but the drive only gets 24, as the drive is ok as it is on 24V)
Shape: circular base with triangular cage atop
Speed: 15mph
Drive power: 4bph
Notes: Flag atop to show direction and to aid self righting, and the cage spins 2mm from the ground. Small bearings for the cage and the far set apart wheels give it increased stability for a FBS
Turning Circle: 0cm
Armour: 3mm titanium
Wheel Type - 4 small wheelbarrow type wheels (no need for great traction)
Strengths: Power of cage
Weakness: Unpredictable bounce off from an opponent
Name: Flipping Hell
Dimensions: 120cm x 80cm x 40cm
Weight: 100kg
Shape: steep wedge front, elongated wedged tail (not used as a weapon)
Weapon: 50 Bar 2 pivot pneumatic flipper, 100mm bore, 180mm stroke ram powered by CO2, which generates a force to throw a 100kg robot 20ft up and 15ft across. The mechanism is a 4 bar flipper, but the rear arms sit much lower in the robot than those of Storm 2 and Biohazard. I will try and get a picture.
Top speed: 15mph
Transmission: just like Razer€™s
GC: 0 at the front, 2mm down the side, 4mm at the back end
Turning Circle: 0cm
Armour: 6mm aluminium and steel alloy
Strengths: Can win with one weapon shot
Weakness: Limited Gas supply, 2 stage self right
Notes: 4 wheels, the rear two of which are Razer type, so the flipper is always facing its opponent.
The self righter: Look for a video on YouTube of Biohazard fighting Vlad in early RW, and yu will see what I mean by 2 stage self righting, but FH does it considerably quicker.

Its not that slow actually.
Thanks, guys! So heres the draw for Round 1 of...um...lets call it VFT 7.5:
Flaming Hell vs SOR X
Robo-Owl vs Squish Reincarnated
Psyclonizer vs Under Pressure
Walk Dont Run 3 and a Half vs Wedge Devolution
Reventon vs STAT
Eurypterus Evolved vs The 6isc
Achilles vs Leprosy Infection
Exodus vs Holepunch
Flipping Hell vs Wedginator Devilution
Spin Dash Unleashed vs Troubloon 6
Nidhogg vs The May Tracks Has You
Back To Rock 3 vs Flank Attack 2
Inferno vs Sacrifice
Axe-O-Lotl vs System Shock 4.0
Eternia vs Nitrogene 5.0
Black Panther vs Robo-Hedgehog
TACTICS OF A WOOTY NATURE AS BEFITS A WOOTY TOURNAMENT:
STAT vs. Reventon
Firstly, his blade wont be able to do much to me, seeing as it appears to be on a straight 1:1 reduction from the motor if the speed given (6000rpm) is anything to go by, so I think torque for damaging anything will be limited and my foam rubber tyres are rather safe...basically, just get in there with speed, power, power, power, power, and speed, ram it around, be all over it like an overexcited puppy and never let it get time to recover, possibly sticking the spike in through any gaps or the slot in front for the blade. The ground clearance I have should minimalise the chances of him being able to push me around since the wheels should still have traction, so go all out until I get the chance to get it down the pit, at which point I aim to get it in as quickly as possible while also being controlled enough in my movements to avoid falling down myself.
NIDHOGG vs. The May Tracks Has You
Get in at the side, lift, crush, pit button, pit, avoid flipper and arena walls.
Good luck people :)
TACTICS AND UBER-PREDICTIONS:
(Winners in Italics, my robots in Bold)
Flaming Hell vs SOR X
Robo-Owl vs Squish Reincarnated
Psyclonizer vs Under Pressure
Walk Dont Run 3 and a Half vs Wedge Devolution
Reventon vs STAT
Eurypterus Evolved vs The 6isc
Achilles vs Leprosy Infection
Exodus vs Holepunch
Flipping Hell vs Wedginator Devilution
Spin Dash Unleashed vs Troubloon 6
Nidhogg vs The May Tracks Has You
Back To Rock 3 vs Flank Attack 2
Inferno vs Sacrifice
Axe-O-Lotl vs System Shock 4.0
Eternia vs Nitrogene 5.0
Black Panther vs Robo-Hedgehog
Robo-Owl vs Squish Reincarnated: Attack Robo-Owl at the sides and aim to get it onto the wedge. Crush down and hope to disable one half of the tracks, or drag the machine towards the pit. Avoid the blade and mainly focus on attacking the tracks.
Inferno vs Sacrifice: According to the stats, Inferno is using two small (compared to some) drive motors that draw a lot of amps, meaning that it produces a lot of heat. Also, it seems that Inferno is protected inside by flammable foam. Personally I think Inferno is quite an apt name for Pauls machine. Burn, Robot, Buuuurrrn! :proud:
Squish Reincarnated vs Robo-Owl: Get round the back and sides, maybe try to rip the srimech off, shred the armour, use the arena disc or pit
Black Panther vs Robo-Hedgehog: Use the scoop setup, manouvre round the back, push into the hazards and CPZs, while hammering, pitting will be my main tactic
(Message edited by neontetra23 on September 05, 2008)
Reventon: BOX RUSH TO THE MAX AND NEVER ALLOW A CHANCE TO ATTACK!
Walk Dont Run: SHOCK KILL Wedge Devolution to death and pit it ASAP. AVOID THE FRONT LIKE MAD, and just NEVER ALLOW A CHANCE TO ATTACK!
Richie is back indeed! :proud:
Flaming Hell vs Son of Ripper X
I think SoR can get this one easily. Flaming Hell to meet the bottom of the pit.
Robo-Owl vs Squish Reincarnated
Squish to do what it does best: squish. :proud: One more pitting to notch up for Mr. Stickler please!
PsycloniZer vs Under Pressure
Not AJs ideal opponent. Under Pressure to pit Psy after taking a little damage.
Walk Dont Run 3 and a Half vs Wedge Devolution
Wedge to flip WDR all over the place and eventually into the pit. :proud:
Reventon vs STAT
Hey, a match STAT can win! And will win, by a mile. :proud:
Eurypterus Evolved vs The 6isc
Bad match-up for Frank. Eurypterus to pit the damn thing.
Achilles vs Leprosy Infection
I seem to recall these two met before...Ill say Leprosy Infection for the hell of it.
Exodus vs Holepunch
Depends what set-up Liam uses.
Flipping Hell vs Wedginator Devilution
w00t, a Weston battle. :proud: Anyway there are no OOTAs so I should be moderately safe from his weapon, although I will do my best to avoid it. Basically wedge it and pit it, my weapon will be my srimech if I get flipped over. Hopefully I have more flips than he does. Only use the flipper offensively if Ive got him on my wedge and near the pit. Good luck Dave. :)
Spin Dash Unleashed vs Troubloon 6
Oh dear, not an opponent I wanted to face...basically attack then do the spinny thing and attack the sides/rear with my rear disc, then again with my front disc, and so on and so forth. Ill be more manoeuvrable so that helps, best o luck Stevey-boy. :)
Nidhogg vs The May Tracks Has You
Rack up a pitting for Mr. McConnell!
Back To Rock 3 vs Flank Attack 2
Flank Attack...just.
Inferno vs Sacrifice
I love the smell of burning robot in the morning. :proud: Daniel through.
Axe-O-Lotl vs System Shock 4.0
Axe-O-Lotl to kill the tracks/wheels/whatever moves System Shock. Yes, I know its invertible but I forgot what moves it. Shut up. :P
Eternia vs Nitro-Gene 5.0
Meh, I actually think Paul will win this one. It IS the only Nitro-Gene thats in weight, anyway. :proud:
Black Panther vs Robo-Hedgehog
One more pitting by Alex Holt to end the round.
Looks to be a killer, Rich! :)
Tactics and predictions when appropriate:)
Assuming this is done 2 fights at a time, then SOR X and Squish to move on.
Psyclonizer vs Under Pressure
Haha I can try out my horizontal crusher against a FBS. His 90 cm fits nicely within my 150 cm wideness, lol. A hit within my claws will make his weapon scrape against my 3,5 mm Hardox and slow it down, using my claws will give me the possibility to pit it :).
Back To Rock 3 vs Flank Attack 2
Dont let him scoop me, lol. As long as my wheels remain grounded I still have the 6WD combined with the LEMs, which should anable me to push it to hell and back. The saw and the lifter should help me damaging its wheels. Pit ASAP.
«Flaming Hell vs. SOR X»
Im going to drive straight in with my front wedge. This is a powerful spinner but I think my 6mm Hardox wedge can take it. That should slow the cage down and allow me to get a good attack in. From there Ill go in with the wedge again and flip Flaming Hell over. Im not sure, but I dont think it can self right. If it can then Ill just try to repeat those tactics as much as possible. Another option is to try and damage the cage itself with my own spinner.
«PsycloniZer vs. Under Pressure»
This is going to have to be a case of hit and run. Under Pressure is a very big target to hit, so quite simply Ill spin up and try to get as many hits in on the body as possible. There is plenty to hit. The armour isnt the thickest either so causing some damage is quite possible. If I can get around the back I could potentially cause some damage to the ram and other internals through shock damage. Ive just got to keep to the sides and rear.
For the other battles Ill go for Squish, Wedge Devo, STAT, The 6isc, Achilles, Holepunch, Wedginator, Troubloon, Nidhogg, Back to Rock, Sacrifice, System Shock, Nitro-Gene and Black Panther to all go through.
Liams tactics and probably wrong predictions
Flaming Hell vs SOR X
SOR X, I would guess, but it could go the other way.
Robo-Owl vs Squish Reincarnated
Squish. Simple as. :proud:
Psyclonizer vs Under Pressure
Two good robots, I think PsycloniZer has the edge.
Walk Dont Run 3 and a Half vs Wedge Devolution
Easily the VFT6 champion.
Reventon vs STAT
STAT, probably.
Eurypterus Evolved vs The 6isc
dunno what EE is :proud:
Achilles vs Leprosy Infection
Achilles
Exodus vs Holepunch
nooo... Holepunch is one heck of a vapour, but it has dodgy self-righting. This is how Exodus will be kitted out:
Front wedge at 30*
Rounded rear
Track coverings with barbs
Weapon Setup 1
Torsion sprung skirts on the sides
Top/Base= Red
Front/Back= Yellow
Sides= White
Skirts= Pink
Tactics are to try and flip it against a wall, from where it cannot self-right. If I cant do that then just try to throw it around and get it in the pit. Good luck Leo :)
Flipping Hell vs Wedginator Devilution
Flipping Hell.
Spin Dash Unleashed vs Troubloon 6
Troubloon 6, I think.
Nidhogg vs The May Tracks Has You
TMTHY, probably.
Back To Rock 3 vs Flank Attack 2
Flank Attack, I guess.
Inferno vs Sacrifice
I think this is very close, but due to the clever strategy I think the clusterbot will go through.
Axe-O-Lotl vs System Shock 4.0
LOL, Kodys prediction is pointless as without my tracks Im still fine! Ill stick with the lifting wedge and try to pit Axe-o-Lotl with my pushing power advantage. Good luck Chris :)
Eternia vs Nitrogene 5.0
Another close draw with a Paul robot in it :proud:
Seen as Nitro beat Mina though Ill go for Paul.
Black Panther vs Robo-Hedgehog
Black Panther. Simple as
Axe-O-Lotl vs System Shock 4.0
Axe-O-Lotl to snag a wheel hole then drag System Shock into the pit.
:proud:
Exodus vs Holepunch
Get to the rear, bite down as soon as I feel the beak is far enough over the back. that should crumple it enough to make the tracks useless.
Eternia vs Nitrogene 5.0
Since none of us clan flip OOTA, I will open the pit asap, and flip nitrogene over and push in the pit. If nitrogene tries to selfright flip it over again. I have much more flips on board then pauls robot does. I also have the less thirsty drive system so on any war of attrition is in my advantage.
Added Tactics for Reventon:
STAT is petrol driven, so... Ill push it onto the flames, watch it get all roasted up, and then pit it.
That is, if there is any flames...
If not, then Ill be boxrushing it and pit it.
Samuel, do you not know how to use the Edit Post button? :P
I actually dont have flames in my arena, Sam - in RW, they seemed mostly for show, and, well, these fights are presented in the form of text.

Welcome to the official comeback of Velociraptors Fanfic Tournament! This tournament began in late 2002 and went through six full series, seeing such robots as Son of Ripper, Disctruction Evo, Mass Disctruction Ultimate, The Disc 2 and Wedge Devolution come through to win the title! Unfortunately, VFT7 faltered and was never completed, but after an exceedingly long hiatus, the time has come to try again. So the arena has been cleaned, the house robots checked over, and the Velociraptor mascot suit dusted off, and we are ready to begin Velociraptors Fanfic Tournament 7.5!
In the first of the one-on-one battles which will make up this tournament, the descendant of our first champion, Son of Ripper X, enters the arena, now evolved into a vertical cylinder and wedge, armed with a spinning rim powering a kinetic flipper! Its going to do battle with Flaming Hell, a circular robot with a deadly spinning cage on top!
House Robots: Drilla Killa Ultimate & Megaraptor
3, 2, 1 - ACTIVATE!
Flaming Hell sat where it was, spinning up the cage, as SoR X came charging towards it. A second later, they collided - and the crowd cheered as both robots skimmed away! SoR X spun in the opposite direction while Flaming Hell bounced off the arena wall and away! It quickly got the cage spinning again, but soon found SoR X attacking again, this time primed to use the flipper! Upon impact, the timing for the flip wasnt perfect, but it was enough to propel Flaming Hell skyward as SoR X flew away again! Tumbling through the air, Flaming Hell hit the ground and bounced up again, coming down on its side! Thanks to its top flag, it slowly settled back onto its wheels - but this was enough time for SoR X to come in for a proper attack! A fire from the slightly dented flipper, and Flaming Hell shot upwards again! It landed just outside Drilla Killa Ultimates CPZ - SoR X gave it a quick shove all the way in, and DKU was only too happy to say hello, gripping Flaming Hell in its pincers! The three front drills slid out, but ended up going through the cage harmlessly! There was no mercy when DKU released, however, as Flaming Hell was caught and flipped by SoR X again before it could use its weapon! Another flip took it towards Megaraptor, almost striking the House Robot in the head! Flaming Hell landed behind Megaraptor, who turned to grasp it, successfully catching the cage and lifting Flaming Hell clear off the ground, before dropping it on its head!
SoR X was waiting right outside the CPZ, but as it caught Flaming Hell on its wedge again, it had barely started pushing before Megaraptor intervened, its huge claw reaching down towards SoR X! SoR X desperately reversed to escape, but the delay allowed Flaming Hell to spin up again! SoR X was left with no option but to charge again, while Flaming Hell angrily charged back aiming for the sides! Upon impact, SoR X was again flung away with another scratch in the Hardox - by the time it came in again with the flipper, Flaming Hell was still spinning! SoR Xs timing was off again as it fired the flipper, only tipping Flaming Hell, but that was enough for the bot openers to hit the floor and propel it away in a brief Mauler dance! Just as it was tipping over again, SoR X reversed in with its spinning rim, smacking Flaming Hell into a corner and leaving it stuck! Since being stuck against the wall doesnt count as a KO, SoR X attacked again! Bashed against the wall, Flaming Hell bounced off and right over SoR X! As it rolled over the floor, it became clear that the last impact had bent the top flag, so as Flaming Hell settled, it found itself unable to self right! The battered SoR X waited while the even more battered Flaming Hell was counted out, doing a quick victory spin once its rim had spun down!
CEASE!
SON OF RIPPER X GOES THROUGH TO ROUND 2!
And the audience doesnt have to wait long for more, as tracked robot Robo-Owl hopes to be a hoot with its synthetic feathers and interchangable front discs, and wedge Squish Reincarnated hopes to put its jagged hydraulic claw, designed to both lift and crush, to good use!
House Robots: King Cobra & The Martian
3, 2, 1 - ACTIVATE!
Robo-Owl didnt trundle on its tracks as it got the faster start, racing forward with its square discs spinning - it quickly veered away from the ominous sight of Squishs open jaw, but turned back as Squish did and glanced its opponents rear corner, causing Squish to jump backwards! As Robo-Owl attacked again, Squish didnt quite turn fast enough and received another blow, this time along the side! With the third charge, Robo-Owl ran onto Squishs wedge, but the top crusher didnt come down quite fast enough and Robo-Owls tracks carried it to safety! Having avoided the weapon this time, Squish advanced, and as Robo-Owl went for the sides again, Squish just managed to catch it - not on a track, but on the rear armour! The top claw was lowered excruciatingly through the titanium, but as the lifter came into effect, it caused the discs on the struggling Robo-Owl to touch the floor! Both robots flew from the impact, but it wasnt enough to release Robo-Owl! Still lifting its victim, Squish moved to pin it against the wall before moving into a better position. The claw came down again, this time halting the right track! Squish moved into the arena centre, triumphantly lifting its prize, receiving a cheer from the crowd! It then lowered and released Robo-Owl....only to find that the punctured track had not been disabled!
Its weapons operating again, Robo-Owl retreated then came on the attack again - Squish advanced but failed to catch its opponent, and instead ran into King Cobras CPZ! The House Robot eagerly swung its axe, landing a hit on Squishs wedge before it could retreat! Robo-Owl took the oppotunity to charge into Squishs side and smack it towards the wall! But as it charged again, it miscalculated and hit the wall with the discs, bouncing off! Seizing the oppotunity itself, Squish ran into Robo-Owls side, biting the centre of the body like a hungry beast! Robo-Owl was lifted to take its tracks off the wedge, before Squish withdrew the claw a little to get into a better position. It came down again, now into the rear wheel of the left track! Squish held its prey for a few agonising moments before releasing again to inspect the damage: Robo-Owls left track was not stopped, but certainly slowed, leaving it veering to the left as it tried to escape! It tried to position itself to strike again with the discs, but Squish successfully avoided them to attack and crunch into the left track again! This time, it missed anything vital, but was able to showboat again as it lifted its victim, before releasing again to twist and try and go for the left side! Squish didnt quite manage it, instead biting the central armour again, but with a little reverse from there, it managed to get a grip on a wheel of the left track, holding Robo-Owl almost until it was required to let go! Once freed, it was clear Robo-Owl had been slowed on both sides, but it valiantly attacked again, just managing to nick Squish! Next time however, Squish won out again, crushing down again on the right track! Robo-Owl was helpless as it was lifted again - Squish reversed into the pit release and manouvered towards the opened pit. An attempt by Robo-Owl to run off the wedge came to nothing as it fell into the abyss, having been well and truly Squished!
CEASE!
SQUISH REINCARNATED GOES THROUGH TO ROUND 2!
Next:
PsycloniZer vs Under Pressure
Walk Dont Run 3 and a Half vs Wedge Devolution
Not sure if these fights are up to my old standard but then, its been a while. Also realised I do have flames in the arena if you count The Martians heat ray.
(Message edited by velociraptor on September 08, 2008)
Awesome fights, Richard! Welcome back to the writers desk! :proud:
