Solids. Or pneumatics filled with foam (or something like that - if I remember correctly Stingers tyres were filled with rags).
There are a lot of good tyres to be found these days. Best are rubber ones. You could use those that you find on those 2-wheeled thingies for kids (forgot the name). Theyre solid AND have grip. Also the ones you find on shopping trolleys.
Or the Robochallenge blue wheels.
I just had a crazy idea. Why not use a wheel-barrow as the shell? It has a wedge on the front and it has aliminum shielding already. It could be cut down to the size of the chassis.

Would I need 4 speedos for 4 motors or can I wire 2 motors on to one speedo? If I could then how could I wire one battery on to one speedo?
You can wire 2 motors onto one speedo however you must make sure that the speedo can take the current drawn by both motors without giving out the magic smoke.
You can wire a single battery to both speedos by wiring the speed controllers up in parallel with the battery. This allows you to have a larger single battery pack.

Kevin, If I were you Id invest in some reasonably cheap yet high-current speed controllers such as the Electronize controllers (which can be found at http://www.technobots.co.ukwww.technobots.co.uk).
Having read from the start of this thread I beleive you are more familiar with the type of speed controller often used with cheap RC Cars which usually comes in the form of a POT (Potentiometer) directly connected to a servo for proportional current control. This method is very fragile for use with a combat robot and probably would not handle the current required unless you have a particulary large POT. I definately reccomend investing in a speed controller similar to the Electronize or just an on/off servo operated swich if you really cant afford anything much. An on/off switch would make the driving particularly hard but should handle the current much better than a POT if you choose the right switch.

Is it just me, but is Ampflow and Robotec the same?

The Ampflow is the Roboteqs big brother - capable of 160amps rather than 120amps of the standard Roboteq.

hmmmm those battle kits look nice but i think they are a bit pricy and just a bit too powerful (for the UK anyways :))

the main differences between the two kits are the motors used etc.
The battlekits use much more powerful motors and speed controllers although this is not necessarily good as repairs are therefore more expensive.
Although I am sure you said that you are based on the other side of the pond Kevin so therefore it may be easier to get hold of the battlekits.
The connections are usually made with crimp connectors or something similar.
I could buy the Zeobot if I wanted to. I will I will. But not the flipper Zeobot, just the chassis.

It may be worth your while checking out the Robo Challenge Robo Kits. They are very light so that you can add more armour or active weaponry, and they are still powerfull enough to push other feathers around easily enough with its drill motors. I dont think the Robo Kits are on the website yet, but if you e-mail James at James@robochallenge.co.uk he will send you pics and info.

Well little flipper is very decent - but even that wouldnt get a 12kg bot three meters in the air. The 6kg kits survived being tossed in the air a load of times though.

Some of the 6kg kits were getting flipped across the arena by Firestorm at one of the events I attended (one little one in particular kept going back for more) and still survived to continue the battle. The only time they seemed to stop was when the external power switches were hit to the off position - so they should stand up pretty well.

Is there any 12kg kits?
The 6kg kits are so incredibly versatile that they can be simply bolted together to give a 4WD four drill motor feather - but if you stick with just the one kit (2WD) then you can invest all that extra weight in a decent weapon.

From what everyone has said these kits use drill motors. These are pritty much what most people use for drive in there feathers (a bit of a generalisation but mainly true). There will be plenty of push with them.
yup, as Ian says - the kits use drill motors as used by many featherweight robots. You can always overvolt them a little if you think they arent giving you enough speed but they should be fine.

If youre the other side of the pond to us, beacuse Technobots wont ship internationally you might look at what Carlos been up to at http://www.battlekits.comwww.battlekits.com he does a featherweight (30lb). As your that side of the pond from us Id suggest you look to build to the 30lb limit rather than our 12Kg limit.
