were building a Boxer, its a converted Granny Hoist (very similar to an engine Hoist). Weve got a pair of wheelchair motors, with a vantec. The arms have got 2 50*200mm rams, plus it will probably have extra movements on the body.

karoline they are indeed very polite, i think it may be a ploy to help hide the incorect facts :)
dan tom kia ? surely not dantomkia then
thorac ? maybe thorak :)
still it was a good write up, and good fun terrorising the crowd. cant wait for next year looking at mikes boxer it will be more like crowd control :)
James, do you remember the drunken idiot who punched Hammered Ali between the eyes? I cant wait to meet him again next year.
Mike.
lol we wont be seeing him for too long then :), and you havent seen our one yet :)(build in progress) its gonna be evil :)
I have a feeling that the boxers will steal the show at the NEC this week. As well as the boxers, we have featherweights from schools and colleges competing in Sumo, assault course and 3-a-side football + many other robot disciplines. We also have the 3 winning colleges (out of 10 entries) who will be competing with their customised Zeobot featherweights.
This event at the Design & Technology show will help raise the profile of robotics in education which can only be good for our sport.
Paul
will there be a report up of the exhibition, eg videos, pics etc? Would be nice to see how others are going along.
you said exactly what i was just thinking :)
Alan / James
That is certainly the intention, I will post here when the UKRG website has been updated following the event.
Paul
This looks good!
A couple of questions relating to the boxing:
Although the body needs to be between 1.6 and 1.8m high, does the sholder for the arm(s) have to be at a normal (human) shoulder height for the height of the robot, or could it punch from the base upwards at an angle?
Is there a spec for the gloves, the mass of the hand inside the glove or the length of stroke on the arm?
Does it have to have the same form as a human boxer? (all be it on wheels)?
Cheers,
Si
another question regarding the height;
both si and mike have made boxers that are shorter than the rules state (which in my opinion is alot more stable) are the rules likely to be changed regarding this for a shorter more stable height. also at this point may i add that our boxer is going to be build to the same height as the other existing two.
We need some confirmation on the rules as well, as we brought up the same issues. We dont want to build this thing within the rules for them then to change!
I had better point out that both Simons and my boxing robots were concieved and built before the UK Robotic Games rules were made.
Paul and Co. have strived very hard to make a set of build rules so that fair contest can be had.
The intention of our boxing robots was to entertain. UK Robotic Games rules state that the robot should be higher than our with the intention that they can be knockd over and hence lose the fight. Last man standing!
Different build rules, different purposes.
When we build the next ones watch out. They are going to be something VERY special.
Please do not let Simons or my boxers distract you from building to UK Robotic Games ( come on someone, make an abbreviation here )rules and intentions.
Mike.
Mike is quite right, the UKRG rules for height was intended to allow for a knockout by a boxer being knocked over. However, both Mikes and Simons boxers proved that even they could be knocked over duing a fight even with their low centre of gravity. I will confirm the height during the next few days in light of this experience gained at the NEC. BTW, the 2 boxers were brilliant, the crowd really enjoyed them, video to follow.
Paul
Paul,
I smile everytime I think of them. They were really brilliant. The crowds gathered immediately as soon as we got them in the arena...a bang with a spanner on the C02 bottle (simulated bell!) and away they went! What a laugh.
Well done Mike and Simon. One of the most entertaining robotic things Ive seen. I think there is a lot of scope here for something new and very different.
Ian
I have now uploaded (with the help of Stu)a video of some of the things we got up to at the D&T show. We had teams from Young Engineers and some colleges from Lincoln competing in Featherweight Sumo, Footie, and Obstacle course. We had the boxers slugging it out, and other robots on static display.
Not everything is on the short video link, and I have kept the quality low so that non-broadband users can see it too. The long awaited Zeobot is there for all to see in its 8-wheel-drive format...even my mother could drive it as its so smooth!!!
enjoy............. http://www.ian.lockhart1.btinternet.co.uk/dandt.htmhttp://www.ian.lockhart1.btinternet.co.uk/dandt.htm
Ian
looks like it was fun, good to see the boxers actually fighting each other. i wish work wasnt so busy or id of made my way down there. still its a bit more inspiration ot get on with our boxer.
Those boxers are really quite shockingly entertaining, yet they are so simple! Looks like theyll catch on quick. The Zeobot looks great, its definately abit different to what the leaflet said about 6 months ago :proud:. Cant wait till you give us some more information on that little beastie.
P.S.
Any chance of a completely separate section for the UK robotic games? Chances are that this thread is going to grow very quickly
UK Robotic Games do have their own forum to chat in detail about the challenges, new bots, rules and so on at the http://www.ukroboticgames.orgwww.ukroboticgames.org web site.
Mr Stu
I know, but this one seems to be used more, hardly anyone has posted on the ukrobotics forum, I guess this forum has become the central meetingplace for crazy people like us.
Ewan, the FRA forum remains the main robot combat forum since the demise of the RW forum and long may it continue to do so. UKRG has not and will not push its own forum on the FRA forum as that is both inappropriate and does not meet our aims.
UKRG is all about attracting new builders into general robotics, many of these will find the traditional combat appealing and will no doubt end up on this forum as well. The UKRG forum is provided as a service to the games, especially as an interface to the UKRG team for Q&A. We have no desire that it becomes such a universal forum as this forum with its significantly high percentage of general chat, politics, heated arguments etc as can be expected from such a close community.
Over time, the UKRG forum will be used by more builders but it will grow at its natural rate. We do not wish to hijack the FRA forum with general UKRG chat but to share information that we feel will be of interest to FRA members - remembering that the UKRG team are all FRA members and no doubt crazy people like you.
Paul
i have to second the comments about the boxers, while at the nec, my favourite past time was gently running them around the arena, and then scaring the women with an upper cut :) great fun
Best 3 days ive had in a while, and a great responce to UKRG.
I think there may be a boxer coming from me after xmas :)
jonno
Jonno, the whole idea was to take the robot with you - not go around decking women with an uppercut just for laughs :)
i did,
well ripper, rip, foxy boxy... oh yeah and the arena. :)
does that count enough for scaring people.
More than enough my dear :)
I thought the video trailer showing the couple of Boxers was brilliant just what is needed, I think it was Mike /Simons creations if Im correct,
come next year there will be bloody robot Boxers everywhere,:proud:
Better than bloody roboteers in boxers everywhere :proud:
Managed to plug the UKRG at the recent post 16 e-learning conference at the GMEX. several interested peopel, sadly my little sumo bot wasnt ready to roll, but people seemd interested nevertheless.
What i did find was that when someone asked me later, and I didnt have the site on the pc I was using (bookemarked normally), I couldnt remember the YRL, and Google was a bit lame in finding it... might be worth putting a few more direct links around the place.
We appreciate that Rob. The URL is ukroboticgames.org or .com or .uk etc etc. they all lead to the same site.
Google has got a cache of the site but it does not appear that high up the search results listing yet. In fact searching for UK Robotic Games brings up Technobots link page first!
More links to the UKRG site will certainly help spread the word. Ill ask our webmaster if he can do us a banner or something for download.
Tony, we were unsure whether the boxers would take off but it looks like they will which is great for the UKRG. It does mean the games can offer something for just about everyone.
I wasnt at the games but seeing all the kids gathered around one of the boxers when Mike took it up to Doncaster was amazing. They loved it.
Further to post above, we now have a UKRG banner to download http://www.ukroboticgames.org/support.htm>here
Dates for the heats of UKRG are now up on the latest news section of our website.
Ian
hows other boxers coming along? ive got 99% of my stuff and the main part of the frame is done. Ill get some pics up after ive done abit more (probably after Denbigh) anyone got any pics of theirs?
hi all
latest pic of frozilla on profile...just wait till its painted luminous green !!....LOL
Lol the face of the robot kinda looks like this guy

Finished frogzilla pic on profile hes ready to rumble !!!
Id just like to wish the UK Robotic Games team the best of luck for their first regional final tomorrow in what will hopefully be the start of a successful competition. Oh, and good luck to the competitors as well.
Regards,
Lenny
P.S. Who else from on here is attending the Northern Heat - just so I know what were up against :)
Just back. What a great day! Every team seemed to have a great time and the football was brill! Cant wait for the next one!
We just got back with three very tired kids. They have had a great time and want to do more events next year. Going to have to start a club methinks!!!
We will have to do extra driving practice, not just two days like this time. Trying to get the kids together is not easy.
Im sorry I was unable to attend. I knew on Tuesday that I hadnt enough time to fix the IBC and get the other machines ready. Perhaps I could enter one of the final-only events? Water Wars sounds interesting...
Its great to hear the qualifier went well, good luck with the northern qualifier and the final!
Yes, congratulations to Paul, and Jackie, and Ian, and Stu, and Ian and Jonno and John and the list goes on and on for running the event so well. There was a really friendly atmosphere all day, the kids all got really stuck into the competitions, and the enthusiasm and excitement was fabulous, loads of giggling, shakey nervous thoroughy jacked up students, this sort of engagement with their subject is what teachers are after. I overheard one team, amid their squeaks of delight at getting through the heats, planning how they were going to spend their lunchtimes reworking and rebuilding ready for next time.
Mission achieved.
My only suggestion for a better day would be to get the refreshments stand to be really refreshing and sell deoderant. 100 sweaty teenage boys (obviously the girls didnt sweat)is a powerful thing....
