But on the application form it has space for all your details etc then says If you have a robot.... and then asks for all the robot details. Just to emphasise, I *will* be building a bot (if its the last thing I do which I hope it isnt) as soon as funds etc allow but it would be nice to be able to join in in the meantime.

Roaming Robots, Preston 29th Feb 2004
Kev,
Im Jonno, and I run Roaming Robots. Membership of Roaming Robots is essentially designed for teams who have a robot, sadly it simply isnt practical to allow everyone into the pits - and members of Roaming Robots are usually only allowed into the pit area if theyre running a robot.
However, part of the learning curve, is talking to the roboteers, asking questions, and learning from their experiences. If you introduce yourself as a member, we would try and accommodate you, with a minimum of a small time in the pits to talk to people 1 to 1.
Due to finite space in the pits there have to be limits on the number that can be accommodated and priority in the pits will be given to those members attending with robots.
You can of course join Roaming Robots without a robot, and please feel free to contact us to see if there is space at an event to come along into the pits - though we stress this isnt possible at all events.

Kev, Ill back Jonno up on that one. Theres only so much space in the pits, sometimes limits have to be placed on the teams that attend with robots - you sign up for an event and its first come first served, even for us veterans of Roaming Robots. Priority is always given to teams who have robots, otherwise there wouldnt be a show !
Drop Jonno a mail and let him know, Im sure he can let you know if he can fit you in somewhere though !
Oh yeah... and build a robot !

Thanks for the replies all - I can feel myself becoming more knowledgable by the minute :proud:
Oh yeah... and build a robot !
Hehe in progress. Im just torn at the mo whether to build a cheaper FBH or spinner type or whether to wait until I can get hold of the pneumatic bits to make a flipper. Im trying to think of unique (or at least different) weapons but it may end up being more aesthetically pleasing than successful in combat :) or maybe neither :proud:
Im just particularly interested in the Preston event with it being in my home town. Maybe I could throw something (quick prototype of one of my many random ideas) together out of plywood or something..... Have to have a think. Then again I dont even have radio gear at the mo
So if I join - would I get (me and the missus) in free as spectators or does the free entry only apply to attending teams?
Incidentally - if any of you jonny southerners (:proud:) need or want to know anything about preston, facilities, hotels, car/bus routes etc drop me a line and if I dont know I can probably find out. Ditto anyone coming without a bot who wants free parking for the day - there are a few places in the town centre assuming you get there early enough. Mail kevdgill(at)hotmail.com.

Usually the only roboteers that get into an event free are those taking part at the event. To understand why you need to understand the demarkation between the various parties.
Usually Roaming Robots are asked by an event organiser to bring the arena along - Roaming Robots in turn advertise on the forums for say 25 teams to come along and compete. They then send out car passes etc to those team that choose to come to that event.
If Jonno is running the gate at an event then things are a little different, but where Jonno is providing an attraction at an event - its usually just those roboteers attending with a robot that get into the venue for free.
Kev - meander over to http://www.technobots.co.ukhttp://www.technobots.co.uk and see what bits you still need to get a prototype moving about and come along with a robot. I can assure you that youll learn far more coming with a robot than you would ever learn just looking around the pits !

Why dont you see if there is a local (ish) team you can join, help at the events and gain experience while you build your own machine.

Hi Kev,
I live in South Manchester and Im going to the Preston event. Unfortunately I have a full complement of team members for that day, otherwise I would invite you to join my team.
I dont have any other dates booked this year, mainly because I have problems transporting a heavyweight across the country. If you have a big enough car you could join my team as a driver.
My email address is on my profile if youre interested or just want to ask me any questions.

Theres a Holiday Inn *right* nearby. Thats probably the nearest hotel. Theres not a lot of big hotels in Preston so youll probably be there or at one of the Travel Inn clones on the outskirts.

Please use extreme caution when aking Jonno to recomend accomodation - We booked a lovely B&B he recomended - looked great - but was 50 miles from anywhere. Can laugh about it now.

Well. Heres a quick rundown of the ones I can think of nearby.
Holiday Inn - Town Centre. Right next to bus station and guild hall. Probably relatively pricy but (Im told) quite nice inside these days.
Marriott - Broughton (North of Preston) on A6. Very nice. Very expensive. Strictly for the loaded (Ed).
Norman Jepson Travel Lodge - just off M6 J31A. Standard travel lodge fare with a Brewsters pub providing the food.
Premier Lodge - Bamber Bridge. Just out to the south of Preston near M6 J29. Again, pretty standard I assume.
Whitburn House Hotel - A6 north of city centre. Looks nice enough and well maintained from the outside and is out of the city centre if thats what youre after. Too far to walk into town for a night out or whatever but a taxi would only be a few quid even after midnight.
Holiday Inn Express - just off the M6 at J32/M55 J1. Another travel type place with a Tom Cobleigh pub providing sustenance.
Im sure there are more but theyre the ones that spring to mind on the basis that youre always pretty safe in a travel inn clone. I think theres another one actually IN the charnock richard services (south of M6 J28) but youre a fair old way out of Preston then, albeit right on the motorway.
Theres also numerous small city centre B&Bs. I know nothing about any of these - Im sure some of them are ok, but some are largely inhabited by DSS residents and should be avoided for a recreational stay over. Many are on Fishergate Hill. One of the larger ones is the Moose Hotel but its at your own risk as I know nothing about it.
Hope this is some use

Id reccomend the Holiday Inn express out of all of those. About the same price as a Travelodge, and includes a free continental buffet breakfast.

Team Mute will be in the Holiday Inn in Preston, nice and close to venue and plenty of pubs.
Were off for a few beers on the Saturday night with Jason (Thor) and Shane (Air), so more the merrier :)
