I have to say that Mute is one of the more brillant robots of the combat robot world. It adds more action in flipping and self-rghting.

Daniel - where the hell have you been!?
You better come to the Winter Tour matey! Were all missing you and Adam and mainly Jez :proud:
Mr Stu
How much did it cost to build Mute in all?
(Message edited by kevin on August 19, 2005)
Would it be possible to build a featherweight version of Mute?
Thats a stupid question, there is no perfect answer, do you mean a featherweight with two flippers? If so, then yes its perfectly possible but stupidly pointless in a featherweight. As to the how much mute cost, its cetainly worth over two grand.
Ewan without even thinking its worth twice that I would say.
2x Lem Motors @ 700quid each= 1400
3x 36v Bot Packs @ 170 each = 510
1x Dogs Bollox Speedos @ 335= 335
1x Custom mad Pneumatic system= 2000 (no joke when you take machine time etc)
Thats not even considering other things like armour wheels gears spares etc.
Ooo missed this one.
Cost wise, no idea. Mute has been running for 5 years now and has changed dramatically from its original form. The only original bits are the ally chassis and 2mm stainess steel skin. But from current parts alone Id say in the region of £2500 excluding the valves because they took about 6 months of tinkering before we got them working properly. For the rams you are looking at about maybe £15 each for materials and about 8 hours machining per ram.
Featherweight Mute, well Ive got it all drawn up - even got the chassis cut too. It had a full pressure gas system idential to Mute but with 4x 3/4 rams and front and rear flippers. I doubt it would have stood up to todays spinners though as the armour would have been a bit thin!
And Mute is 24V not 36 :)
Hope that covers everything.
1x Custom mad Pneumatic system= 2000
Ian- I dont charge myself for engineering fees, I doubt the mute team do either :)
When making custom parts the only thing you as the builder need pay for is materials and finding time to make stuff.
You would charge the time and labour costs onto whoever you sell the components.
But Dave if I were to go and try to build an exact copy of mute I would not have the facilities to be able to make that system and I think it would be fair to say that 2,000pounds would be a conservitive estimate as to the cost of the design, prototyping etc of the valves
Ian you should not build an exact copy of any Bot try come up with your own idear (may be edit a little )
I have no plan to John but what I ment was that if hypothecically speaking I was to make a copy then you can see where the price arrises from.
I also know this is an old thread but Id like 2 ask
Where are U Mute?
Time for a little bumpage, as Mute is having a little spring clean thought id post some pics, this is still the same chassis and flipper that we built for the 80kg version and just added lots more armour :)
Only major changes since she last run to the robot shell are new titanium nose cone (old one was stainless steel and had become very short), titanium cross member (old one was ali) and titanium rear flipper angle section/cross member (old one was ali).
If everything fits in we wont have anything under the side pods (speedos and radio stuff used to be in there) all electronics will be in the robot with the gas bottles and batteries

nice wheels :)
Looks very good. :)
I'm going to look forward to throwing it out
For all those times you used to beat up the old Ripper !!
At least there will be some room to drive round the arena now with Ripper being a bit smaller
Very true !! Very true !!
Finally! After all those years of not being seen, we've seen pics of Mute in its current state! They look good, can't wait till its fully rebuilt again. Robot events haven't been the same without its comical self-righting
Nice little video :D

they're probably bigger than the real one!
Just been working on Mute and found Micro Mute 2 in our storage crate, couple of pics in its current state with the old baterries that lasted about 2 fights
Hopefully with the advances in batteries we might get it working again, if we can find some batteries that can stand up to the motors with the ncc-70 speedo's

Now that is a nice looking feather, what motors is that running?
I would say with my limited knowledge that go Lipo batteries and scorpion esc but im not exactly one to give advice to the mute guys
There is no way Scorpions would last in that.
ive never used scorpions so i wouldn't know but thats my limited knowledge there
look cool.
edit: im getting esc's confused, i ment sidewinder :)
That's a FW?! It looks huge!
the motors look like bosch 120s to me, i can't be sure though. hopefully mute will confirm. the problem with sidewinders is they're hard to come by nowadays as they've been discontinued.
Motors are 12v bosch 120w running on 24V, as I remember flat out Mm2 would do about 30mph, and hit full speed in about 1.5 meters. She's a battery cooker! Motors alone at 1.1kg each I think. Also it is big, 24v nicads, two ncc-70's, four wheel drive with four massive wheels to put the power down and two rather large motors needs a good chunk of space. Remember that technology has changed a lot since we built this one.
For batteries, I've had some luck with these in my new feather using 3 18v Dewalts-
http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/stor ... _Pack.html
Capacity: 2650mAh
Voltage: 6S1P / 6S Cell / 22.2V
Discharge: 45C (119.25) Constant / 90C (238.5A) Burst
Weight: 427g (including wire, plug & case)
Dimensions: 135x44x33mm
Balance Plug: JST-XH
Discharge Plug: 4mm Bullet-connector
The packs seem to hold up very well.
Video of them in use can be seen at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H2lOjOWIr2Q
cheers for the link will take a look at them, nice videos
We have the pooooooowwwwwwwwwwwer, batteries finally turned up
Only problem now is should we go with 4 packs @ 33volt or 5 packs @ 26.4volt, guess it comes down to either longer battery life or Mute going at silly speed, guess 33volts might be fun.
http://i150.photobucket.com/albums/s...2206/batts.jpg
Go for the lower voltage. You just can't use the speed unless you are in a car park.
more speed = more fun :)
I suppose the faster you go, the quicker Adam can drive it in the pit! I would play safe and go 24volts, but then again... :proud:
LEM 130's . 75A continous power.
Theoretical stall 1100A+ (26.4 Kw of heat, glow in the dark motors) @24V.
138 rpm/V
Those LiFePo4 cells of 2650 mAh, 60A cont, 120A burst
Depending on gearratio and wheelsize... But lets take an old school UK drivetrain. 8 wheels 6-1 gearratio.
@ 8S = 22 km/h 5P = 13.5 Ah 300A cont, 600A burst
@10S= 28 km/h 4P= 10.6 AH 240A cont, 480A burst.
I would even think of dropping to 6S. Still a good speed 17 km/h , with 5P you have 10 cells in spare then.
Mute rebuild is still going good, currently sitting at 94kg with both bottles full and just batteries and wires to go in, getting close to having a working bot again :)
http://i150.photobucket.com/albums/s...uteRebuild.jpg
Speedo ended up under the side pot, we were just a little short on space for it to fit into centre section
http://i150.photobucket.com/albums/s...uteRebuld1.jpg
Flipper and gas system all fitted back in
Finally, another front hinged flipper is back
looks so tidy inside, are you still having the rear flippers?
Yep still got the rear flipper too, the angle bracket at the back holds mute rear valve for the back flipper.
Will get a bit fully with the motor wires etc but not to much.
You should have seen the orginal gas system with hydraulic valves, the whole rear of mute was full, if we dropped a pin in never saw it for weeks until we stripped stuff out.
Below picture was with bits stripped out and the orange lump was the original gas tank, no were near the 4kg we carry now
