Is there anyone on the forum who has sent an email to Mentorn to apply for tickets to see the recording? I sent an email on the 14th January but haven't heard back yet
Yes I sent one to the audience email addy, no reply
The email I sent was to robotwars@mentorn.tv, not sure if it doesn't matter what address you send it to or if it has to be the audience email address
Hi Guys,
I suspect all e-mails regarding tickets to see the show will be put on a list and contacted once the dates have been 100% confirmed and competitors applications chosen. But don't worry they will be getting your e-mails!
We've been in touch, hoping all goes well!
Are there any set dates for further information or anything yet post application or is it still firmly 'tbc'?
All to be confirmed but I am hoping Mentorn will have some news soon regarding dates etc.
Has everyone who signed the contact form now received their application form? Il be calling teams today to talk through your applications. The main feedback over all so far is there are too many wedge flippers. As there is now an extra 10kg weight allowance we are looking at how teams will be using that to make their robot unique and exciting for TV. Extra weapons, funky new shape? Please think about this and we will chat hopefully later today. Best of luck everyone!
Has everybody received the full application form now? If not please send me an email so I can let Mentorn know.
Is the Full form the Word document with the questions regarding robot type, weapons, etc and the legal declaration on the end?
Yes thats the one :)
Just hoping that the tight time limits don't effect the quality of the bots entering too much... Getting new bots working reliably in less than a month is going to be a challenge.
This is my worry too... Investing in a spinner before being a confirmed entry is foolhardy, but there is only 4 weeks between confirmation and filming!
Are spinners going to be allowed on the show? Won't be able to build anything in time for this year, but aiming to enter next year!
Spinners are allowed. The new arena is made bulletproof.
I was in the last series of Scrapheap Challenge with Ian Watts and John Frizell, they never bothered to transmit the finals on TV so anyone watching the show had no idea who the winner was!!!
Don't hold your breath for a new series!
P.S. this is in reply to Danny B's post on page four.
Shame, I enjoyed scrap heap
First time poster here, just joined FRA as well!
I can't begin to tell you how excited I was when I heard Robot Wars was coming back, and that now I'm an adult with my own money I could actually build something to enter. So I've applied with a rough design which is a rehash of something I designed when I was at school. But 4 weeks, even in my optimistic nature, seems to be pushing it.
No matter, if I get accepted I'll build something quickly. If not I'll build it properly and enter it in some FRA events - which I didn't know existed until I started researching how to enter Robot Wars.
Welcome Michael, the live events are more fun than doing the TV show anyway!
Mike.
Click on the FRA link at the top of the page to find the general FRA rule set. Each event is signed up for on an individual basis. Check out the live events section to see what's coming up. Get in contact with the event organiser who posted the thread to sign up.
Id personally heavily recommend doing live events first, and if your inexperienced to start of in the featherweight class.
Problem with rushing a build (especially your first), is you will likely make mistakes, it will cost money, and it probably wont end up as the finished product you want it to be.
Ive always personally recommended to build a featherweight rambot to newcomers, then to try weaponising that. At least then if you decide you out of your depth, or not as interested as you first thought - so on, youve only spent say £100 as opposed to £1000.
If you want, try and build something for the featherweight world championships - thats a smaller project, and has an extra month.
Thanks Garfie, I've started a topic in another forum as I'm curious as to why you suggested going featherweight. Other newbies may find it useful!
Now the rules for the TV show are updated to 110KG and a few other kinetic adjustments do people expect the live events to update and follow the new ruleset?
When do the teams get informed that they have been accepted/ not accepted through the application process ?
What's happened to the robotwars to Facebook page it's disappeared?
I think we will know the 1st week of Feb if we have been selected or not, they are cutting it a bit fine.
They was still looking for teams as of the 20th. How many have applied from here?
According to this thread on reddit, a good few have applied

Hey Clive have you missed anything on your signature !!!
I think, personally, they're finding the selection process a bit difficult. I received an email yesterday with a questionaire on which "would be used to select the participants". That's on the 25th January, near enough 6 days before the end of the month when they're supposed to make their decision. But now they're wanting to know more about the teams involved, what makes them tick¸hoping to pick up a sob story - as is the case with a lot of televised competitions these days it seems.
I'm not going to fill out the form to be honest, I wanted to take part on the basis of my idea for a robot, not on the basis of how many sugars I have in my tea. Maybe next year!
Personally, i think that's unlikely. The BBC have already said that this new series will have more of a focus on the engineering than before; their stated aims include providing inspiration for the next generation of engineers. With that in mind, i think they will look to minimise the 'reality TV' theatrics. I suspect their selection process will be driven primarily by finding interesting machines. I also think they will be looking for a good mixture of machines built by professional engineers, and those built by chaps in sheds using bits of scrap they found in a skip.Quote:

This is all my opinion / conjecture, obviously.
"...those built by chaps in sheds using bits of scrap they found in a skip..."
Damn it I should have applied!
I think they will just want a spread of different robot types, regardless of the team's background. Something like Thor or Big Nipper would get straight in as there aren't many hammers and grabbers about, but I think if all the flipper teams apply they'll end up picking a select few.
I entered the trials for series 7 with Pressure mkII, I was in with two established robots and one newcomer.
The newcomer kept grounding and broke down pretty quickly, Pressure mkII battled on but was beaten by the more experienced team's machines.
Three out of four in each trial were to go through to the show, we're in I thought.
The newcomer was allowed onto the show, instead of Pressure, because "they had amusing costumes"!
The irony is, when they went on the show their robot broke down in the bull pen behind the arena and they never made it into the arena, their robot and costumes were never seen!
TV producers and directors like to make good telly, they don't usually care how they get it, rules will be bent and goalposts moved if it suits them.
I have worked with Robot Wars, Holby City (with robots!), Mechannibles, scrapheap Challenge and Top Gear, I speak from experience.
Mike.
Come to think of it, Top Gear still owes me £200!!!
I worry with all this rush their will be a lot of "the current scene robots" with some extra armour and nothing new. The time scale is so unrealistic. I would like to see big nipper on tv again,Thor, and a few others, but without thinking of flippers I can't seem to thing what else their is.
The restrictions on spinners over the post-TV years will have really held back their development. I suspect this new series will be dominated by the big flippers. If they decide to commission more series, then i think the range of truly effective weapons / designs will start to diversify pretty quickly.
Yeah if it went to full combat you'd see stuff like Electric Boogaloo and Last Rites appearing.
I agree with you, it will make things difficult for the bbc when theirs loads of flippers, especially with how good they are anything different will be out in the early rounds. I just hope they don't ruin it bringing it back as their won't be another series. All the audience loved spinners but with the timeframe you would have your work cut out building something new. Their maybe some that dust off their old spinners but would they cut it today against Hardox.
Hardox or not I don't think the monocoque design of the modern heavy flippers are braced enough to stand up to something like last rights. You'd need a welded brick to take the hits. I have a feeling that's why the American heavy scene went the same way as the British weight classes that allow spinners. I.e., if you dont have a spinner you have an invertible bulldozer brick to stand up to one.
