giant cod sells gyros for £7
lol its only 5mm mild steel but if i have any weight left im gonna add some polycarbonate or some other sacrificial plastic to the sides
the gyro i am getting has the gain control on it instead of using another channel
You say only 5mm? That will stop nearly every spinner going ;)
lol hope so ...... my next job is to get the lifter and top plate done and put some angle round the sides so it doesn't get stuck on its side
finally got the lifter attached and tested it manage to lift 23kg slowly so should lift a featherweight ok
just waiting on the speed controller for the lifter and a few bits of steel for the front of the lifter
of an update almost got the robot finished just have to loose about 0.1kg to get it in weight, painting the top and put the LED's in
I must say I'm impressed :)
lol thanks im just hoping it can stand up to the spinner and come out still running
also gonna do a vid of it when finished
ok got the weight down to 13.61kg would that be allowed to enter or do i have to make it lighter
Can be 5g over to enter the champs, little bit more too go
i need more accurate scales i took to more reading and ive had 13.59 and 13.60kg
Looks very nice, a bit like a FW Bigger Brother!
finally finished and just under weight at 13.59kg .................. Next project a LP flipper

You've done a really good job on this. Looks solid and well built. Look forward to seeing it in battle. :)
thanks ..... I wish they had some events in east anglia like the one they use to have at wicksteed park but the event at Maidstone and Guildford are only a couple of hours away
Any chance of a video ?

Very good, much like Mr Happy :). I look forward to fighting it :)
lol thanks i really wanna see it fight :proud:
That looks amazing (Jealous), Lovely paint job (Very Jealous), and the LED's to, reminds me of K9 off Doctor Who
You said you were worried about spinners. What is the armour? 5mm Steel all the way round?
Cos of the angles at the back you wont have any catch points for horizontals like NST. The front corners could be beveled away to remove those 90 DGR corners.
Verticals like myself will struggle to get at the front cos of the angle but will probably get good hits at the back. All the more reason to practice driving :D
Cant wait to meet it in battle!
lol my girlfriend thought it looked a bit like K9  and the armour is 5mm steel front back and sides, 2mm steel base, 4mm aluminium top and the top of the lifting arm is 3mm but the scoop if 5mm ...... so i think it might be ok against spinners but i think so have gone through hardox at about that thickness :uhoh:
Inertia XL has gone through Hardox 5mm and 3mm Ti,

Same with NST but for some reason NST causes more damage, well you end up in more bits...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zTg4fMp7GwY&feature=plcp
The back of LF3 for the champs was Aluminium because it was overweight with the new flipper system. Inertia has made dents in 4mm hardox but not gone throught that I know of.
well i will just have to wait for the gadget show event next year and enter it :proud:
Very nice looking robot that- good job!
Inertia did get through the 4mm Hardox on Tiny Toon and the 3.2mm Hardox on Explosion but I reckon you will be fairly safe with 5mm steel
Look forward to seeing it in the arena
So that is why it went clean through it... I thought it was just a little to easy! My mistake
:D GD to know that it might stand a chance
I've just realised your robot is called Scruffy and your avatar is Scruffy from Futurama!
next 2 robots i'm aiming to build are a 4x4 invert-able ram bot (tornado shape ish ) hopefully should be able to use 8mm thick steel for front back and sides with a 3mm steel base and 5mm aluminum top ......the other is a flipper that will look like the last robot i built just 50mm longer and with a chassis instead of solid steel monocoque structure
had to do some miner mods to scruffy as it couldn't self right and after mannnnnnny attampts  i finally got it to :proud: ......... unfortunately I've had to go the way of the Swiss cheese and put holes in the lifter to keep the weight down and i am also aiming to get a couple of vids of it self righting
and hears the vid

Nice work mate.
it doesn't look as good as it did before but at least it works
OK so I've scraped the first plastic scruffy and used the bit to build scruffy 4X4 so far it has a 3mm thick base and 8mm thick sides, at the moment cant decide what to do with the front i was originally going to weld a bit of 8mm across the front and put some spikes and attachable bits to allow it to get under opponents a bit but i could weld 2 bit of 30x3 flat bar across the front(to reinforce it and have something to boy to) and make interchangeable front ends eg wedge, scoop ......
so if anyone's got any ideas
8mm steel ? Thats going to weigh a freakin' ton :P
I've calculated it in and it came to less than 13kg and i'm only using it for the front, back and sides the base is 3mm steel and the lid will be 5mm ali
best website for working out armour/chassis weights
