Re: Whos doing what to what before the next event......
Jonno started this thread what's he been up to with Sky :uhoh: :uhoh:
I've done a bit more to Gabriel this evening I am re-doing the upper and lower armour and moving the drive wheels back a bit to improve the turning. The ground clearance is about 140mm. Good luck flippers
I will be down Gatwick way next week, starting some training to become an electrician (as well as a gas man) So I will be Part P compliant. 17th edition what ever that lot means :D :D

Re: Whos doing what to what before the next event......
A few minor mods for Weird mAlice, a quad core heatsink and fan onto the wotty box to try to stop the esc overheating and shutting down, and another fan to bolw air across thegas bottle toward the wotty.
And the exhaust valve was broken (literally), I think it was stuck open.

Something I remember my university lecturer saying: Thermo dynamicaly speaking, it's more efficient to exhaust heat from the Heatsink. Just a thought.

I'm stuck in B&B near Gatwick about to be instructed in the advantages of Ring Circuits and RCBOs

Re: Whos doing what to what before the next event......
craig, electricians earn crap money !
how can you fit in a 3 year course is it 1 day a week ?
-
Re: Whos doing what to what before the next event......
If the money is so bad why are you driving a better van than me!!!
It is a course to get me the part P and the 17th edition, so I can go on to do the P.V. solar course then I need the MCS certification for the business,
then I have to get used to going on top of the roofs of peoples houses, then I can get some money back.
For what it's worth I don't think I will be an electrician at the end either it is all about bits of paper so you can do these type of jobs.
Today it was testing ring circuits r1, r2, rn.
I hate being away from home for a whole week :uhoh: :uhoh:

Re: Whos doing what to what before the next event......
Oii Craig, you'd better not be stealing our customers
(although probably quite difficult considering we're in different countries)
Tiled roofs are a doddle, slate roofs are a bit more tricky but common sense and careful footing help a lot. Just pray you don't have to work with rosemary tiles :uhoh:
-
Re: Whos doing what to what before the next event......
Solar in Scotland!!! Now you are pulling my leg
I'm sure I would be too expensive for the customers up there :uhoh:
Do you fit the panels then?
-
Re: Whos doing what to what before the next event......
http://www.solarandwindapplications.com
We do turbines and panels, and you'd think turbines would be more effective in Scotland considering the weather, but all our current income is from solar and all our customers are getting great returns on their systems.
Yeah we deal with every aspect of the installation, from the inverter and electrics to the roof work, panel-fitting and system commissioning. Been trained up in the months I've been here so I can do all aspects of it. Just need to get the parts on the cheap and throw some on my house now
Ventured into England on a few occasions; we've got a unit in South Shields and recently installed two 6kW turbines at two schools in Middlesbrough. But we tend to stick to solar installs in Scotland, so English roofs are all yours :)

Re: Whos doing what to what before the next event......
Too many qualifications nowadays, I'm 17th edition and testing and inspection aswell, niceic which costs an ARM and a leg
I have 1 chap that does the pat testing who is qualified and another who has his pv qualifications, but we need working at heights qualifications aswell :(
you can get a builder to do that though who had done the roof panel installation course ! Oh and mcs certification aswell, the paperwork is now taking far too long.
Soon I will start Christmas lighting which requires minimal tools and no paperwork :) trying to get in the local paper aswell.
-
Re: Whos doing what to what before the next event......
Jamie if you get any cheap panels I will have some aswell !

Re: Whos doing what to what before the next event......

Got offered a job teaching this part time this year......................what does that say about me then!!! (only saving grace is i turned it down )
Paperwork doesn't mean anything anyway, had to deal with a guy last week who thought welding near a set of propane cylinders was a good idea despite what his hot works permit said. Fair enough it turned out the manifold was faulty but thank god for relief valves and persils ability to wash dirty underpants at 30degrees eh . Paperwork really doesn't stop people being idiots.

Re: Whos doing what to what before the next event......
Right time for a rant!!
I'll tell you how rediculous paperwork is. In my role as head of electrical engineering at a medium sized electrical consultancy I sign off the design for around 5000 flats each year (that's about 15% of flats built in london). I do quality control on the testing and inspection procedures of large electrical contractors used on these projects and am quite able to get employment teaching most electrical courses at higher education colleges. We deal a lot with sustainability and have on numerous occasions had to deal with city hall when our larger projects get referred there to outline provisions for pv panels etc. I have previously held the role of HV authorised person for some major clients and multinational consultancies and so on.
Apparently (according to part P) because i haven't ticked all the boxes i am not competant to replace the light fitting in my bathroom. I have all the 17th edition and testing C&G's but because I haven't signed up to a certified scheme (because I don't need to) I am not competant.
On the flip side I have a black CSCS card. This shows I have occupational health and safety training up to NVQ level 4/5. The reality is I have no health and safety training except for doing a five minute test where i had to get 90% with questions like 'what do you do if your mate cuts his leg off a) laugh b) go to lunch and hope someone else sorts it out c) stem the flow of blood call for help and arrange for an ambulance'. Then my boss signed a form saying i was sort of a nice chap and then my nice level 4 NVQ turned up in the post two weeks later. Now if i want to i can claim competence to run a construction site. I have no idea of the safety requirements for scaffolding, tower cranes etc etc. but my ticket says otherwise.
Make sense of that!!
