Storm Vortex used 6mm chain to transmit the power - chain came off perhaps twice in its life. You can use a chain to exellent effect but you need to tension and support it correctly. Pick the right motor and it wont suffer at all
Vortex used the same motor for its entire life, never burnt one out, never damaged it.
During its time (2004) I should also add that it was probably the most powerful feather spinner these was and certainly the most successful of its time - so dont rule out chains, just do it properly.
Youll benefit from almost instant spinup time with the right motor which is a great addition !

how would one go about supporting a chain properly? looks like even my 10mm chain stretches. just a tensioner up underneath it pushing it up?
An idler is a good way of keeping the chain tensioned, but many people (including us) just use a rounded block of nylon pushed under the chain.
