Harley,
Before you build anything please download and read carefully the current FRA build rules, they will answer most of your questions.

and as Tony from bulldog says, get along to one of the many live events around the country so you can see what actualy goes on!
Details of these can be found in the Live Events section of this forum.
Infomation on live events is also available here..

Systems and control GCSE I assume? Well, if your teacher is letting you do it, go for it.
Robot Wars finished a couple of years back, so following those rules would be a little strange when the currently recognised FRA rules (see Geoffs link above) are much more up-to-date and are used by 99% of UK live events. Have a look at the link and youll see that the rules are structured much like the Robot Wars rules.
You shouldnt be using flame throwers anyway for a first build certainly, Id suggest that something that you can work with electronically (along the lines of the Systems and Control requirements) such as an electric actuator powered lifter would be ideal, best keep it as simple as possible.
Best go for a featherweight (12kg). Try to get to a live event sometime to check out how things are done.

the reason i wanted a flame thrower was just to look good. and since my robot will never participate in a real event (unless heavily modified) i never really thought about the rules my teacher just said lay something down for a good basis but i will definatly look at these rules .
btw me and my mate are on a team our name ?

Harley, if you are need of help I got A* in both practical and written areas of the Systems and Control course. Ive also built a robot, so if you need any help on either of those subjects, get in touch with me. :)
/arrogance
Just remember the FRA rules are in place for safety reasons rather than restricting our fun. I would personally advise following them, whether your are building a combat robot or not. If you are going to build a flamethrower system, please research about it thoroughly before going ahead. And remember to ask here first if you are even slightly unsure about something.
Good luck with the project... :)
