Decided to go for a complete spare setup in the end should a motor/gearbox fail. The only things left to order are little bits & pieces such as a new polycarb top, more wire and a new lipo bag, so it's time to start putting everything together at last. I'll be making a start tomorrow and hope to have it up to a rolling chassis (if not more) by the end of the weekend. Beginning to wish I had the new drum to go with all the rest of it but that'll just have to wait til next time.

I attacked mine with a drill and tap today but they still look shiny enough :)

Got a bit more work done on the chassis today. Finished all the principal milling work, which has been the biggest time consumer so far, and while it's a bit dodgy looking in places, it's not bad for a first attempt and much more accurate than anything I've previously built.
Also got all the holes drilled, including the ones for the drum shaft:

This ended up not being as straightforward as I had expected since the biggest size I could drill it out to with my normal drill bits was 13mm, then it was a jump up to 17mm. Lots of coolant and slow-feeding was required. They look a bit rough but they won't be seen so it's not a problem ;)
To cut out the holes for the Banebots gearboxes, I chain drilled the majority of the material off then cleaned it with the mill. Again there are a couple of bits that are mistakes (mostly me turning the axis handle the wrong way and munching into the corners) but overall they're a pretty snug fit:

Next up was drilling the holes for the bolts that will secure the gearboxes in place. The clearance holes for the tops of the cap head screws are right on the edge of the material so it ate into the sides a little on the way down but they'll be hidden by the wheels (so far making all the mistakes in places where they won't be seen :) )

Doesn't really look like much for the amount of time spent on it but the milling is what takes the time. Now that that's done, it should start to go together more quickly. Tomorrow's aims are to get the chassis bolted together, fit the baseplate and start rebuilding the drum assembly.

Milling machines are as expensive as you make them really. Aside from the £500 odd that you get from the bottom of the range. You can spend a huge amount should you want to. Thing is, you really need a solid place to put one. And often you are limited by weight, which then limits the size. I wish I could have a big sod off bridgeport but the things are massive, I'll leave those for when i get a more hardcore build space.
Mine was about £700 and it is around about as small as you can go for featherweight stuff. Nicely made though.
What I find is the killer is not the cost of the machine (which has taken several years of saving for :P) is the cost of tooling and fairly vital accessory. A set of collets is about £100 for the smaller benchtop mills and vices aren't cheap. Endmills and that are also not particularly cheap. Luckily for me I've inherited about 80 or so old imperial sizes from my grandfather. I'm taking the "buy it when I need it" approach atm, meaning I'm currently saving up for a boring head knowing I have a use for it.

Are those side panels sloping inwards slightly towards the drum end or is that my eyes? Looks good so far, too - aluminium seems to be the 'in thing' this year!
Yeah it's my own machine. Got it second-hand last year for £500 but the tooling/clamps necessary for doing basic jobs was another £150 on top of that. Can easily see those costs spiralling as I get more proficient at it and buy fancier cutters.Quote:

Finding it very handy so far, albeit a slow process, partly due to the time to set up the work piece. The travel in each axis is also quite limited in relation to this size of robot - and Drumroll's a small robot at that. But for what I need/will use it for, it's perfectly adequate. As you can see from the pictures, it does help in making higher quality robots and even though I've had a few blips here and there, in the grand scheme of things, they haven't affected the robot in any way. I'd recommend one if you have the cash and space for it. Mine's in a corner of an 8x6 shed so space is tight but workable, however the coolant system is a bit crude (me spraying coolant out a bottle and it running into a drip tray to re-use) because I don't have space to fit a pumped system or the inclination to clean up the workshop every time the coolant sprays everywhere!
A drill press is a cracking tool, adds that extra bit of accuracy and downforce required to get through some materials while keeping the drill bit properly aligned. I got my drill press from B&Q for £60 and it's served me well. It's not as precise as some higher-end models but that was never really something I was aware of too much. It feels a bit clunky now in comparison to the mill and I was contemplating selling it, but decided to keep hold of it now as it still has its uses.Quote:

Got another chunk of work done today, though still tonnes to do. Chassis has been bolted together, baseplate's been fitted, motors have had their pinions pressed on and drum shafts have been cut and drilled/tapped. Had to rig up a ghetto drill press to drill the ends of the drum shafts as there wasn't enough vertical travel in either the drill or mill to accommodate them normally:

And then lifted it up and got rather concerned by the weight. So stuck everything I had to hand on the scales to see what it was sitting at. The result wasn't as bad as I was expecting:

I need to swap the pulley on the drum for the proper, wider one which will add a few grams, still got a few bits of hardware for the drum shaft to take into account, and the brushless ESC isn't in the pile of parts. Will also have wires, internal brackets/supports/anything else and top panel to add on so it will be tight, but I've not taken any weight out of the aluminium yet so I'm confident enough of getting it within the limit.

Hmmm, the only thing that seems to be missing is the weapon ESC, a couple of pulley the belt and the top armour. It should easily be in weight! Cant wait to fight it :-D

Got another weekend of work done. Had hoped to make a start on getting Onyx & Carcinus ready too but things on Drumroll ended up taking longer than expected so they'll have to wait till the next weekend I'm down (which will be the last one before the champs).
So with Drumroll, the mechanical side of things is pretty much done. Got a dividing plate made up for the battery compartment, got the drive motors greased up and run in, top and bottom skids for the front have been made, brushless motor has been mounted, polycarb top panel has been fitted, as has the armour. Two of the triangles that stop the bot resting on its side got smashed off against Galactus last year, so welded some new ones in place. I think I'll remake the armour after this year's event, the current stuff is looking a bit worn, though it will still hold up.

So it's mostly wiring up the electrics left to do, plus make a mount for the link/rx/LED. Then it'll be time for a coat of paint (bye-bye shiny) and, hopefully, some testing. Got new belts on the way for it as some plonker overlooked something in CAD and moved the drum shaft closer to the robot, meaning that the nice, perfectly fitting belts that I used to use are now as loose as Katie Price's undergarments. The new belts look like much better material and are cheaper than the old ones, so I'm just waiting to see what the catch is - probably the wrong tooth profile or something!
Anyway, I managed to wire up a quick test rig to see how it drives with the new motors and ESCs:

Pretty happy with it so far, can see me keeping it on 50-60% rates most of the time but it'll be nice to have the extra speed should I need it.
Seems a much more solid machine, although I miss the more shaped front. Too boxy. Go test it somewhere open so we can all see the full silly speed :)
Also dammit, first we both go for milled aluminium and now pollycarb lids!

Looks great Jamie! Speedy little thing when it needs to be. It is a little boxy but I guess that's just how things roll. Next year a new shiny sharp drum should be on the list!
Yeah it's a bit boxy for my liking too but I just don't have the time this year to hone the overall look. Function over frills. I'll make it more shapely after the champs, want to get some funky, curvy fins welded on the sides and will mill the front ends into a similar shape to the last version. At the very least it will help discern it from 720.

Final weekend, time to get everything (or almost everything) done! Managed to get a few hours in the shed after work today to tackle the wiring side of things. Took a fair bit of time but that's no bad thing, don't want to lose to a dodgy connection. Here's the entire wiring loom for Drumroll:

A lot simpler and much more minimal than I was expecting. Decided to ditch the power distribution bolt method this time; I still like it but its a bit bulky and has greater potential for short circuits. This time the only connections are Deans (all of which will be cable-tied together with exception of the link) and there's a bit of splicing going on. All wires are soldered so hopefully chances of something failing are remote.
Then I threw in a couple of LED strips. Wired in series as they're only rated to 12V, so these aren't as bright as most others due to only receiving 9.25V each, but still plenty visible and much better than the single green LED I've had for the past couple of years:

And finally for today, I picked up a delivery of new belts for the drum. 15mm shorter than the polyurethane ones I used previously, and much tougher:

The tooth profile's a bit different (5M as opposed to T5) so they lose sync after a quarter or so of the pulley circumference, but I put one in place earlier and it's not enough to cause any problems. Need to make a new motor mount though as the belt is too tight to spin freely so I need to move the motor closer to the front. Got 8mm or so free to move it so that should add just enough slack to let it spin yet still keeping it a good fit. Might also let me put the flux rings back on the drive motors.
Plenty going on this weekend so more updates to follow.

As for my other fights, still deciding whether to approach them cautiously or just go all-in-balls-out.
NST is the biggest threat but I can't do any worse than the last time I faced it. Bonx and Satanix will be hard to deal with, could easily push me in the pit, but my drive setup is much nearer their level this year so I just need to make sure my driving's up to scratch. Hatchet is looking good but I've got a 6mm polycarb top and Little Hitter has never got through it so I'm not too worried, Ricochet could be a slippery customer but the drum's only 2mm away from the floor this year so I should be able to catch it with a hit, maybe OOTA if I'm lucky. Killer Bee (changed from Hornet) is an unknown quantity so will just need to take that as it comes.
So I'm not expecting it to be easy, but I'll be disappointed if I don't make it through the qualifiers.
I'm definitely looking forward to fighting this it's probably my favourite featherweight, i doubt very much Hacthet's axe can do much to 6mm polycarb, i've tested it against 11mm and it did pretty much nothing. Looking great though, i seem to have adopted the distribution bolt method (sorry Dave).
