Re: 2012 FRA UK Featherweight Championships by RoboChallenge
Had hoped to be in bed by now, but waiting for the caffeine effects of numerous fizzy drinks to wear off, so just time for a quick message.
Congratulations to Sam for a well deserved win with NST. Even at its first event, when it was the product of quite a rushed build, its levels of reliability were and have been phenomenal, especially considering the forces involved in all its impacts! And it couldn't happen to a nicer guy. Also glad to have a spinner finally win it; hopefully we can push on from here and get them in the top tier more regularly.
Well done to Michael with Explosion and Grant driving Little Hitter for 2nd and 3rd respectively. Unlucky Michael for falling just short again, but at least you weren't a victim of the arena this time. And not forgetting Kenny with Cobalt, a great result for a new robot. It's a bloomin' evil machine and I look forward to seeing it in action again :)
Also, congrats to David on winning the Annihilator. Hope you enjoy it! Loved the insanity of the first round too.
Nice to see so many newcomers to the event this year, but my best newcomer choice would have to be Galactus without a doubt. A formidable weapon and some excellent fights. Even though the teeth were breaking off and were almost non-existent at the end, Guilherme kept it going and got many battles with it. Would be great to see it at a competition again at some time in the future.
And finally, a huge thanks to James, Grant and the rest of the Robo Challenge crew for hosting such a fantastic event! I'm knackered after just three days so god only knows how you guys are still functioning after two events in as many weeks and several days of GSL demos. Your efforts are appreciated by everyone in the community I'm sure, and I can't wait for the next one :)
Pictures are up now: http://s31.photobucket.com/albums/c367/ ... ps%202012/
Will sort out videos within the next week. But now it's time for bed :)

Re: 2012 FRA UK Featherweight Championships by RoboChallenge
We had a great weekend! Although the robots were pants!
Thanks to Kenny, Jamie, Mouldy and Dave in helping us getting Bitza moving. I'll update the build diary with an event break down but one of these years we'll turn up with a robot that can actually move......
Congratulations to Sam for winning, finally a spinner! Most impressed though that you managed to swap back to the old system the night before and then went on to win! Just goes to show how valuable reliability, driving skill and luck of the draw is.
Beaten by the washing machine though.... Although I'm pretty sure it lost drive on one side, judges? :uhoh:
Well done to Explosion for maintaining 2nd and being the only robot from last years top 10 to qualify, to Grant for not only coming 3rd with someone else bot, but also controlling the weapon on the bot that won it! And finally to Kenny for building an awesome new machine and achieving 4th!

Re: 2012 FRA UK Featherweight Championships by RoboChallenge
Thank you to everybody for such an awesome experience. Mr. Weston, you've been a great laugh and a great help. Your generosity is off the scale. Congratulations on the win, too, you deserve it. James and Grant for being equally brilliant; the whole event went brilliantly smoothly, I'm sure that was no accident. And thanks for the aid with our robot, we wouldn't have managed half of what we did without your help. Thanks Paul, for being generally hilarious! Sam for being impossibly friendly and generous (and for despite having potentially the most damaging machine thus far, not showing even a hint of arrogance), and the thanks list goes on. Everybody was lovely, we felt 100% welcome. I feel I've known some of you for years!
Sadly, Tormenta will be retired. After 10 battles we think Tormented would be a more suitable name! Nah, we had great fun, we learned a TON, and getting completely mashed by the later found champ is fine by us.
We will be back next year, hopefully stronger, scarier, and without even so much as a hint of chopping boards!
Thank you!
Edit: we have quite a lot of footage; we will upload over the coming weeks. Anyone who has our fight with NST on video, please link us!

Thank You Robo challenge for such a great event, Cobalt performed better than i ever thought getting to 4th place, it was a real shame NST damaged my motors so i couldn't really move in the 3rd/4th play off, I would like to congratulate sam smith with NST on winning the championship all the years work making it more reliable really payed off! and also dave weston of winning the annihilator championship well done!, Roll on to the next one!

Re: 2012 FRA UK Featherweight Championships by RoboChallenge
I also want to say thank you to everyone for your kind words on the audio intros, and to RoboChallenge for making a system to play them back.
I don't know who it was but they did a very neat job with the software to run it and I believe they were up until quite late Saturday night trying to get it going!
Thumbs up to Explosion for ranking the same as last year, now I don't have to update yours! Thumbs down to Flow and LH entering the comp at the last minute and then going on to do very well since me and Kane had to very quickly make yours up on the day!
Originally I was going to offer the samples up to be bought by the teams to help cover my costs, but given that many people didn't get to hear theirs I'm going to upload a folder with them all so people can take as they please. If you fancy donating some cash for yours then my paypal addy is p.j.belcher@hotmail.co.uk and would be much appreciated.
Does anyone know a neat way to upload a folder of many files for public download?

Re: 2012 FRA UK Featherweight Championships by RoboChallenge
A massive thanks to James, Grant and everyone on the RoboChallenge crew for such a fantastic, and I'm sure what will become a truly memorable event. This has to be up there in one of the best events I've ever been to, even if the most stressful event of the year!
Congratulations to Sam for a deserved win with NST, certainly the best spinner I have ever seen, so very well done. Other congratulations go to Team Big Nipper and Grant for coming 3rd with LH2, Kenny for doing so well for a first event with Cobalt, and Dave for a long deserved piece of success. Not to mention Will for the nasty slot he put in our flipper arm, and Sam again for destroying the shell, spare arm and armour, although I am happy that I atleast came the closest to breaking NST. :) Also a big thanks to Dave Moulds for re-welding our arm after Inertia cracked the welds on Friday.
Very pleased with coming second twice in a row, but gutted that once again we just missed out on winning the whole competition, atleast I didn't get stuck this year! Explosion will be back as soon as possible, hopefully for Aylesbury, and will be coming back next year to hopefully make the final for the third year running, and hopefully win it for a change!

Re: 2012 FRA UK Featherweight Championships by RoboChallenge
Thanks alot to James, Grant and the whole RoboChallenge team for putting on a superb event!
And also thanks to all the roboteers for being so friendly.
We had a really good time and were suprised that laser worked all the time and the only problem was the drill moving in its mount
A massive well done to Michael for coming 2nd with explosion, it was a excellent final, Grant and the big nipper guys with a 3rd from LH2, Kenny with cobalt and most of all Sam with NST for doing superbly and being the first ever spinner to win the UK champs
I have got 70 videos that I am uploadinbg to youtube, so should be done tommorow and I have got 150+ photos of the event and GSL.

Re: 2012 FRA UK Featherweight Championships by RoboChallenge
Many thanks to Grant, James and all the Robo-Challenge crew for putting on this incredible event. The planning and professionism was the highest and showed in the quality of the whole stand and smoothness of the shows. This years champs had the best competition atmosphere of any event I've ever been to.
Thanks to everyone for the kind words on NST, I still can't believe it managed it when I think back to the thursday night before the qualifiers where I had to rebuild it back to the old spec system when I couldn't get the new system working properly.
Having all the main design of machines in the finals shows how well balanced success is in the designs. The top 4 machines were all worthy winners congrats to all:
Explosion - Really impressive throughout the tournement, always a strong competitor put on the best final I've seen in a competition.
Little Hitter - Great machine, always croud pleasing and competitive even years after being built and was very well driven by Grant.
Cobalt - I was especially impressed with Cobalt, building a hydraulic machine in a feather is no easy task and for a new robot, it performed outstanding, even the drive was the best I saw all weekend!
Congrats to Dave for wininng the annihilator, It took on alot of tough robots to get there and came out in good condition and a winner.
As well as the established teams, it was good to see some new teams this years, with some cool new robots, hope to see you guys next year with new and improved machines.
I've got a few vids which i've started uploading, will post some links here soon.

Re: 2012 FRA UK Featherweight Championships by RoboChallenge
I wish I could say all this at the same time as its all equally important but we are only human...
To James, Grant and every one else at Robo-Challenge, thank you so much for an amazing event and brilliant commentary :D The time and effort you put in really showed to make what already is a life time memory.
Congratulations to Sam and NST on; after many years of hard work, taking the UK Crown. A superb machine and a superb driver. It was a privilege to fight you sam and so much fun! I really don't care I left the arena in 7 pieces; it was worth it!
Thanks to David for lending me his tools after I burnt out my weapon motors, and helping me get Conker back into action for the white boards!
Congratulations to Ellis and Tormenta for a brilliant first machine, I wish mine was that well built, and for all the hard work you did to get Tormenta back in one piece after your fight with Inertia XL and NST.
Thank you to all the people who rushed to get Conker through the tech check, I was so worried that I was going to fall before I had even made it into the arena! New receiver required I think...
Conker will definitely be back next year stronger and more dangerous (But without a Nylon 66 base and with a disc that doesn't cause it to buck like a stallion; well disc positioning to be accurate but hey...)
I hope that everyone has a smooth transition back to reality and that you all have a brilliant year until we meet again
Alex
Edit: Does anyone a copy of the league table that lists the final positions of all the robots after the qualifiers?

Finally remembered my login details. :D
So a very well done to Sam on winning the championship and Michael for getting second, also well done to Grant for getting third,Little Hitter took some good hits.Congratulations Dave on winning the Annilihator you deserved it
I really enjoyed driving Tiny Toon against the spinners especially LS4 in the first round of the Annilihator and at least the Robo Challenge arena stood up to it.

Thanks for that Vid Ben, is a cool one to watch. Would be interested to see NST's battle with conker and the one with 540 if anyone has them.
I've uploaded some of the final battles, thanks to Alan, Dave, Kenny and Tom for recording for me (I was so involved in NST not sure if i remembered everyone right...)

Re: 2012 FRA UK Featherweight Championships by RoboChallenge
What an event! Just finished the break down and pack away. Thank you to everyone who supported this event, we really do appreciate it. I think this years UK Championships has surpassed previous years and gave us a final which was more spectacular than any final in Robot Combat history!
The event ran really well thanks to everyone's cooperation. All the teams worked hard to get their machines working reliably for each round so well done, the robots have taken another large step forward this year. some fantastic battles and brilliant new machines.
Congratulations to Sam Smith with NST, the new UK Champion! A fantastic machine and beautifully made! Unfortunately for its opponents it worked perfectly in every one of its battles and put on a stunning show. Very well deserved! Well done to explosion, a very nice machine and can stand up to some serious impacts! Grant drove LH2 really well and thoroughly deserved to be on the podium, well done! Congratulations to David Weston with Satanix for a great drive and winning the Annihilator Comp!
Special mentions must go to Cobalt, a fantastic machine along with Flow! Very impressive machines! Galactus was also an incredible robot especially when you consider it has never been in full combat before, thank you very much for coming to the UK to compete at Robo Challenge, It's very much appreciated. Final thank you to the Big Nipper team for pushing the boundaries of what can be done and exploring innovative new solutions that have never been done before.
Personally I was really pleased to show Venom is still competitive and much more than just a demo bot. It was a real shame to be knocked out of the competition in the way it was (opponent hadn't shown mobility for almost a minute) frustrating but judges decision is final. Thank you very much to Tom Armitage for the Lipos, really transformed the machine.
Once again thank you very much to everyone who entered our event. If there is any one thing to take away it's that diversity is brilliant and you don't need a particular type of weapon to succeed! The top 10 contained a push bot, an axe, spinners, flippers and crushers. The top 4 robots couldn't have been any more different!

Re: 2012 FRA UK Featherweight Championships by RoboChallenge
To Echo Jame's reply - Thank you to everyone who attended over the 3 days for the UK Championships!
This year showed some excellent new robot's and design's such as Cobalt, Flow and LF4 - nice to see that some great new robots are being developed. And to think flow was only on 16-20Bar!
It's difficult to know how well the event has gone for roboteers when your running around tying to organise thing's, but I really hope that it's been another great champs to remember. I'm sure Sam won't forget it anytime soon! A huge well done dude, after wednesday night at our factory burning out some brushless motor's and deciding it needed to be stripped down after all the weeks of work you put into the new system was gutting, and I didnt hold much hope for reliability of the chain drive and motor. The new mods to the base plate for the bar must have made a big improvement to the reliability!
A huge thanks goes to the Big Nipper guy's - they let me borrow LH2 for the week before in yeovil, and then let me take it into full combat to get broken by NST in the later rounds! These guy's are a such good sports and we really appreciate your efforts each year - Thanks.
Tormenta team, you have done an awesome job on your first machine! the effort you guys have gone to come here for 2 events in a row is really impressive, I hope you've learnt alot from your first experience of full combat and look forward to seeing you next year! Sorry for breaking your robot with Satans Mutt in your first ever fight :)

Re: 2012 FRA UK Featherweight Championships by RoboChallenge
First, thank you all for your hospitality!
Congratulations to the organization, was a magnificent event, I Enjoyed entire course,
next year I'll be there again with a Galactus 2.0 :D
Congratulations sam, for the first place and everyone who was on the podium.
I was impressed with the quality of the robots, even with my difficulty in speaking English, managed to speak with many people and share a lot of experience!
Thanks to all who fought against me, every blow received will serve as a foothold for the next version,
During the event I lost my charger (Imax B6) if someone took by mistake during storage, please let me know by PM or talk with James.
I loved meet all and Congratulations to ALL!

Just editing some videos at the moment (it's gonna take a while!) and had to get a snapshot of this. David W has got some from a different angle I think, but the sparks are just brilliant. The moment 4 4 Toon loses its scoop against Inertia XL...

Re: 2012 FRA UK Featherweight Championships by RoboChallenge
Just something I would like to flag up, I felt that (on the saturday at least) there was simply not enough pit space for everyone (especially with lots of stuff left there from the Friday eg. Toolboxes) and was just wondering if it would be possible to change this for next year? I understand space was very limited I really think an extra row of benches was necessary.
I don't want to sound complainy (is that a word?) or start an argument but i think if the event organisers arent made aware of the issue then It can never be fixed :D

They are aware of the situation and they made it clear before the event that it was going to be tight on space. They are allocated a certain amount of floor space and they have to make the best of it. We are lucky to have the amount of room that we have, Floor space in that place is crazy expensive so we have to be happy that we are given.
-
Re: 2012 FRA UK Featherweight Championships by RoboChallenge
It was the same like last year.
And again like last year we couldn't get a loading pass (thanks NEC employees!) were late to the event and all the pit space had gone.
We had to steal a few inches of someone else's table (cheers Max). But to start with we stole someone else's actual table (Cheers John!)
If teams had an allocated space that would be helpful, otherwise everyone just spills over.
