Whiplash
Weight: 100kg
Body Shape: Pentagonal Pyramid with skirts
Dimensions: 100 X 85 X 38
Power: 2 X LEM-130s at 36v powered by 4 X Nicads
Tyres: 4 X Asmaprene Urethane Rubber Tyres

Hows this?
quote:
Weaknesses: NONE AT ALL!False, all pneumatics run out of gas. :proud:
Good otherwise.

Any glaringly obvious problems?
Anyone remember my HW War Drum that never fought? Well, its been reincarnated into the otherweights:
War Drum LW
Shape: Reverse wedge, the rear wedge is angled at 30* and the sides are sloped inwards at 42*
Weight: 28kg
Length: 25cm
Width: 40cm
Height: 15cm
Motivation: 2 vulcanised wheels, internal, but exposed from the top and bottom
Drive: 2 x S28-150s at 24v, 6HP
Batteries: 2 x NiCad battlepacks
Armour: 12mm HDPE, 15mm in key areas
Weaponry:
1) The front drum spins vertically at 2500rpm via an S28-400 magmotor at 24v, driven by a NiCad battlepack. The drum weighs 7kg and is made of 7075 aluminium, it has several cheese grater style titanium teeth placed in a diagonal fashion going around to the drum. It is chain driven and can be reversed if the robot is inverted. When at top speed it can deliver a 26Kj hit. It is 30cm in width, 15cm in diameter
2) Either side of the drum there are two static tungsten tipped spikes, making four in total. These are each 13cm long
3) If for some reason the drum fails the robot can use its wedge to shove opponents around the arena
Speed: 12mph
Turning Circle: 0cm
Ground Clearance: 7mm at front and sides, 0mm at rear due to wedge
Srimech: Invertible, cannot be stranded because of the angled of the sides
Colour: Red drum with gold teeth, green bodywork with purple marking out the frame
War Drum MW
Shape: Full Body Drum, ala Barberous 2
Weight: 54kg
Length: 35cm
Width: 50cm
Height: 15cm
Motivation: 2 x 4mm hardox wheels with unrethane tyres
Drive: 2 x S28-400s at 24v, 9HP
Batteries: 2 x NiCad battlepacks
Armour: 3mm titanium/vanadium alloy
Weaponry:
1) The drum spins upwards at 3000rpm via a Briggs and Stratton E-Tek at 48v, it has seeveral cheese grater style teeth placed in a diagonal fashion around the drum. It weighs 14kg and when spinning at top speed it can deliver a 34Kj hit
Speed: 17mph
Turning Circle: 0
Ground Clearance: 7mm
Srimech: Flipping it has no effect whatsoever
Colour: Red with gold teeth, the wheels are green with a purple stripe
The MW one might be pushing the weight a bit, with a 12kg weapon motor, 5kg of drivetrain (not counting the wheels), about 15kg of batteries to run everything (2 battlepacks wont cut it, theyll last about a minute :P), it isnt looking good to fit the armour, weapon, controllers (serious ones or a 2kg contactor for the etek) and wheels in the rest of it.
Your attention, fine ladies and gentlemen of the vapourboteering community, is requested as that famed vapourbot designer and professional sad person Mr. Joseph McConnell has designed another vapourbot, which is recognisably distinct from his other machines in that it is a wedge shaped flipper.
Presented for your consideration:
Stiltskin
DIMENSIONS: 120 x 95 x 35 cms
SHAPE: Your common or garden wedge, with a rear reverse wedge and slightly sloped sides
COLOUR: Transparent, inner panels are white
DRIVE: 2 LEM130 motors run at 36v from 6 NiCad packs, driving custom built T6 aluminium and urethane rubber tracks, which are laid out within the robot similar to Kater Killer in S3/4.
SPEED: 12mph average, 20mph max
GROUND CLEARANCE: 0 due to the tracks at the sides and the flipper at the front, about 10mm at the rear and under the side armour
ARMOUR: This is slightly complicated: The main drive motors, electronics, and batteries, as well as all the pneumatics gear save for the ram, are located inside a 4mm Hardox monocoque, which is attached to two 5mm Hardox plates that support the tracks and their drive/idler sprockets, with a 3mm titanium sheet on the outer sides of the tracks to protect from spikes and discs.
However, the main body shape of the robot is constructed from 7mm polycarbonate, with a Hardox frame and reinforcing supporting the front flipper, which both gives the robot its shape and acts as a crumple zone to protect the inner components from harm.
For those who hate descriptions: Hardox and titanium inner armour, polycarbonate outer armour with some Hardox on the front.
WEAPONS: A very powerful rear hinged pneumatic flipper in the front wedge, run on 1000psi Nitrogen stored in 2 2kg tanks to give around 10-15 flips in a fight, with a single nonattached 120mm full pressure ram that gives the entire setup a lot of lifting force, most probably in excess of WBC.
There is a small unpowered wheelie bar at the rear of the robot to prevent it flipping itself over.
SRIMECH: The flipper. The angle of the sides should prevent stranding
NOTES: Components and the side and rear polycarb are shock mounted to reduce damage from spinners and rammers and similar nasty devices.
STRENGTHS: Proven design, powerful weapon
WEAKNESSES: Polycarbonate melts at 267 degrees Celsius, so in the event of it coming up against a robot with a microwave oven as its main weapon melting is a possibility.
Seems like a good piece of design work. Impressive work Joey - it looks like a serious contender for the future.
Thank ye, Paul.
...and yes, Dan, it weighs 110kgs. :proud:
A tracked Iron Awe 5 IMO. I like it. :proud:
A tracked Pure Evil: Back To Basics, IMO. I like it. :proud:
You seem like you want to invite it over for tea. :P
Joey: I dunno what vapourbot rules allow, but the FRA rules dont allow Nitrogen anymore.
I would also point out that you would be using liquid CO2 at that pressure, and if it was a real robot, youd get 3 flips before the pipes froze :P
Other than that, I like it :)
FINALLY finished Under Pressure, might as well post it here

TAN with a twist. I like it. :)
thnx Leo :)
looks very cool martijn
You might want to get rid of the invertability and put a srimech on it instead Martijn. By the looks of it, the weapon would be totally useless inverted as the two wedge claws would grip against the opponant, and as a result the crushing claws would never get anywhere near it. Plus your advantage of scooping the opponant would be gone.
well, the wedges can still press with 3,5 tonnes of force right? I considered a srimech, among other things, and may refine this...
The wedges dont look like they come to a point, so youre spreading the crushing force over a larger area, resulting in less damage.
they come to a line much like Terrorhurtz. they do less damage but still make a nice clamper :proud:
Ive aslo considered yet another possibility, will CAD that and post it too
Just an idea:
Name: Robo-Beetle
Shape: A 3-D Semi-Circle
Colour: Shiny Black
Speed: 12 MPH
Weight: 110KG
Armour: 4MM Titanium
Drive: 2 C40-300 Magmotors @ 36V geared for torque
Power: 6 NiCad Battlepacks @ 36V
Locomotion: A pair of small titanium tracks with an Asmaprene/Vulkalon/Urethane coating and imbedded screws
Ground Clearance: 2MM
Turning Circle: 0
Size: 90X90X30
Weaponry: 2 pairs of beetle-like crushing claws, one at the top one at the bottom, they only generate 3 tons at the tip but they can each turn 180 degrees and rip robots in two
Srimech: Invertible, but can use the arms
Strengths: Poweful weapons, Good Pusher
Weaknesses: Slow, Thin Armour
Things wrong with it:
1. You dont need the screws, thats what will kill the grip given by the rubber coating.
2. Why do you need 2 pairs? One pair would certainly be sufficient.
Otherwise, good. :)
I am guessing, correct me if I am wrong Ben, that he wants to clamp down with the top and bottom claws, and then have 1 pair moving in one direction and the second pair in the opposite direction in an attempt to rip the robot apart.
Its a nice idea, but it wont work that way. you would have to generate so much force to achieve that goal that your claws would bend and snap sooner than the opponents armour would buckle under the strain.
Also the 2 mm GC is too low. The coating only has to be worn away by 2 mm to completely ground your machine, plus when youre too low any shrapnel in the arena makes things difficult for you. I consider a 5 mm GC to be the absolute lowest you should go without skirts. Spinners need more because they generate a lot of shrapnel, or at least they should if theyre designed well:proud:
Also do you intend for the 2 pairs of claws move away from each other in horizontal or vertical motion? AKA one pair moves to the left and another koves to the right OR one pair moves up and the other... down?
Im guessing the latter since you say the claws help selfrighting, I fail to see how your bot is invertible then though, I guess with 3d semi-circle you mean a sphere cut in halve?
I think something like this.
http://www.insaneclown.nl/images/robobeetle.jpghttp://www.insaneclown.nl/images/robobeetle.jpg
in that picture the claws wouldnt be able to turn 180 degrees like the stats say leo :)
Once they are closed he could.
The other option would be
http://www.insaneclown.nl/images/robobeetle2.jpghttp://www.insaneclown.nl/images/robobeetle2.jpg
But then you would lose a lot of space inside and it would not be invertable.
I think the first option is right and remain wondering why it can use the claws as a srimech.
Actually Ben Ive been playing around with ideas like this but the thruth is youd tear your weapon apart rather than your opponent, I most likely. Ive never been able to find a way around this.
Random note; Im busy on Robo-Hedgehog but still dont really understand the curved teeth. Are they like Mutes and placed on top of the robot? If so then your robot would not be invertible (without the axe) like you stated.
Mobile Failure
Shape - Box wedge
Colour - Pale purple
Weight - 100kg
Motors - Those LEM130s running on 36 volts
Wheels - 4 go-kart style wheels
Speed - 16mph
Clearance - the wedge has no clearance, and the sides have 3mm titanium skirts so its 0 there too. Without skirts theres 5mm of clearance
Armour - 6mm titanium and for the bottom its 6mm polycarbonate
Dimensions - 105cm x 75cm x 20cm
Weapons - A titanium axe, using a rack-and-pinion mechanism, powered by 2 2kg CO2 tanks and fed off a 110mm x 20mm pneumatic ram...whew!
Srimech - The axe!
Good? Bad?
Hi Tracy,
Two things.
20cm high is very low. specially if you want to put pnuematics in there. make it a little higher please, like 30cm or so.
Either your ram is very wide and very short (4 wide, 0.7 short), or very narrow and still a bit short (0.7 wide and 4 short). Either way not very suitable for an axe. Also at what pressure will you be operating the axe?
As a reference, this is my axe:
120mm bore (wide), 200mm stroke (long), running on CO2 at 16 bar. That gives me 1800kg of force on the ram when it pushes, and 1700kg on the return. That is because there is the rack that slides in and out the ram that takes up space where on the other side there is gas. So one end of the ram is less powerful than the other. On the other hand it fills more quickly since it needs less gas.
Hope this helps.
Thanks Leo. It did indeed help.

Are the edits acceptable? :)
Not bad at all, Tracy. :)
You might want to run the axe at a higher pressure, 1000 PSI would qaudruple the damage
Ben, the axe would explode at that pressure. And CO2 doesnt run at 1000psi anyway.

I smell burnt motors...C40s cant run at that voltage.
Weaponry: 2 pairs of horizontal claws, one above the other, one pair moves to the left, one to the right, this should hopefully tears large chunks off opponents
Uh...exactly HOW do they move to the left and right. And I still say having two pairs of claws is kinda pointless, and overweight. :P
