There were a few shocks, neither Beauties made a semi final despite looking extremely strong in the qualifying rounds, the 2010 UK Champion struggled more than anticipated against a very competitive opposition and the top 10 robots were a fantastic blend of flippers & spinners which was a great balance. Once the top ten were announced it was extremely difficult to guess who would win.
A few robots need a special mention for their efforts. Tiny Toon did a great job of winning the Annihilator in style well done guys. LS4 was extremely powerful and put on a spectacular show. Incredibly coming 4th in the competition was a massive leap for spinners. NST also put on a fantastic display of strength and reliability. Inertia XT for a brand new robot walked over beauty 2 and could have gone all the way, brilliant effort from Team Shock. Explosion managed to flip themselves out of the arena, had some of the hardest opponents, won the 6 robot play off and incredibly came 2nd over all which was very well deserved. Definitely will be a favourite for next year. And finally LF3 the new 2011 UK Champion and very well deserved. Its been long over due but the Big Nipper team are finally lifting the trophy after years of excellent work and engineering. A big congratulations very well deserved!
I would also like to say thank you to our Judges Andy, Tom and Kane for working with us for the week and had to make some difficult decisions. Thank you guys
Once again thank you very much everyone and we will keep your eyes peeled for us on the Gadget Show!

We are revisiting the judging rules specifically to look at situations like this. Furthermore we will be forming specific rules for different competition formats such as the Annihilator.Quote:

WHY IS SERAPH NOT GOING TO ANY MORE ROBOCHALLENGE EVENTS?
i thought that my post kinda covered that topic ben
just wanted him to see it lol
Team Saint isn't throwing dolly out of the pram :uhoh:
It is Because there is talk on the thread about judging decisions and rules about wheels in pits and stuff.
I had decided not to run Seraph or the new Tron again,
(as the arena is a bit small for them and the sides are too low)
just after the event anyway, and I would not like to cause any problems with the rules in future,
so I thought I would say they were not going to Robo Challenge events again, that way it should simplify the rules
for the future.
I will probably take the old Tron along as that type (A Box on Wheels) of robot is at home in the smaller arena. And we are back to
paper, rock scissors.
Box, Flipper Spinners
Hope that clears it up I certainly don't have any issues with Robo Challenge or anyone else :proud: :proud: :proud:
Plainly it should just be 'unable to get out of pit for 30 seconds then eliminated'. If a machine is able to climb out and the fight's not ended why not let it.. two pennies
No need to quit to make the rules simpler (it doesn't).
Proposals for revisions to the judging rules will be published in the next couple of weeks.
Should bot's be built to the rules ?
Should the rules be altered for the bot's?
Should bot's be built to suit the arena?
Should the arena be changed to suit different bot's?
Could go round in circles.
Higher arena walls means more advantage for non flippers and disadvantage for flippers people can argue that it is also not fair? If you build a bot with the serious intention of winning, making it not suitable for the arena is down to the builders design choice which in my opinion should not really affect arena design. Like Craig said the arena is a bit small for them and the sides are too low. My view without causing offence is that to make the bot's a certain size is the builders choice.
Like it or not the most successful robots have always been pushers, flippers & spinners. You only have to look at all the different robot competitions all round the world and the top ranking bot's to see this. There are also a great number of arena designs which have not altered this out come. Each weapon type has the potential to win but its how it's designed and controlled which ultimately decides the outcome.
Ever since I first started following Robot Wars there as been constant discussions and some arguments to what is fair. We've talked about limiting weapon power, arena design, limiting costs and much more. But these are usually only to suit a minority of builders at the disadvantage of a larger majority of the community.
This is the first and maybe last time I will comment like this as I try not to upset people and stay pretty neutral within the community. I understand that because I don't have much time to build and appear at events any more, that people may feel that my opinion may not count. But I could not prevent myself on this occasion.
Just also like to say sorry to Robo Challenge for hijacking your thread. Looks like you put on a great event and a excellent show for builders to come and battle there creations. Well done.
It says nothing in the build rules about how wide the wheels can be apart (I think)
To quote myself a little more clearly
I had decided not to run Seraph or the new Tron again, just after the event anyway,
I mentioned not running them because the rules were being looked at by Kane.

In many ways I agree with Chris both Seraph and New Tron were designed for the big arenas, Robo Challenges arena is great but they only put on one or two events per year.
What I was trying to avoid is exactly what has happened A long and protracted explanation on what first appeared a simple decision By removing the only robot that can guarantee to get out of Robo challenges pit, the rules can be made simpler and interpreted easier. As I can't imagine anyone daft enough to make A joke like Seraph. especially after all this.
In an attempt to stop any more discussion on the matter I will not post on here again. Just to say thanks to Robo Challenge for putting on a great event congrats to all the winners and Team Saint Loves You All.
yey! Feeling the loves
I think the rule does still need clarification though as there are other machines that if placed in the pit could get themselves out (in theory), some of the powerful flippers jump to mind. I think it's always good to get a bit of discussion going on the ins and outs of rules.
I respect your decision but the champs are going to be a damn site duller without Seraph & Tron 2.
Mind you, don't stop just for arguing & rule changing. If it wasn't this, it'd be the led colour again.
Oh & I would be one to make a joke like Seraph but I doubt I'd enter it into the champs .
Hi everyone,
Here is my two penceworth on the judging issue. Although it didnt happen this year, at the last years UK champs LIttle Spinner 4 left the arena on at least 3 different occasions. On two of those 3 occasions the robot that Little Spinner had hit were dead before Little Spinner left the arena. In at least one case the other robot could only have been classed as a cluster bot after the hit, but Little Spinner was said to have lost all its fights although the robots that it hit were dead before it actually left the arena. As I understand the rules if a robot is dead it has lost. Who lost first? The robot that is left in the arena dead or the robot that could be placed back in the arena and still run?
:?: :?
I think it would be a shame not to see Seraph at any future events, but I suppose its your decision. It might be manic to watch, but it is something different and on youtube when watching videos that Seraph is involved in it is always the robot you notice first and it would be a shame if that was lost, even if just for robot challenge.
If you are making the decision for yourself that is one thing, but don't let the rules and arena layouts prevent you from displaying robots that are possibly the most unique and noticable around at the moment.
Glyn:
Since I was in one of those fights, I'd make the point that robots are usually counted out for 30/10 seconds, because robots can lose control for a number of reasons and get it back. A robot that has left the arena and clearly has no means to continue or regain mobility IN the arena, then its out by knockout. Until we see a robot that can get back in the arena, thats the way it is.
BTW, In my fight with you, you hit the outer wall before I hit the inner wall, my link came out when I hit the inner wall, so I was still mobile as you exited.
Gary is absolutely right, It is only a good thing if details of the rules are clarified and everyones expectation is aligned before competitions/decisions are made. The discussion will result in general agreement in some of the details beforehand and higher chance of acceptance of the result after a decision.
Craig, I hope that you don't let this topic influence which machines you enter to an event. I don't believe anyone wants to make an example of any particular machine/design. The pit is only one of the many areas which need clarification. I think the required clarification extends quite broadly across all types of machines. A very good example there Glyn a scenario that would be interesting to discuss.
Knowing exactly how something will be judged does actually affect our strategy in the arena so worth knowing on a competitiveness front.
Thanks Kane for taking the step forward to prepare a document.
Thats a cool vid Tom.... I know you posted it ages ago but was tied up with heavies for a while.
Anyone got the big melee from the Sat night?
Possibly/probably. I think whenever I saw NST or any other nasty spinner going in to the arena I tried to get the fight on film. I've been up in the remote wilderness of the Scottish Highlands for the past few days so didn't get a chance to start sorting out footage, but I've now got a four-day weekend coming up so all my vids will be up in a couple of days.Quote:

After watching that boner v beauty fight again, I should have had that hands down
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sBIgipNH2WM heres that melee you orderd Mr Cairns :)
I don't suppose anyone has the videos of Inertia's spinner demos or Whirlwinds whiteboard when it clears the arena??
thanks for that dave :)
Some videos of the event;

Some are still currently uploading.
Included are the qualifier between Bitza and LS4, the final whiteboard frenzy, the Play Offs and the whiteboard where LF3 managed to get itself stuck on the arena side wall!
Enjoy!
I've started uploading my videos - it's a slow but steady process!
Don't suppose anyone got that fight between Buzzbar and Alpha? Biggest impact EVAARRRR!!!
My videos from the Friday are up:

Saturday and Sunday will follow tomorrow, provided it doesn't take too long.
Thanks for all the vids guys.
I almost forgot about that battle between alpha and Buzzbar. Someone must of caught that on camera?
don't think they did. I remember mouldy asking if anyone got it on film and the answer was a resounding no
i went through all that for nothing then
