just a little thing here ...failing to find some M5 grub screw bolts i have to come up with another idea . I was thinking would it be possible to lathe the head bit off a m5 slot head contersunk bolt ? This way i can still get the Bolt in the drill and get it out using a screwdriver

Could have posted this in the Using Gold Motors section but decided on here.
What Im wondering is: Is there much difference between the gold motors (or even the silver versions of them) and the drill motors if theyre taken out of the drill gearbox - are the golds more powerful, more efficient etc or are they quite similar?

Just spotted this thread! Ive just been down to my local engineering firm and they are adapting a 100mm threaded 16mm round bar (studding), putting a blind hole in one end of it, tapping this hole inside plus having an extra sleeve/collar to help support the bar onto the motor shaft. My plan is the to be able to secure wheels to it afterwards with locknuts. Im having ten made to start with at £5 each. Ill probably araldite the bars to my Argos 18v Challenge drill motors. Ill put a pic on my profile next week.
Re gold motors vs drill motors. The golds are much much more powerful! Even the 24v Silver motors I flog for £5 have more power than drill motors. We use drill motors cos they have the gearbox already and they are cheap.

Ah, i didnt realize there was such a comparison of size between the two - that puts it into perspective a bit. Thanks for the responses.

We use the 30V NuTool drill motors which are much better and from our expereance are comparable to Gold Motors but are not as cheap as the 18V ones. They have a nice spline that the chuck fits into and removing this from the chuck and putting in in a wheel allows a very easy mounting of the wheel. The output speed of the gearbox is 1200rpm (I think).

hey mark, im really interested in those nutool drills, just wondering if you would have a picture of them and the gearbox itself?
and also where abouts can one buy them (off the net if preferable)? im started to get real sick of snapping gearbox pins :)

Glen, I dont have any pictures of the ones we use but if you are at Magna you can look at them there.
http://www.cpc.co.ukhttp://www.cpc.co.uk sell them. I Think its this one:
http://cpc.farnell.com/jsp/endecaSearch/partDetail.jsp?SKU=TL05789&N=401http://cpc.farnell.com/jsp/endecaSea...=TL05789&N=401
but no picture on thier web site. You can also get them from B&Q. Note their 36V version is alot cheaper (price these used to be) and looks the same with a bigger battery, but weve not tried them yet, you also get a 1.7Ah battery (2 with B&Q) and a 1 hour fast charger. They also have 5 gears on the last stage not 3.
