Gravity 5
also moved out of competitors :)
I've started with gathering all of the parts I still had :
http://www.wjweb.nl/gravity5/IMAGE_125.jpg
next, piling up the parts to see what shape the robot should be :
http://www.wjweb.nl/gravity5/IMAGE_129.jpg
was thinking about making G5 a little extreme :
http://www.wjweb.nl/gravity5/IMAGE_130.jpg
But I didn't :)
Changed the way I normally build, this time I started with a hardox baseplate, 460x800mm. Fitted the gearboxes + motors and gave the ram + buffertanks a place
http://www.wjweb.nl/gravity5/IMAGE_142.jpg
Made a battery box, and sort of laid out the position of the co2 bottles :

Re: Gravity 5
Loving it! Is there an estimated completion time you can make? :D
-
Re: Gravity 5
No idea when it's finished :)
Some more work done :
Made a bottle cradle, that's removable so I can get to the batteries and the speedcontroller beneath the bottles :

and how it fits on the robot :
http://www.wjweb.nl/gravity5/IMAGE_183.jpg
and with the bottles in place :

Re: Gravity 5
i like the bottle tray idea. Pretty clever.
-
Re: Gravity 5
Neat. :) Have to agree with Leo, the bottle tray is pretty spiffy.
-
Re: Gravity 5
aaaand just ordered a bunch of anderson links and cables and connectors for the wiring of G5 :)

Re: Gravity 5

Re: Gravity 5
love your style of construction if I made a flipper I'd make it in the same way
-
Re: Gravity 5
Normally I make a box-section frame first, and then add armor, but this time I thought I'd try it this way :)
-
Re: Gravity 5
its grungineering at its best, almost looks like you have an idea of what you want to build but not drawn it (sorry not ment to sound like a bad thing if it does) I wish I built my robots like that (heavyweight anyway) it creates a unique look keep it up, its a great start
-
Re: Gravity 5
Every robot i have ever built has had no drawings or plans or cad drawings. Idea in my head and get the welder out. Job done
-
Re: Gravity 5
Almost the same with me, its piling up the parts and then start welding.
This one took a bit more time though, with laying out the parts like this and trying different layouts. This kind of building DOES make sure everything fits though ;)
-
Re: Gravity 5
its a great way to build, beats calculating deflection angles, angular velocity, kinetic energy, mechanical stress points and traction requirements, only for it at some point to need repairing on the spot.
or maybe i should learn to make better robots
I like the way its going, keep posting pics WJ

Re: Gravity 5
updates !!!
fitted the rear hinges, and the first few centimeters of the flipper arm.
Also made a lid for the rear side of the bot.

Re: Gravity 5
my dad builds the same was as u and shane (no computer drawings) must be all ur old ages - sayin that my dads the big 50 next xmas day HA very old
WJ, u need a bigger ram :)
-
Re: Gravity 5
I just love the fact that there's a strip of masking tape going across the top of the ram, as if it will stop 1000kg or more of thrust should the ram accidentaly fire :P
I know that's not what it's actually for but it just quite funny :)
-
Re: Gravity 5
more grungineering ;)
looks evil already ! I think its a bit too high, but you just can't fit a 20cm ram + a 60x30x3mm box section flipper arm + a sloped robot inside a low or short profile :(
but heres the pics :)

Re: Gravity 5
i best get some work done you are beating me in the build diary wars mate
-
Re: Gravity 5
I did exactly the same thing with the arm on Apocalypse, but im planning to revert to the original design as it made the ratio to the pivot wrong so the arm was too short. I would go longer, but then my system isn't as refined as yours will be im sure.
-
Re: Gravity 5
you calling this refined ? :)
If it doesn't work, making a new flipper arm wont be the end of the world.
Also, the ram currently has an effective stroke of 165mm, and the pivot:arm ratio is about 1:3, and that worked pretty good on my previous robot. Might not be as spectacular, so no robots getting stuck in the roof of the arena, but it will still tip them over again and again and again :)

Re: Gravity 5
its looking pretty good, im liking it
sticking with the go kart wheels then?
-
Re: Gravity 5
yeah, the gearboxes are for that size wheels, so sticking with it.
Also, pneumatic tires take alot of the crashes etc out of the chassis...
-
Re: Gravity 5
Too sweet for words, WJ. :D
-
Re: Gravity 5
Can't wait to see it self right !
-
Re: Gravity 5
It should pivot around the back end because of the weight, but I don't know before I try :)
-
Re: Gravity 5
I can see it beating mute's record !!!!
-
Re: Gravity 5
ok, G5 back on the workbench again, with a little less then 4 weeks to go before RIAT :)

Because of all the enthousiastic replies another update :
started on the electronics

and, the lamps light up, so it seems to be working ;)

OMG the size of that ram

woohoo indeed
That thing is going to be killer. Nice job! :D

Re: Gravity 5
So how many times are you going to launch opposing robots into the roof, William?

Re: Gravity 5
it's not that strong i think, we'll see ;)
