4/5th October 2008 Roaming Robots Mountbatten Centre, Portsmouth
Round 1 of the 2008 Winter Tour this year begins at the Mountbatten centre in Portsmouth. 5 years along the line and this event is just as popular as the first time we attended.
We€™re sure 2008 will be equally as good, if not bigger and better then before as the winter tour championship is always hard fought for !!
Tickets are on sale and roboteers can sign up early 2008!

yep, no worries.
Weve got a lot of work to do in the RR camp over the summer.
Once we get the other 3 teams up and running with haven next week, then well be launching the winter tour officially and sign ups will be open.
Portsmouth is going to certainly shake up a few things :)

Ok time for an update of plans for this event.
Over the summer the RR arena / shows are having a revamp, been threatening it for a while, but its time !!
I think its time for a bit of a shake up to the way events run, and fights are won.
The arena along with having a new outer section / makrolon is also changing in style.
No more 10 second fights, because two of the main arena side walls are not as low as they used to be, they are now 2m high, so robots wont be flipped out on all sides of the arena. :)
However.... on the two sides where robots can be flipped out.... even if you are out of the arena, your not out.... you will end up on a platform on which we will be giving you 30 seconds to drive back into the arena.... yes drive back into the arena :)
You will have 2 chances... on the 3rd oota, you will be OUT !!!
what else.....
well looks like you also need to start fireproofing your robots.... flames are coming very very soon thanks to our lighting and effects company who are currently working with Mcfly with lots of flames !!!
Lots more info to come including prize funds / appearance fees and other stuff .... watch this space.
Of course ive posted it here to get peoples reactions, and opinions, but i hope you will agree with me, it will both spice the fights up, and add a lot more excitement to our shows !!

Do you have a platform where I get 30 seconds to drive out of the pit? :proud:
-
4/5th October 2008 - Roaming Robots - Mountbatten Centre, Po
i will be the first fight of the show so i can be the first person to flip someone out and let them drive up but then there going straight back out again and then there out :)
-
4/5th October 2008 - Roaming Robots - Mountbatten Centre, Po
Oh brilliant flames+ Block of Wood=????
Sounds go though the ramps etc, perphaps the flippers wont as often as they do from now on :)

So, flip out drive up ramp, bloody iron awe waiting at the top to drive into side and flip us straight back out again?
Is there an exclusion zone at the top of the ramp back into the arena to stop this? Otherwise it sort of defeats the objective of prolonging the fights.
Also, you gonna give us a running track around the arena so we can see the robot to drive up said ramp when the robot dissapears over the other side and we cant see it:mrgreen:

Any idea if the flames will be in place for Portsmouth?

Im not so sure about this ramp idea getting robots back into the area. I like the idea of making half the arena walls higher to help stop out of the arenas happening though. Gets boring otherwise.
And i beleive the flames are coming for Portsmouth Andy. :proud:
Winter Tour section on the site goes live late next week.
We will also be filming our behind the scenes DVD at Portsmouth and may wish to do some interviews with the teams, how your robots are built and so on,, tips for new commers and all sorts. So make sure your robots are all painted nicely and the wires inside your bots are neat. HAHA!

no were going to blindfold you and let you use the force to get back in !! :)
I am still working out final logisitics of how it will work... you will have a set drivers position so you will see what your doing. Just getting peoples opinions before i start hacking at the arena doors.
Flames.... quite possibly !
-
4/5th October 2008 - Roaming Robots - Mountbatten Centre, Po
there wont be a ramp as such. i believe the arena will be extended about a meter and half on 2 sides which will be the same level. so imagine where your robot hits the floor, instead it will just be the other side of the barrier and you will be able to drive back in while other robot gets to the wating area so no iron awe wont be waiting for you. thats what i gather anyway i am sure jonno wll put me right if i am wrong. :) i think its a fantastic idea and will change the way we fight.
-
4/5th October 2008 - Roaming Robots - Mountbatten Centre, Po
yes correct, current plans are not to have a ramp, but to have an automatic arena door and a loading pen !!!
Oh we also need some volunteers for uneven arena floor trials.
There will be a few raised sections retro fitted on sunday morning for trials.
They will be 12mm high and at 45 degrees at the joins.
Anyone up for it ?

Hi Jonno I like the sound of the new arena. We are hoping to make our debut at this event. The new tanglefoot is actually designed for a rise of about 15mm. More if necessary so am really looking forward to this one. Since last year the build has been very slow due to work commitments. I have just kept going with it and slowly made progress. It will have a low pressure flipper. Nothing that is going to put anything in orbit but enough to give us a fighting chance. Hope to see you all at this event. Chris

Hi everyone, Just really looking forward to getting to some events. It has not been because of lack of enthusiasm. Just not enough time. I dont want to arrive with a robot that is not finished. I have all the components, Drive system mostly assembled. Just have not got the armour yet. Going to see how much weight is left before putting on the armour. I was hoping to be at the UK champs this ear but just could not finish the bot in time. I was wondering where everyone usually stays for this event?
