AJWars: A New Era...
OK then! I€™ve been chatting to people recently and €˜behind the scenes€™ I believe that we all really want to come down from these crazy uber-bots and get back down to basics. Basically, this tournament it sort of a launch pad to try and influence writers and designers to take a step down from the Hardox armoured, LEMCO drive train, walking full body spinners. Lets get back to the simple €œyou build it - I€™ll believe it€ mentality with some cool wedges, MagMotor drive trains, Titanium armoured with a nice pneumatic flipper etc.
It€™s apparent people are running out of ideas, and tournaments are stumbling a bit with the same thing being entered over and over again. Its time to get creative and see what we can produce again.
The rules of this tournament are the same as usual, however I€™m looking for realism, I€™m looking for some cool ideas, I€™m looking to step down from the €œlets build a tank to stop MDU€ days. If anything is too over the top, it won€™t be allowed to compete. That doesn€™t mean to say you have to get designing a brand new robot, I think it would be interesting to see a few people also possibly €˜de-evolutionising€™ their current bots to fit the bill.
All I€™m looking for is maybe 8 people to enter one vapour bot each, real robots are obviously not permitted as they kind of defeat the object.
This is a call for everyone to bring FanFic back to its glory days! Lets have some variation, some interesting designs, back to basics. Maybe then we can influence the big tournaments to follow along and we can have some fun again.
Hope this generates some interest! :)

AJWars: A New Era...
B2B (Back 2 Basics)
Weight- 100.6kg
Dimensions- L-75cm W-54cm H- 36.5cm
Speed- 8.5mph/ 3.8 m/s. This however still gives excellent acceleration and the speed of the hits will help us do the Tornado thing:proud:
Shape- Normal Wedge, with rollbars on the back panel made from welded 1cm titanium.
Locomotion- 2 x 270mm diameter wheels with custom cut treads from an old adapted Go-Kart
Ground Clearance- 0 at front, 0 underneath hinged skirts at sides, 4mm underneath skirts and at back.
Turning Circle-0
Power- 2 x 36V Dustin Motors running off 3 x 24V TMC batteries weighing a total of 9kg for the batteries plus 2.6kg for the motors (Lightweight or what:proud:). It gives a total (Presuming efficiency is at maximum) of 4.42BHp. Not the best shover, but with the wedge shaped, the idea will be that before pushing you scoop the wheels off the ground.
Armour- 7mm Titanium/Vanadium Alloy all around weighing a total of 28.4940747kg for the whole body. The titanium bars on the back weigh a total of about 8.4kg.
Chassis- The chassis is made of 1cm aluminium bars, and weighs around 12kg.
Weapon 1- The weapon is a Helium powered flipper, with 2 x 3kg helium rams, capable of firing about 40 times within the course of a fight, and despite running off just 400psi, is easily capable of flipping 250kg. The rams in total, plus gas, and bottles etc. weighs around 16kg and the actual flipper is made out of 4mm Titanium/Vanadium alloy and is around two-thirds the width of the body and goes up the whole wedge. It weighs 5.022kg.
Weapon 2- the bottom of the front wedge is an entirely detachable wedge made of 1cm aluminium. It€™s been designed to be heavy enough to prevent the front wheelying when driving, and therefore means that it should be simple to flip any robots over. It covers about 10cm of the wedge, and is more than capable of resisting attacks. It€™s been designed well and uses the force of gravity and balance to keep it down, whilst only weighing 3.288384kg in total.
Removable Link Position- In a hole with a swinging flap about 10cm into the back panel, but you have to get past the rollbars to get to it.
Srimech- The flipper acts as a self-righter, and will always land on his wheels thanks to the rollbars on the back, once we self-right. The only time this won€™t work is if we can€™t get enough pressure in the ram to fire us over.
Strengths- Powerful, long-lasting weaponry. Manouvreable. Flipper should never fail to slide underneath.
Weaknesses- Not the best pusher in a straight shoving battle.
Weight Distribution-
Chassis- 12kg
Armour- 37kg
Batteries- 9kg
Motors- 2.6kg
Locomotion- 9kg
Weapons- 7kg
Weapon Power-16kg
Electronics-8kg
TOTAL- 100.6kg

AJWars: A New Era...
Ill try and throw something together... or I might go for one of my more obscure bots.
-
AJWars: A New Era...
Hows about I enter Die-Ceratops Re-Invertus? Check the C+B2 Tournament for stats.
-
AJWars: A New Era...
Great, thanks for the positive feedback everyone! :)
1) Aaron - Reserved
2) Martijn - Reserved
3) Willow - Back 2 Basics
4) Kody - Dysfunctional 2.0
5) Alex - Reserved
6) Chris - Die-Ceratops Re-Invertus
7) ?
8) ?
Sorry I was a bit brief on the rules, by the usual I meant FRA Rules. The structure of the tournament will be simple one-on-one knockouts. Tim, I€™m afraid I cannot accept stats in the FRW format so at the moment you don€™t have a place. Kody, a picture of Dysfunctional would be handy please. And for Chris, shall I base your drive train upon S28-400 MagMotors? Otherwise everything is going great, thanks all!
-
AJWars: A New Era...
Can you? Ive never really understood the technical details for a while now. Thats the main reason why I thought removing the bit in the real Robot Wars where the teams were introducing their robots was a bad idea.
I believe there should be a picture of DC-RI in the C&B2 tournament as well, somewhere.

AJWars: A New Era...
@Chris: http://magmotor.com/brushed/brushed.htmlhttp://magmotor.com/brushed/brushed.html Give you all the information you need to know about Magmotors :-) If you want less detailed, go here: http://www.robotmarketplace.com/marketplace_magmotors.htmlhttp://www.robotmarketplace.com/mark...magmotors.html
Plenty of information on the interjet
Also, 3 x 12v batteries? Are you running 3 in series for 36v? or 3 in parallel for 12v?
@Matty: 2 x 36V Dustin Motors running off 3 x 24V TMC batteries Can you explain this a bit, something Im sure Ive asked you before, but cant remember. Are the motors run at 24v or 36v? If your running 36v, Im wondering how you get it from 24v batteries. If your ran the 24v batteries in parallel, you would have 24v, if in series, you would have 72v... Which is it? Got a link to the batteries? I might be able to find a solution for you.
Slightly off topic. Now that I have myself a wonderous server with some php/mysql, I might look at finally working on that rough fanfic bot designer tool I started around 2004...
-
AJWars: A New Era...
ah, stuff it, change it 3 x 12V. The batteries are 2 kilos lighter each... add a couple of extra layers of paint.

Sounds fun! :)
Thanks for clearing things up guys, hopefully means Ill be able to write some semi-decent battles that way too.

AJWars: A New Era...
Could someone suggest me a good a good motor/battery etc setup for a true FBS (ie one that turn on its wheels) I never was much good with technical stuff...

AJWars: A New Era...
Back for their comeback tour:

A couple of big updates: the armour for each is now 5mm Ti and the power now comes from 2 x Dewalt 18v batteries at 24v. Theyre tougher, pushier and raring to pass the audition!
-
AJWars: A New Era...
Its Dysfunction, not Dysfunctional. And I cant get a pic of it at the moment as my computer is not working. *is typing this from school* :lame:
If someone could CAD it for me, that would be nice. Im kinda of suffering at the moment.

A picture of Dysfunction 2.0 would still be handy, anything will do. Alex, for this tournament 3x (presuming thats how many wheels you have) C40-500 MagMotors at 36v might be good, but you shall have to check it out with someone...
Just one more place to fill and I still need entries from Aaron, Martijn and Alex. I was hoping to start the tournament the start of the week if possible, so get a move on. Im sure all of us dont want yet another tournament put off for about 8 weeks, which is what it will be if I cant start on Monday most likely. :P

AJWars: A New Era...
Name: Trojan
Colour: Natural colour of the materials - so realisitcally grey/metallic
Shape: Cylindrical (like tengu, but with a greater upper taper)
Weight: 100kg
Power: 3 x C40-500 MagMotors at 36v
Wheels: about 20cm diamter and 4cm wide, cast aluminium with a rubber tread with small studs extruding 1mm from that for traction
Weapons: A true full body spinner - ie. spins on its wheels to get the full mass behind it, however, the blades are somewhat unusual - they are shaped so that in one direction it forms a wedge that skims just above the floor and curls upwards which should hopefully get beneath a robot and turn it over. On the back of these are blunt stainless steel blocks for a more traditional usage of its full body spinner power. Essentially if it spins oen way it is a flipper, the other it is a damaging FBS. The twisting motion of the wedges and their rigidity should help it get beneath even very low robots.
Turning Circle: 0m
Armour: 6mm kelvar over 3mm titanium.
Strengths: Tough and various means of attack.
Weaknesses: Has to be able to spin to do much.
Srimech: A longer version of the hynodisc srimech inset into the top perpendicular to the blades. Essentially a trimmed down tengu srimech.
I have no idea if that will even work - I can do a render if wanted.
-
AJWars: A New Era...
Great, thanks everyone!
1) Aaron - Reserved
2) Martijn - Liar
3) Willow - Back 2 Basics
4) Kody - Dysfunction 2.0
5) Alex - Trojan
6) Chris - Die-Ceratops Re-Invertus
7) Steve - The Botles Reunited
8) Dave - Reserved
Martijn, just one thing, Ill need to tone the flipper down from 1000psi to 750psi under the rules - if thats ok.
Dave, is http://farr.proboards21.comhttp://farr.proboards21.com what you are looking for?
Alex, am I right in thinking this moves around while spinning as a translational spinner? Otherwise thats great.
Just Aaron and Daves robots needed and we can get this thing on the road. :)
-
AJWars: A New Era...
Thats the link Andy, I knew it was farr, but couldnt remember the proboards number.
I shall enter Quocunque Jeceris Stabit, as its nice and simple.
Stats:
Quocunque Jeceris Stabit
Team - The Unforgotten Sons of Eden.
Shape: Simple wedge, with side bumps and a curved rear.
Colour: Blue
Weapon: A Chaos 2 style flipper with rams etc, I don€™t want to go into detail here, because it will make the stats long.
Armour: 5mm aluminium, with little titanium protection strips around the sides and a titanium strip, simpler to Firestorm 5 at the front.
Speed: Top speed is 25 mph, but I like it best at around 14 mph.
Weight: 96 kg
Ground Clearance: Close to zero at front, sides and rear the ground clearance is 2cm for better turning.
Motors: 2 Bosch 750€™s at 24 volts.
Wheels: 2 wheels, designed to give grip on most arena surfaces.
Srimech: Flipper, at a lower pressure.
Strengths: Flipper will keep going whatever you throw at it
Weaknesses: A bit out-of-date with today€™s standards (that was in 2005
----------
Those do Andy?
-
AJWars: A New Era...
Yep - a translational spinner.
-
AJWars: A New Era...
Oh well anyways AJ whats happening with FRW.
-
AJWars: A New Era...
Regarding FRW, until a couple of days ago I forgot I was back in charge of it. Maybe Ill do another try at it in the future. :) But for now, Im sticking with this format of battling.
1) Aaron - Reserved
2) Martijn - Liar
3) Willow - Back 2 Basics
4) Kody - Dysfunction 2.0
5) Alex - Trojan
6) Chris - Die-Ceratops Re-Invertus
7) Steve - The Botles Reunited
8) Dave - Quocunque Jeceris Stabit
Draw has been done, we are just waiting on Aarons entry. Battles should hopefully start tomorrow...
-
AJWars: A New Era...
Just need a few more days to work out the parts and finish the render :P Also need a name for it....
-
AJWars: A New Era...
Call it.... errr.... Aaronbot..... or, errmmm.... Mad Explosion! or..... Fission or...... some kind of Australian themed name....
I suck at naming other peoples robots (and arguably my own) but as I dont even know what its like I cant really go with a theme.
-
AJWars: A New Era...
Got the parts nutted out, just need to get the renders done to get some rough figure of weights in each area.
Hope to have a render done tomorrow
-
AJWars: A New Era...
Err... Names...
*Looks around room*
Window Radioclock?
TV Door Laptop? TVDL sounds catchy...
-
AJWars: A New Era...
The Tim Tribute Robot? :proud:
-
AJWars: A New Era...
Timey Wimey Detector ( so I stole it off Dr. Who) or maybe Spime ( Spin mixed with Mime because robots dont talk) or maybe Innocence ( because lets face it it isnt)
-
AJWars: A New Era...
Or maybe My Lawyer Made Me Change The Name Of This Robot So I Wouldnt Get Sued.
-
AJWars: A New Era...
Of all the scrapyards in all the world...
-
AJWars: A New Era...
Fission grew on me....
Brief stats, full iterated stats later
Name: Fission
Drive: S28-400 Magmotors
Batteries: 26.4v packs of A123 Lithium Nano Phosphates.
Weapon: Vertical Spinner or Flipper, Perm 080 powered.
Armour/Chassis: Titanium and hardened/spring steel.
Will work on the render tonight so I can finalise the weights and stuff.
-
AJWars: A New Era...
Back Flipped...
I present my first serious bot in a long time....
Mass Confuzzlement!
http://www.crystalnode.net/images/Mass%20Confuzzlement.pnghttp://www.crystalnode.net/images/Ma...fuzzlement.png
Armour: 3mm 4140 Chromemoly Steel
Drive: S28-150 Magmotors @ 26.4v
Batteries: 8 x Lithium Nano Phosphate (LINP) for 26.4v
Weapon: Wheel Cheeze Grater of Iminient Doom... IE: A 5mm thick piece of Chromemoly plate with 40mm holes cut in it and the edges sharpened. Wedge under, as they try to drive off, they tear there own treads up!
Weight: 25kg x Four...
Weve all seen the Botles play live, now get ready for some Mass Confuzzlement!
-
AJWars: A New Era...
And with all entries in, its time for the draw:
ff6000>Mass Confuzzlement vs. Dysfunction 2.0
Liar vs. Trojan
Quocunque Jeceris Stabit vs. Die-Ceratops Re-Invertus
Back 2 Basics vs. The Botles Reunited
However, battles may not come in this order€¦ Now for a few things I need:
Aaron: An indication of speed and a ground clearance (if possible) would be handy - otherwise, very interesting concept!
Kody: A picture of Dysfunction 2.0 would be useful, it doesn€™t have to be a render, a simple Paint job will do for me.
I don€™t think I have missed anything else, so with that - good luck everyone!
-
AJWars: A New Era...
Ill try and get it up for you sometime today.
Anyway tactics!
Mass Confuzzlement vs. Dysfunction 2.0
This shouldnt be too hard. :proud: Lets see how those graters of imminent doom stand up to my dual steel drums. Flip em around, smash em around, and attempt to get at least one of them OOTA. :proud:
As for predictions...
Liar vs. Trojan
Trojan looks evil...but even so, I think Liar can outmaneouver him get him a place on the cam track.
Quocunque Jeceris Stabit vs. Die-Ceratops Re-Invertus
Die-Ceratops FTW.
Back 2 Basics vs. The Botles Reunited
Haha, the clusterbot I didnt want to go up against. :proud: The Botles to smash up B2B and throw him around before an eventual pitting.
