Roaming Robots 2005 Winter Tour
Roboteers,
With the 5 venues booked for this years long awaited 05 Winter Tour, and the planned late August launch fast approaching.
We are putting the final pieces of what has yet again become a large Jig Saw together.
We are working hard on the Competition / Event Structures, Formats, Judging rules & Prize money.
This will again be the biggest Robotic Competition for 2005, with thousands of fans attending last year, we hope that this years tour will keep the spark alive once again, and be a steeping stone to a bigger championship next year.
However, as we are still piecing the final details together, we have decided as we normally do, to get some roboteers input before we set things in stone. What worked well, could have been better etc... to ensure that this years competition exceeds all expectations.
Either post here, or email us at: events@roamingrobots.co.uk with your comments or suggestions.
Thanks
John

What about getting some middleweights along? Ill build a new Blazer, and at the end of the day i only need one other to fight. Other roboteers might be more interested im making a middle if they see them fighting at events, but at the moment its a case of why bother when theres nobody else to fight (the same reason why ive not touched Blazer since last Wicksteed - apart from borrowing stuff out of it!).
I know weve tried to get middles at events before but usually its just been a case of a couple might turn up, but if could RR organise a competition as with the heavys and feathers and offered some sort of prize we might get more than one middle, in the same place, at the same time!
They still have alot to offer, especially for feather builders who want to go bigger but are put off by the current level of robots. Seeing as there arent really any middles on the circuit we have a level playing field to start with.
Just a thought.

Jonno,
What we need is a way of keeping the paying audience buying tickets with memories of Robot Wars fading.
I suggest that a counterfoil from each ticket be placed in a hat and drawn to give 4 lucky people the chance to drive and fight the robot of their choice - with the owners permission of course. There would be 2 fights - one with heavies and one with feathers. The fights would be organised to be mid-way in the session.
These fights would be a great way to pull in the crowds, but would not be very exciting themselves, as the drivers would lack any driving experience and skill.
I am sure that others could refine this basic idea to build audience numbers.

Youre on, Alan. There seems to be several other middles around, too. My Adams project is to build a simple lightweight so that at the very least he can be some sort of opposition to any other lightweights.

if there is a middleweight comp i will build one for it or just take out the full pressure stuff :P to make a mag powered rambot

Can middles run spinners?

julian typhoon is long retired with the internals sold on.
If you want, i could take a picture to show you its current state.

Roaming Robots 2005 Winter Tour
If the arena can take heavyweight spinners and assuming that the middles are less destructive, what is the problem with that?
-
Roaming Robots 2005 Winter Tour
o and i meant to say, Jonno, if you are ever planning anything up in this neck of the woods again although i dont think you are too keen after last time, then give me a shout.
I would be happy to do a bit of leg work and advertise the event throughout edinburgh (I didnt see anything last time)

Julian - the inner arena can take the heavy weight spinners, but the outer polycarb screens (6mm) and the roof at current is not able to contain a heavy weight spinner safely.
At the moment this year we can only have spinners in the Ant Weight and Feather Weight class.

So middles are a problem. I think that you will have to say no to them as potentially they could hit as hard as a heavy (Typhoon and 259 did)
-
Roaming Robots 2005 Winter Tour
Julian we have said no to them. Like said above ONLY ant weights and feather weight spinners are allowed. There are even feather weight spinners out there which have more HP and energy stored in their discs than some older Heavy Weight discs.

Roaming Robots 2005 Winter Tour
hi chris, enjoying your hols?
Im Looking forward to the winter tour.
Given that so many cable/satellite tv channels are still repeating all the RW stuff cant roaming robots persuade one of these channels to film the winter tour? its the only way to get the sport back in the mind of the public on a big scale. the fans are still out there but as time goes on...

Roaming Robots 2005 Winter Tour
I think bringing the winter Tour to television is a great idea because there is still a huge folowing for robotic combat.
This would make Roaming Robots even bigger!
(B.T.W) Yes i am enjoying the holidays!
-
Roaming Robots 2005 Winter Tour
BBC might be interested in doing it themselves (without Mentorn)
-
Roaming Robots 2005 Winter Tour
I agree Julian. Someone (An FRA Officer?) needs to be canvasing all the TV people all of the time to try and get coverage.
-
Roaming Robots 2005 Winter Tour
Depends where all the venues are but it should be easy to get local BBC news programmes to do a two minute piece.
Very nice animation Mr Stu! ooooo Im actually excited! :proud:
-
Roaming Robots 2005 Winter Tour
i might enter a new bot for the first time where are the venues and when are the dates
-
Roaming Robots 2005 Winter Tour
Rob, what we need is from someone representing robots (FRA and Roaming Robots) to contact the BBC to see if they would like to televise robot combat (without the baggage that would come with Mentorn). All they would need to do would be to provide cameras and presenters and the rest is done for them.

Please dont take this personally, but I think a reality check is needed here guys, life just isnt that simple and its statements like that, that make it clear to TV people just how clueless we can be at times.
Suffice to say people are talking to the BBC at the highest levels and conduits for communication exist but and at the moment there is no interest in ressurecting the format.

Roaming Robots 2005 Winter Tour
They wouldnt have to organise the event or set up the competition.
-
Roaming Robots 2005 Winter Tour
Ed I think that Julian was deliberately simplifying the problem to high light the fact that they wouldnt have to organise the event.
You could as easily say that an arena would just have to be set up and robots thrown in to battle.
-
Roaming Robots 2005 Winter Tour
I think what ed is saying is:
If its that easy do you not think they would do it?
There are things like lighting, sound, wages, crews, training, canteens for crew etc the list goes on. Dont be fooled although somethings look simple they arnt always.
-
Roaming Robots 2005 Winter Tour
There would be a lot less for the BBC to do than Mentorn had.
-
Roaming Robots 2005 Winter Tour
Julian there are contacts and legal things and copyright with robot wars or robot combat and the BBC. BBC have no interest mate. Dont worry, im sure Roaming Robots and XFM and so on are trying their hardest to get this back on the screens. Its just a slow road at the moment. We have to build our selves up first.
Anyway back on topic, only 1 more day left until the Winter Tour Details are launched - and make sure you all sign up before the 12th September.

Roaming Robots 2005 Winter Tour
I dont think the BBC will ever do it again, even though the woman that pulled the plug on it has now left, but the satellite channels shell out £8000 per episode to Mentorn, just for repeats!!! I can hardly believe that there isnt a proper television production company out there that couldnt make a programme and sell it to them.
-
Roaming Robots 2005 Winter Tour
It still comes down to cost. For a broadcaster its certainly cheaper showing a rerun than commissioning a new series let alone making one.

Will TerrorHurtz be the first robot to retain a crown since Chaos 2 did in series 4 and 5?
Last time I checked it was series 3 & 4 :)
